Perhaps, these proven great and distinguished scholars of episodes, E1, E2 and E3, plus the equally great n distinguished programme coordinator should visit Xinjiang, China to witness for themselves the situation there, and then gather together for one respected dialogue session. Imagine how invigorating n interesting that session will be!! With their excellent reputation, integrity, and wisdom they are more than capable to undertake this mission for ASEAN or the people of SEA !! I earnestly appeal to all these greats to take up this meaningful task . The Truth has to prevail ! I pray for their health !

I have alot of respect for Prof Kishore and also Prof Farish Noor. I do agree Asian are more tolerant of other culture in general. I do understand that no country history is squeaky clean? But truth matters. There were two instances of ethnic Indonesia Chinese being massacred during the civil unrest preceding the fall of Pres Suharto and Pres Sukarno? I have seen many pictures of ethnic Chinese women being raped, mutilated and killed too. in the former case? Many years ago I had an Indonesian Chinese friend who migrated Australia and he also told me his family had a closed shaved and managed to escape before the rampaging mob raided and burned down his house.

Suharto has one mistake. He keeps exploiting and splitting the people into tribes, religion, races and ethnic groups (SARA), and it creates tension within the people inside. That's why in 1998 it booms into a violence against Chinese in Indonesia

Why did your friend "escape" to Australia ? Didn't you say that "Asian are more tolerant of other culture in general" ? Why didn't your friend migrate to an Asian country ?

@@angusmckenzie9622 You have a good point there...I said generally. The reason is because most Asia countries tend to be more multi-racial. Culturally Asians are also more docile whereas people in the West are more individualistic. But over the years things have change as today Australia is becoming more and more multi-racial. Western laws are also more transparent and mindful of minority rights. But there is a distinction between the country and people with regards to tolerance and this is what I meant.

I am very glad to hear that you are a Hindu Sindhi ,l can proudly call myself a Sindhi Indian as well . l am a great admirer of your thoughts because you and l share the same tolerant culture and a poet who shared same thoughts 300 years ago saying, "Dost mitha dildar alam sabh abad kareen"Praying for the whole world . l am worried why this nuclear world do not have much scholars like you to propagate for peace!?

Saw many comments about Xinjiang but I heard nothing in this interview where Prof Farish Noor ever mention the Xinjiang problem. Do let me know if I miss something. Nonetheless, I find his comments about Southeast Asia fascinating and hope peace and prosperity continues in ASEAN and elsewhere in the world!

i agree, farish noor was actually very fair in his assessment, 33:40 opening his sentence about xinjiang by saying "in many reports..." and he only touched that subject for about 15 seconds after being asked to comment on india and china. i guess those xinjiang comments are from sensitive CCP watchers scanning for china criticism on media, completely ignoring the wideranging and depth of the discussion in this video.

Prof Farish Noor’s seemingly offhand comments regarding Xinjiang was unthought through & o consistent with academic rigour. Also, overall too rosy tinted a view of SEA racial history. That said, I think all talks & conversations that feature Kishore Mahbubani are worth listening to

Dear Mr. Mahbubani, thank you, as usual, for the very informative podcast. I do have 2 questions: (1) When is Mr. Farish Noor going to Xinjiang to check whether the Kool-Aid he's been drinking was laced with western MSM or not? Given that he's such an enlightened Southeast Asian, I will take his report as the final word on what is going on over there; (2) Can Mr. Noor then please give a comparison from an ASEAN perspective between the treatment of the Muslims in Rohingya by Aung San Suu Kyi and her military buddies, who, I'm happy to say, have since turned on her, with the treatment of the Uyghur and other minority Muslims in Xinjiang once he's seen it with his own eyes. Let's do like those Indonesian architecture students in Thailand and go look at the structures, and not just read about them at the British Museum.

Just wonder what is the final analysis of Prof Farish about China treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Is there a genocide or not?. He stops short after commenting on it.

well, there is none. i have been there and u can too with a simple tourist visa (different to indias kashmir). when i was there i understood that chinese security there is strict and for sure there have been many uighurs treated unfairly, but i could see the chinese really try to develop the province and giving opportunities to the minorities. xinjiang borders afghanistan. think how your country would look like if it bordered afghanistan. and i think the people in xinjiang (both uighurs and han etc) have a right of not being terrorized by bombs and terrorists. u have to know one thing: else then US thinktanks and western NGOs "studies" there is not one hard evidence for genocide or even forced assimilation

Agreed that Indonesia has much more inclusive n enjoyed its past complex historical legacy more openly compared to Other Asean countries.. such as Malaysia.. nevertheless, the religious supremacy tendency is rather strong mainly due to political patronage...mainly because socio economic imbalances being exploited by politicians..so far Thailand is the best role model as inclusive n tolerant mix culture of Asean mainly underpinned by a majority Buddhist populace.. ,

Between China, Japan and Korea the most relevant reality is the winner takes all competition in the technology, manufacturing and business arenas. Whatever historical baggage pale in the face of this capitalist quest to rise to the top of the pecking order. The ASEAN countries can coexist much more peacefully because they are involved in this last man standing conquest.

I sometimes think I was born in the wrong time and place. Here in America...the Covid situation is still rampant and I fear a rise in segregation is on its way in some parts of the country. I too would like to see a more prosperous Southeast Asia. But it will take time. China is probably gonna continue to be aggressive in my opinion.

India has never aligned to Russia but for political marriage of convenience manifested by emotional insecurity n paranoia... now being key member of QUAD manifested by US unipolar geopolitical alliance ... that failed to live up to its past glorious cultural heritage that had influence much of Asia including China.. again China has no choice to deal with Japan with apprehension n distrust because Japan has never been shown any remorse for their past aggression.....Dr Noor interpretation of China attitude towards Japan can not be compared to India towards Pakistan..... The underpinning reality is that Japan had never apologise for its past aggression n its leaders has continuously pay homage n respect to Temple that honoured the War Murderers as one .......in comparison, Germany built a museum to record the Jews Genocide, while Japan refused to rectify its history books to respect historical facts... So in order for this podcast to drive the Asean Spirits for peace n harmony as a role model in world geopolitics...both the moderator n the invited guest must speak more boldly the weaknesses of Asian,/Asean cultural heritage instead of. being polite, reserve, apologetic n being politically correct ! So far Prof. Wang Kungwu has the best narrative to dive more in-depth Asean geopolitics..using past reference to the historical heritage of regional tributary n dominating geopolitics.. meantime using historical facts to moderate the issue of border conflicts such as China/India , India/Pakistan, China/Vietnam, China/ Japan ( Diaoyu Island), China/Russia, South China Sea.. THESE NARRATIVES N DIALOGUE PLATFORMS N ENGAGEMENT SHOULD DRIVE OTHER SPIN OFF DIALOGUES TO ENGSGE A GREATER CIRCLE OF CONCERN N INFLUENCE TO DEVELOP A FORMIDABLE VALUE CHAIN/CIRCLES FOR PROGRESSIVE GEOPOLITICAL ENGAGEMENT DRIVEN BY THE SUCCESS OF ASEAN AS ALTERNATIVE VALUE ADDING BENCHMARKS FOR GLOBAL MULTI LATERALISM AS DEMINSTRSTED BY THE DIVERSITY OF ASEAN N ITS INCREASING PROMINSNCE IN SOCIO ECONOMIC PRAGMATISM .. IN RETURN THESE WILL BE CATALYST TO ENHANCE THE ASEAN INTRUNSIC ECO SYSTEMS!
