Thank you for this podcast and also your great channel. I am one of those movie collectors dating back from the early 2000s. I have curated most of my collection, digitized everything (including special features) to my Plex server. I just counted my physical disks and I have 300, which is quite manageable as far as space and aesthetics are concerned. Including movies, TV shows, documentaries, I have over 2000 on my Plex server (on 3 external hard drives). I back up my media and the server a few times a year. I’m a 70 year old grandma, so there is no age limit for collecting. My favorite genre is the classics, like me. 😅

when we can stream uncompressed movies then I will understand how physical media would be dead, but until then all streaming is dependent on someone else owning the media which doesnt work for me. All the movies I love I collect so I can watch with the best format, video and audio.

Oh, man... You should explore the joys of film-based friend hangouts. I set up a movie theater in my tiny apartment and now I hang out and socialize with people like crazy -- a totally unexpected side benefit. If a movie comes up in conversation that a person happens to not have seen, I will invite that person over. We usually spend an hour or two talking and hanging out, maybe eat dinner or something like that, then we watch the movie, and then we spend another hour or two talking about the movie or just gabbing. It's great.

Streaming is a heck no for me. You don't get to own the movies and there isn't one streaming service out right now that has all the movies I want to watch in one place. I'm not paying for twenty different streaming services just to have access to 70% of the movies I want to see.
@PoGoX7
@PoGoX7 Жыл бұрын
Also, no need to reject streaming totally. I pay for 2 streaming services for the convenience. If I’m cleaning or something, I don’t need the best audio/video, so I use streaming. When I haven’t seen an older movie I don’t own, then I’ll stream it. If I enjoy the film, then I go out and buy the disc. Streaming and physical media can work very well together, no need to pit them against each other 🤙🏽

Your thoughts on buying a 4K Blu-ray instead of a regular Blu-ray (because they often are twice the price - or more, at least where I live). In my case, I only buy 4K when the movie is visually impressive or when it is the only way to get a new version (like for 2001 and The Matrix).

Regarding at 14 min, i started last May, first 4ks were Guardians of the Galaxy and Speed, i have nearly 100, and have almost finished replacing my dvd collection, Some from my past were Region 1, so all of those had to be replaced, like Crimson Tide and Good Will Hunting and more recently Enemy of the state. Kinda annoys me films from my youth are not on 4k, Body Heat, The Postman always Rings twice( Jessica Lange). Defo a fan of your videos.

As for streaming, I use it less and less. It's becoming more like broadcast cast TV, with mediocre "made for tv" shows. I like movies first, and the selections on these streaming platforms is so spread out, they really aren't worth paying for every month. I think streaming content is going to continue to go down in quality, because they have to constantly push out content, which gets really expensive.

I currently have a 7.2.4 and have been very happy with it. I originally had gone to a 8.1 before. With a amp/receiver capable. But ended up selling it and being fully happy with 7.2. Because surround sound did this weird thing for a while, where the numbers just kept claiming like picture resolution. When in fact, no film mixes were even using these higher specs. I tend to agree with you. I think the 7.2 is fine…

I look at it this way, physical media is collectable and digital streaming is not. There are always chances there could be licensing issues or some other legal issue that could take digital content off streaming services. Streaming services are always dropping and adding movies and digital versions that are streamed will never gain worth. I love the fact that unless something happens to the disc I have it in my possession and can watch it at any time.

Nothing wrong with culling a collection down to a reasonable number. I realize I will never be able to watch all of my movies going forward now, approaching 15K. I think for me, with the space not being as big of an issue, I think I have decided to keep my collection this big for perhaps historical preservation. When I pass on, the collection may be able to go to a museum or a facility who can cull the rare/obscure releases to have. And either sell the rest for charity. Or do whatever they wish. My ultimate goal is to start a charity for homeless cats and dogs with my estate proceeds once I am gone anyway… I have many other areas besides just movies where the value of my collections can bring in revenue for this charity. I have a massive video game collection as well as collectible card collection that can all be used for charity purposes. 🤷‍♂️

Hi Jeff, I like your channel, and I just found a problem with my Panasonic DP-UB820 4K UHD player, last night as I tried to watch my new Kino Lober 4K UHD 'Dolby Vision' disk of "The Great Escape", The player would not recognize that the disk was encoded with Dolby Vision. I checked all of the settings and restarted the player with no joy. I also have a new Sony X700M that is modified for ALL Region Blu-ray play, and that player did recognize the disk as a Dolby Vision and it worked fine. I have never had this issue with my other KL 4K Dolby Vision disks. Have you ever heard of this issue before? I sent a 'trouble ticket' message to Panasonic, but have not gotten a response yet. keep up your excellent work. Thanks; F.C. Howland

A 4K release of True Lies 👍 🙌 My only worry is that Arnolds stunt double in that film very obviously looks nothing like him. It's quite obvious on my 20 year old DVD. I can only imagine how visible that issue would be in 4k during the forest chase and the 'I married Rambo' sections

They'd probably just stick Arnie's face on him, like they've done in other films. It's been ages since I saw the film, though, so is his build noticeably different or is it just the face?

Hi. I really enjoy your channel, thanks for all your good information. I am curious if there is a possibility I could petition a boutique company like Kino to consider making a blue ray for the movie THE MATCHMAKER from 1997. I tried streaming it, but it was nowhere to be found. I have the dvd, but getting it on blu ray would be grand. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I will always prefer to watch movies on a disc. In fact, this summer, I will not only be watching movies again on DVD but I will also be picking up some new ones that I dont have yet and watch those. I also prefer to watch it on bed on my TV. Its always so satisfying opening up the DVD player and putting in a disc or taking one out. Late last year, I finally got my very first blu-ray player. I am not sure how many blu-rays I will get for it though.

I still think the main downfall of DVD is the hard to open cases and cant skip or FF the screens that come before the movie itself. So when streaming came out people were like "oh nice, we no longer have to struggle to open a DVD case just to watch a movie. And we can skip past the stuff that comes before the movie".

I have some recommendations. For starters you can do a Live or recorded show. Superchats for live/ KZbin comments for pre recorded. It will make for a small weekly income. You can grow from that. More interactive show would make for more interesting show.

I agree a 4K of the 1933 'King Kong' would be a nice-to-have and maybe given the connections either John Landis or Peter Jackson would lend their name and / or expertise. Here in the UK we have an excellent 104-min Blu-ray version from Warner Brothers via the HMV Premium Collection that is a remaster of the 1933 version and includes the scenes that were thought too shocking for the 1938 to 1956 re-releases. The HMV Blu-ray comes with some great extras including a commentary with Ray Harryhausen, Ken Ralston, Fay Wray and Merian C Cooper.

Great show, loves viewer questions. Sorry I missed it. The Devils and Caligula are two different movies IMO. Caligula was glorified porn, The Devils was too religious where Christianity gets kind of attacked. So I can see why one can be released and one can't. Having said that Jeff, I love watching your stuff and after subscribing and then for some reason unsubscribing I've re-subscribed and although I don't always agree with your opinions you stick to your guns and have education to back it up.
