There is no word for 'tan' in chinese so it is replaced by 'black' _lost in translation...._ EDIT: ok just to clear things up, the word for tan is a compound word 晒黑 which is sun-black. To say that ur tan you say 我很黑, I'm very black. And white skin is a beauty standard in East Asia because yeaaars ago richer people could stay at home and didn't have a tan and it's become a cultural thing.

Likewise, there's no word in Chinese for "pale skin", so it's replaced by "white skjn". So next time you hear a Chinese say they want to be white, doesn't mean they want to be racially white!

It a reflection of the thinking in terms of extremes when it come to “beautiful “ and “ugly.” When there are so many other subtleties in communication and relationships in China, and new words are created daily to keep up with technology jargon you’d think the society would do the same when it came to skin tones.

I think a lot of this actually comes from not being used to seeing Asian people. I live in a predominantly white country, and I have to admit that the first time I traveled to Japan I actually had some difficulties recognizing my host sister in a crowd. As I got used to seeing Asian traits, I learned to differentiate people from each other. This has nothing to do with me being racist (at least I hope not), but more to do with the fact that I'm not used to see Asian traits. My parents have the same issue with Black people, although I, through American media, have gotten used to seeing African features. So yeah, TLDR: It's about being used to see certain types of faces and thereafter learning to differentiate between them.

@@karinajrgensen1738 this is why asian representation is so important in media nowadays. Before, people will always have that one token asian character in a cast full of westerners, so they are not used to the distinct features of asians. But here in my country, even whites and blacks get the "they all look the same" treatment. Not most but like the older generations do... A black man will be called "michael jordan" and a white man will be called "brad pitt" or something. Tho ofc whites/caucasians are more distinguished/recognized because they've dominated film industry for years.

@otk88403
@otk88403 6 жыл бұрын
@@StopTryingSoHard 180 cm is obviously an estimate. It's not like I went and measured every single person and averaged all their heights in my head. Way to be pedantic. Even then, an average is an average. In China, height averages are skewed because of the shorter, older citizens aged 35~40+, who didn't have the nutrition required to grow tall. China, along with other Asian countries, only became wealthy recently. This is also the reason why teens/young adults in urban, wealthy areas like Shanghai are going to be taller than their peers living in rural areas. Taking only the well-nourished youth into account, it's very likely that the average is going to be higher than 176 cm. This is also the reason why young South Koreans in their teens and 20s seem so tall despite the population's height average being nothing special relative to other countries. It wouldn't surprise me if Asian countries surpassed the US and some other European countries after a couple of decades.
@StopTryingSoHard
@StopTryingSoHard 6 жыл бұрын
Outside of NW China, I don't think I've ever seen any East Asian who was over 180 cm. In NW China you do see these random really tall people, both men and women. Are you really sure that's going to happen? Because you know there's plenty of Chinese Americans, Korean Americans and Japanese Americans and they are not suddenly 6'8". And a few of those population centers of Chinese, Japanese and Koreans have been in the US for 150+ years with no issues with eating.

Watching them participate in those challenges made me so nervous... To do that in an interview (even if they were asked if they are ok with it) in front of others sounds scary. These beauty standards feel so controlling and it's like we are surrounded by them, bringing yourself to be looked at like is not easy for everyone. I have had body image issues my whole life and while I'm not trying to lose weight, I would still feel so self consious. I don't think telling the height and weight and trying those challenges was actually very necessary for the video, but as long as they were comfortable I have nothing to say :D I'm soo happy for everyone who is confident in their own skin, I'm trying my best to appreciate myself too! And of course for everyone who has overcome eating disorders, sending love

The phrase "I am black." does not have any racial meanings hidden behind. This is a direct translation from the Chinese phrase "我很黑" (wo hen hei). "Black" by itself only means the shade black (黑, hei). And only when it is combined with "people," it refers to black people (黑人, hei ren). The girl probably wants to say "I have a dark skin tone" rather than "I am black (people)." Chinese's preference for pale skin can be dated back to ancient history. It also does not relate to the white supremacism in the US. I understand that in the States, this phrase sounds very problematic. But it is a common thing to be said as a self-criticism on appearance in China. We are constantly comparing ourselves to a so-called "better" standard and trying to find flaws in our bodies. And this is why that girl is being so "harsh" on herself even though she looks pale AF in our opinions. Our harsh standard of appearance is definitely a culture and a social problem in China. On the other hand, racial issues are not embedded in our culture and history as much compared to the States. I understand that this video is meant for western audiences. But pushing social standards on other cultures does not seem fair. However, I do believe that the awareness of racial problems needs to be improved in China since we are increasingly exposed to the international environment. Luckily, I can see some raising awareness of this topic recently. But of course, we still have a LONG way to go. I do believe that it is the channel's responsibility to be considerate about these kinds of cultural and political differences. Asian Boss should be more careful with the translation knowing the fact that you will reach a HUGH western audience. I would love to see Asian Boss thrive and eventually serve as a great model that changes misunderstanding and reveals the REAL ASIA.

The Chinese women seem to be a lot more confident and open about their looks compared to the Korean and Japanese. Although I see most Chinese girls are skinnier they seem to not follow the rules as harshly. The 'under 50kg' rule is literally causing eating disorders here and there, weight literally doesn't matter, its what you look like really.
@persephoneswinter739
@persephoneswinter739 6 жыл бұрын
do they at least consider height? 50kg for someone who is 1,55m might be considered normal or a tiny bit chubby whereas 50kg with a height of 168m is pretty skinny and underwight and over 1,70m or even 1,75m is scary thin. Let me explain it a little. For thousands of years in China, people have been pursuing “white” as beauty. Men and women are all the same and girls are even more. And at that time we thought that the dark skin was sunburned outdoors every day to do the coolie, so this idea has been passed down to this day. But our “black”(黑) and “white”(白) are degree words, not white and black. Although we also have light(亮) and dark(暗)or tan(棕or古铜) words, but we generally do not use this, because has been used to, especially when spoken.

Nobody is bashing her because as a black person I understand that in a lot of Asian countries having pale skin is a very common beauty standard does it irritate me yes because being black is beautiful and having dark skin does not make you any less than somebody who is white but at the same time I'm not offended by what she said because it is what it is...but a lot of you guys are defending her saying that there's not a word in the language to describe tan skin which I understand but that's not what she said she said in her statement "because I'm dark" and there's nothing wrong with that but then she proceeded to say "I'm black" I don't get why you guys are defending her saying that it's because of a language difference and she didn't mean to say black she meant to say tan because she clearly said I'm black in english... Now with that being said I'm in no way bashing her because she's obviously not saying that she is a black person and she's more so referring to the color itself but at the same time my girls not black but hey it's a cultural beauty standard difference thing and I get it

The horrifying thing is that many people know what attitude to adopt when getting asked about beauty standards or the eyes of others. However, it's easier to say than done, many still suffer and pursue that standard in that social environment of objectification and comparison. Hopefully, mental health support can be much more accessible than now.

it's a matter of being lost in translation, majority of the world knows what black and dark means. if its translated differently in Asia then simply state that. but we are not ignorant. we simply translate it differently. check yourself. as for the whole world thing, check yourself again. Far East Asia is far behind when it comes to social issues so while the rest of the WORLD address pressing social issues countries like China have no clue that half of their beliefs are considered discriminatory or even border line racist and misogynist. THE WORLD DID EVOLVE TOGETHER, it is they that are catching up. get your facts straights. like i said YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

Hope X um it doesn't. she lives in a society that has wanted to obtain lighter skin since ancient civilization. she was raised just like everyone else around her to believe that lighter skin is more beautiful. the reason for that being that light skin meant you were wealthy because you stayed inside and the poor/servants had tan skin from working outside in the sun all day. do not label this woman as something she's not just because she is uneducated on a subject and was raised so this is the only mindset she knows. that's extremely ignorant of you.

chenlemon what you just said: she was raised to believe that lighter skin is beautiful and she’s uneducated about seeing the beauty in all colors. Doesn’t that make you ignorant to assume she uneducated and knows nothing about equality of skin colors? I don’t know why you mentioned, white is wealthy and tan is servant, that’s a belief of the past. Just because she “lives in a society..blah blah blah” that believes in such colorist ideologies doesn’t make it okay. Doesn’t exuse it from what it is; colorism. And living in today’s society, nearly everyone is on social media, it’s 2018 there is no exuse to be “ignorant” or believe “white skin is the most beautiful” old ass idea when conversations around racism, classism, colorism and all other topics are widely discussed on the media and standards of beauty is now becoming ambiguous . No excuse. It’s ignorant of you to accept colorism. Black/tan is not ugly, it is just as beautiful. If no ones gonna call her out for being colorist, how is your “uneducated” angel gonna learn?
