I love the original members of ASIA. It was really a super band. In 21st century, they got together and began to perform the tunes of their golden ages again. They got old but were sophisticatedly cooler than before. I was attached by their astonishing skills of playing instruments. ASIA is still one of the very best bands in the history of rock music.

This is no cut on Mandy Meyer, but my observation of the reason he never got the credit he deserved is that he was a brilliant guitar player who did not crave the limelight as his contemporaries, Yngwie Malmsteen and Eddie Van Halen. Additionally, production tended to drown out any distinct stylistic flavor, so Meyer sounded like every other guitar player who was on record in the mid 1980s.

My favorite among all the line-ups of Asia. When Steve Howe left the second time around (2012) I wished for a limited tour of ASTRA with Meyer on guitar, I don't think they ever played a live gig together. You're missed John! Quick trivia note: Aza, the heroine on this video didn't die at the end. They were planning on bringing her back on all the videos they had planned for ASTRA (I think "Too Late" was next) but since Geffen pulled the plug on the album she never had a chance to come back to life.

ASIA is awesome. Truly underrated. Hall of Fame Caibre. This song launched with so much fanfare. It hit #7 on mainstream rock charts--but was too "serious" for 1985, which had a heavy dose of very light POP music leading the way. Still enjoy all of the first 3 ASIA Albums as much as any. Check of later Asia with John Wetton Returning in 2006-2014. We miss classic rock singer John Wetton--A real gem.

@@martindebrois1472 what did he do that was so bad for the band to not only kick him to the curb after Alpha, but then not even promote Astra when he returned?
@martindebrois1472
@martindebrois1472 2 жыл бұрын
@@heythereitsRBK2 He didn't. He drank - To extreme, on some off-days (He wasn't wasted, at concerts) ... But it was really Steve Howe didn't like him, and Steve Howe RULED - behind the scenes. Brian Lane was the manager of Asia, who he managed Yes, the previous four years (before '81) ... And Brian, out of just familiarity, with Howe, perceived [mistakenly] Steve Howe was the main talent in the band - *Not* Wetton. Also it was decided, foolishly, Wetton and Downes would write all the songs for Alpha - With no Steve Howe ideas mixed in. This was a bad idea soundwise, and for the human aspect. - Everybody knew this was happening, including John Kalodner himself - Who could have stopped it, but didn't. Asia with Greg Lake failed, spectacularly (after airing a clip on MTV, from the concert in Japan of Greg Lake literally *unable to sing* "only time will tell") ➡️ And as the record label saw the band sinking, they realized the commercial value of John Wetton's voice, and called him to come back. So he came back ... But about right after he was back, he told them 'You know what "F__k You" ~ You know my voice rules, now, you need to get Steve Howe the F out of here .. If I'm going to do this third album.' They did. ... But they hated him for it. And Brian Lane, and other record label people STILL liked Steve Howe better than they liked John Wetton - And torpedoed the album. We're talking several things are in place for the first album, and even Alpha - that they didn't put in place for Astra. (For one they they didn't send them on the road, playing concerts - Which would have, obviously, made more excitement for the album. People could have heard Mandy Meyer, Steve Howe's replacement play guitar, live ... Etc.) Now Carl Palmer said, in an interview, 4 years ago Wetton was too messed up drinking, still to do it. .. But I doubt it. - When tour dates came he would have gotten his act together - Enough at least to be sober and *great* , on stage. They couldn't have played arenas, in late 1985, anymore ~ But could have played large theaters, 2000-4000 seats .... and certainly outdoor places in the spring ... And built their brand back. The record company hated John Wetton too much to let that happen. See John Wetton's *very EXISTENCE* proved Brian Lane wrong - That he could move the chess pieces around, kick John out, because Steve Howe was jealous of him - bring in an altogether different guy at lead vocals (the only similarity to anything is that Greg also played with Carl Palmer), and it would work great! Because it was hiiiissss band. ➡️ Well that whole idea got egg on its face *(really Brian Lane's face)* , real bad. And Wetton had to pay. Did anybody ever notice in the end of the video they kill the main character (album cover lady), at the end of the song? ? I did. Wetton should have noticed, too.
@je862
@je862 Жыл бұрын
@@martindebrois1472 I was going to ask about the video character dying at the end…. I read somewhere that they were going to make a sequel to the video where she didn’t die but came back for revenge or something of the sort. Do you know about that or was it just a rumor?
@martindebrois1472
@martindebrois1472 Жыл бұрын
@@je862My take is they had her killed, and rather cavalierly , because they weren't going to make any more videos. I mean think about it: This cool female cyborg character ... Great song, and a very beautiful lady in the music video doesn't hurt, either. RIP John Wetton.

@@philliplandry4139Nope, it isn't. She has a fuller face ... This girl has a slim face. Anyway smokin' hot 🔥 lady, in this video! You had to have it, if you were some 80's rock guys (second 1/2).

The band who made it wasn't out on tour, at the time - Which was because of the management. Singles *chart* higher when the artist is already OUT, playing live.

I love Carl Palmer, the drummer. He's one of the three greatest drummers ever in rock n roll, and the only one still living. The other two are John Bonham of Led Zeppelin and Kieth Moon of The Who.

I used to listen to that UK album with "In The Dead Of Night" on it. It was with Wetton on vocals/bass, Bill Bruford on drums and Allan Holdsworth on guitar. Good album.

Excellent album. Eddie Jobson on keys/violin was also in the group. After Bruford and Holdsworth left they made another album called "Danger Money" with Terry Bozzio on drums. It's a little poppier but still a decent record. The Wetton/Jobson/Bozzio line-up has reformed recently on occasion and has played a few shows.

AngelFalls Music Very cool man. I had seen that "Danger Money" album but have never heard it. I had forgot that Bruford played with Genesis on tour I believe around '77. He is a monster. I have been playing Wind & Wuthering and Trick Of The Tail a lot lately. Reminds me of good childhood memories. Phil had some excellent chops and Banks, Rutherford and Hackett were and are brilliant. Of course you have to throw some "Going For The One" and "The Yes Album" on to give equal ear time to the giants! We can't help but be musical snobs when this material appears in our playlists. Take care brother!

I bought this tape cassette when it first came out along with their first two albums. All three are highly underrated and I don't understand why this and their other music videos didn't get more airplay on MTV back then.

another song that i can suggest along this vein is "Touch and Go" by Emerson, Lake and Powell. It has the same energy, and came out in the mid-80s. All three members of that band have passed, sadly enough. The song is powerful!
