Ashita no joe is the best sports manga I have read. Casuals rave about Hajime no ippo when that trash been written by a racist troll who trolled his own fanbase with dragged and snailish chapters. How Morikawa used it as a mouthpiece to express his racial distaste towards African american fighters and bias towards mexican. Joe experienced the trauma of having to kill the person he can call a friend in rikiishi. Ippo didn't. Ippo never suffered the pain of weight management. He never sought out the strongest. Joe did. Even if his body is telling him that something is wrong. Joe had more significant character development from the time he went out of juvie up to his tragic fight against rikiishi compared to ippo's more than 30 year run.
