While doing a Parallel Park with Beth, this tractor driver approached from behind and tried to help out. In this video I highlight why it is important to actually see what the vehicles are doing rather than just locking onto them.

I find that tractor drivers in general are some of the most helpful drivers on the road. They are used to driving large and slow moving vehicles. On rural roads, when they see a queue of traffic building up behind them will pull over in a safe area and allow them to pass before continuing their journey. It's pointless attempting a risky overtake, simply wait behind and let them pull over for you, which they invariably will do, if at all possible.

This was my experience up until this year. This summer in my area has been awful for tractor drivers - they don't let people past (even with huge buildups), they're arrogant, angry and exceedingly unpleasant towards other road users that inconvenience them. It has been quite a shock as there generally weren't any problems like this before - perhaps there is increased stress in the workplace, or just a new batch of workers but regardless their behaviour is unacceptable. I am pleased to see this isn't a nationwide problem.

From my point of view as a cyclist I do not like agricultural drivers as they seem not to know what constitutes a close pass. I'm no shrinking violet but they seem to have no appreciation of how threatening their vehicles are.

@@michaelgurd7477 You try driving a tractor and load on a narrow country road where fast, angry car drivers are bullying all the time. I was a cyclist until my stroke so I amt unaware of the problems involved in traffic, but my most frequently met problem was impatient car drivers who pulled halfway across the road on a right turn even though they could see a cyclist approaching, Many times I had to slam the brakes on, physically prevent myself from flying over the car. Revenge was sweet as cycle shoes have rigid soles and make nice repeated dents in car doors.

Honestly. Being a good teacher is more than just having knowledge on the subject. It's being able to explain it to someone who doesn't have that knowledge or experience and helping them build up the confidence to do things on their own. You're a great driving instructor Ash.

It's good to see another driver being kind to a learner. You don't see that everyday. Most drivers take advantage of learner drivers and that is what I face when I drive as a learner. Well done tractor driver we want more drivers like you

They seem to stop soo close that I need to make sure there is no mistake. Imagine if I stalled the car and rolled back. Then I will be to blame because I'm a learner

People are usually respectful to learners in my country atleast People usually only overtake learners which isnt a problem if its not dangerous. I dont even have a licence yet and i try to get past a learner car if possible aswell Also i would never get too close to a learner, they will stall at one point. Ive got into an accident because someone tried to get past me due to me having danger triangles out but they underestimated me and didnt check mirrors well after smashing the gas, as did i so we were next to each other. Well i couldve avoided it and saw the accident coming a mile away but the car needed free repairs.

@@aok9153 it very much varies by region. Where I learned we had the opposite problem, the dangerous "over politeness" of unnecessarily giving way to people/letting people out. When I was a learner who wasn't able to intuitively suss out situations, etiquette and observations so well yet, I found this behaviour confusing and frustrating.

Big respect for the tractor driver! Seeing you guys then helping you out and having the patience to help out a learner. I live on a road that car schools use all the time for parking and new pupils. It’s a big wide long straight road so ideal for learning. I often wait for schools to park or do whatever manoeuvre they need, but there’s always that one impatient person that squeezes by!!

Tractor drivers deal with hundreds of dangerously impatient drivers, so they tend to be quite courteous. They will still get people doing an overtake when they themselves have indicated that they will be turning right. As if the numerous flashing lights aren't a clue that you ought to give space and time to them.

It is a scary and imposing sight to see approaching from behind. It was a bit of a "curve ball" occurrence, Keep it up! The thing we should all take from this video is that everyone on the road deserves respect. Perhaps that little moment of respect from the tractor will prompt the student in the future to respect the tractors. Whilst they’re slow and cumbersome, they’re just at work to put food on your table. They can be tired, stressed, on a tight schedule and at this time of year their working day can be some people’s working week. Unsung heroes! (Driving instructors too, you do a great job)

The dual carriageway nature of this road probably gives an impression that the road should be fast, even though it is a residential zone, made clear by the housing. That's not a good excuse for impatient driving, but it does provide some sort of explanation. It's still quite rightly a residential zone, providing for traffic to park up.

He's probably not opening a gate here, so there must be an obstruction or incident. He's not just parked to visit his mum. But the mentality of the black car to just go around, is hard to fathom.

Well-handled, Ashley. We tractor drivers know that the large, slow and unwieldy machines we operate cannot get to our destination fast, so may be that is why at least some of us are prepared to drive steadily, patiently, and with some consideration for other road users, because it will make little difference to our journey times but will improve our reputation at little cost to ourselves. In this clip the tractor driver used his high seating position to understand the situation developing in front of him from a long way back, and simply did the right thing. The tractor and trailer in this clip appear also to be correctly equipped and lit for the road - when I worked for various farmers in the 80's a couple of them would tell me to drive a dangerous jalopy somewhere along the public roads with the tacit understanding that I would be sacked if I refused, so I obeyed my bosses knowing that I would be held responsible if stopped by the police. (I farm on my own account now and so can choose what I drive). I still see illegal machinery operating occasionally, but I suspect things are not as bad as they used to be, which is just as well because policing in my part of rural Somerset away from the trunk routes is almost non-existent. There is no excuse for a tractor driver to give anyone grief, but bear in mind that they may be working for someone else in a pressured poorly-regulated environment which is out of their control. The 'get home-itis' attitude of the driver of the black Peugot was poor, to say the least - I hope he (it's probably a 'he') gets to see this clip, and appreciates that he can probably be identified from his partly-discernible registration plate. P.S. Seeing some of the other comments, it probably helps my tractor driving that I'm also sometimes a pedestrian and cyclist and so see the road environment from different perspectives.

By UK law, all tractors & JCBs are governed to a maximum speed of 24 MPH. Also, all road legal dumper trucks are governed to a maximum speed of 18 MPH.

You would have to be pretty impatient to even consider going onto the grass to overtake a stationary tractor like that. If a vehicle stops in the middle of the road like that, you have to think there must be a reason for it.

Oh how times changed.. When I was learning my instructor would loose his shit every 10 second. Never in my life did I meet anyone even coming close to his level of anger, amount of swearing.. I dragged every time getting in that bloody car. I was young and thought this was normal because my driving skills were sht. Only years later I realised this guy was not fit to work with people... Wish I had someone like here ;)

my wife once ran into an elderly woman who apparently just froze up while attempting a parallel park. (figuratively speaking on the ran into part) after wasting minutes waiting for and even asking if there was a problem and then telling her to either park or move on, she finally called for police to come and get her moving again.

I always panic when I'm learning. But my instructor says that after 9 lessons I'm almost ready for a test, it's just the case of getting my experience up and practicing all of the maneuvers in my own time.

Yeah, experience is key. Make everything feel automatic to you. I did about 1000miles in my own car to practice and had around 40hours of lessons, I passed with 1 minor and I felt super comfortable on the roads by myself

As a fellow tractor driver, we tend to get a lot of stereotypical hate that we are careless dirty animals who keep drivers behind, we are drivers of slow large vehicles, we take a lot of care on the road, and we can protect learner drivers, just like in this video.

Around where I live, the farm contractors hire young people who maybe haven't driven tractors that much or at all, and I find they tend to not look or anything when pulling out in the middle of the road, or let anyone past, if a more experienced person is driving then they're nice enough but a young one would just have pushed on through in the situation in the video at least around here anyway.

Today i was driving my truck and trailer. I approached a T junction. I already saw a truck around the corner which indicated it was coming into my direction. And the corners of this particular T junction are tight, so i made sure to stop way before the junction itself. Behind me was a car. Behind the truck that wanted to come my way was another truck. Now, guess what the 4 wheeler tin-can driver does? Exactly. He wants to overtake me because i stopped to let the other 2 trucks take the corner. All of this would not have been a problem if it was not for another 4 wheel tin can idiot to do the exact same thing. And guess what? The second 4 wheel tin can driver was someone who obviously had gotten his license by collecting stamps or perhaps stickers to paste on some bonuscard for some shop. I dunno. He obviously was unable to drive. It took him 5 minutes to create enough space for the other 4 wheel tin can driver to park his sorry BEHIND in. Ashley Neal, can you perhaps give a tip to me as a professional truck driver what to do in such situations? I try to block them as much as i can, but in the example i gave i can not block them because that would mean i block the other trucks who are about to turn around the corner. If you have any tips..... the Hazard lights dont work because it encourages them to actually pass you, especially when you are in a truck. Even if you already have made a manoeuvre to back into a dock, angling your trailer. They still try to sneak past. I sometimes really struggle to keep the brake pedal pressed down. I sometimes really want to just put my foot on the gas pedal to just show them how stupid they really are. But, as a professional driver i do not let them win. I just keep blocking the street, and if they dont figure it out, i turn off the ignition, lock it all up, and go for a walk. And eventually they will figure it out.

I was out today doing my Cat C lessons and was stuck behind a tractor for 7 miles, they have a job to do so no complaints from me on that, except.... the whole time he was on his phone, and he wasn't discreet either and he was also weaving a lot as he kept letting go of the wheel to get a drink while still on the phone. It just shows in all walks of life there are good guys like in this vid and trash that abuse it like the guy in front of me today.

I wondered what was going on then. I thought what are you doing in the middle of the road. Then realised it was a learner doing a maneuver. We live in a town. We only get annoyed because their learning route is a busy road with fast moving traffic and they're being told to do all sorts of stuff on a road that is a main artery through the town and the instructor's are dangerous. They need to change their route the opposite direction, and these roads would better benefit and test the drivers skills more at the same time. Perhaps I should write them a letter because they cause all sorts of accidents just because their site was built in a field to the side of the road. No issues with the learners. Just the dangerous route the test centre and agency decide to take.

Anybody noticed that if driving down narrow country roads and see tractor coming other way, they never slow down, just barrel through even if towing a trailer? Either they are bad drivers or have bad brakes?

If it's really tight, I find it best to slow down, pull over as far as you can then stop. The tractor is then the only moving vehicle making the decision to proceed if there is a scrape. I've driven a few tractors & it's quite easy to judge the width because you can clearly see both your front tyres.

It was nice to see the tractor driver being protective of the learner rather than aggressive. However, I can see why the SUV got annoyed and they may have had a point. 1. The tractor can NOT get past the learner 2. The cars CAN get past the tractor 3. The learner is to the left of the centre line, so the second lane is clear. If all those are true it seems like traffic could have flowed past the tractor without impacting the learner? 🤔

And then you end up with a bunch of drivers who aren't able to parallel park when there are other cars around - a skill which is invaluable for most people who will end up having to do a parallel park on a busy road at some point in their life, either outside where they live, or when visiting another city. Might as well hold people up for a minute or two (in this video, it was 1 minute from tractor blocking lane 2 to completion of the manoeuver) while you learn with an instructor, than hold people up for 5+ minutes as you go back and forth on your own because you've never had to perform the manoeuver under pressure before
