Good day sir, personally I prefer Diesels over petrol. When it comes to their chemical composition, both Diesel and petrol are hydrocarbon fuels, but the ratio of carbon to hydrogen is higher in Diesel as compared to petrol and hence for the same mass of Diesel and petrol, Diesel will emit more of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. This is why Diesel is considered more polluting as compared to petrol.
