Give Me An Answer with Stuart & Cliffe Knechtle

Program 3021 ................... - Social Contract - Church History - Manuscript Evidence
The "Give Me An Answer" ministry began as an outgrowth of the dialogues Cliffe Knechtle has had with students on various university campuses throughout the United States. These universities include the University of Maine, Harvard, MIT, University of Florida, University of Texas, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Diego, Berkeley, Stanford, University of Hawaii and the University of Washington. Cliffe spoke on these campuses in front of the Student Union or Library at noon for five to ten minutes. At the close of his initial remarks, he'd open up the time for questions and answers, which usually turned into a two to four hour dialogue with students. His crowd size ranged from 25 - 500 students at a time, and between classes, new students would join the discussion. This is an extremely effective way to reach a large number of university students with the Gospel of Christ.

In 380 CE, the emperor Theodosius issued the Edict of Thessalonica, which made Christianity, specifically Nicene Christianity, the official religion of the Roman Empire. Most other Christian sects were deemed heretical, lost their legal status, and had their properties confiscated by the Roman state. Then over next few centuries the power of Rome enforced this law over the empire via imprisonments or death sentences for any non approved places of worship. Without force my ass.

It's actually pretty funny, because in most comics, Spidey is a Christian. He's shown to pray and say grace multiple times to God in the comics and even in the movies. His most famous line "With great power, comes great responsibility" also reflects on God with having to make hard choices and allowing free will to exist. Obviously, this doesn't support not deny the Bible, but it's just an interesting point to make.

@@sickboy666fu Now you want me to read an individual's idea, but I can’t read and believe what the Gospel says? For something to become history, it takes a second, meaning whatever you did a second ago is history. That means, I cannot trust nor believe on any history that has be writing by human. Then, you are telling me to believe or read something by a man that I know for a fact hasn’t been able to physically go to the places where the Bible was written and prove everything is wrong. Tell me: Which history was written by a man I should trust? Now, why did I decide to believe in the word of God? The Gospel talks about things that no other man could think about and speak about it. Human is so predictable that I know for a fact: No human could believe and then say: Love Your Enemies. That never came through my mind until I read it from Jesus' Gospel. If you think those are common words, then you are an arrogant individual that doesn't want to accept that comments like that came out from somebody out of this world. Only one man said those words, Jesus. That's only one of the thousands of things he said through the Gospel. His teachings are transforming people. No other book calls God: Heavenly Father; if you think those words are ordinary, I am sorry, but they are not. Who was the first man to call God Father? Jesus when he calls God, Abba. I am telling you, you have to humble your mind and heart and study what Jesus taught and said.

The students are being sent into an environment where they’re supposed to be challenged and tested but are instead softened and protected from the very thing that furthers their mind and sharpens their intelligence, not to mention failing the very task of a place of learning. Some great universities still exist, yet many have strayed so far from a worthwhile institution.

This is the sad part. If I was to have never even picked up a chemistry textbook and never to have even spoken to somebody about the subject of chemistry and then I go to the department head of an ivy league school to tell him why his understanding of chemistry is wrong, I would be an utter laughingstock. Most of these people who thrown out criticisms of the Bible have never even cracked one open and have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. On the other hand, there are plenty of "Christians" who don't know much more that are making some very silly statements/claims about what is written therein and that doesn't help the cause at all. TL;DR Read up on a topic before opening your mouth and giving an opinion on the subject.

I have struggled with terrible sins my entire life, and was convinced that I was hopeless to overcome my wicked ways. It wasn’t until God performed a miracle in my life and called me to repentance. I know for a fact it was a work of God because I was a slave to sin. Christ has set me free from sin. 0:00 "There's a rational god who created you and me with a rational mind" He simply asserts it here with nothing to demonstrate it's validity. It boils down to, i simply say so. Regardless of anyone else's ability to show otherwise, it has no bearing on whether his proposition, that a god exists, can be demonstrated to be so. 1:24 "Who defines better?" An apologists trap by asking a question they already have a script for. But let's proceed. We do. More accurately society at large. As we move forward with the people around us we interact and sometimes we come across problems in a one on one situation, hopefully we can sort things out. If not we move on to legal resolutions. And ultimatley if this is a new issue laws will be put in place for future rulings. All metrics show we are now better off (in most countries) than at any other time in history. The Nazi and black examples are typical of apologists when they want to show an extreme example of people not agreeing. Yes, sometimes thing get bad before we get better and we go to war because of it. Welcome to the last 10,000 years of civilization. Duh! 1:50 Spider-Man saying he is catholic did not bode well for him, as the Nazis and the holy catholic church were, bed partners so to speak, and they have a lot to answer for as background participants/helpers in WW2. As for Apartheid another christian backed embargo on the rights of white and black Africans that again show religion being involved in causing dissention and exclusion. So far this speaker is shooting him self in the foot by mentioning these examples. 2:45 "Human beings have been created by god for a purpose...and that value comes from god." Again pure assertion. He assumes a god and runs with whatever script his brand of apologetics wants you to hear. I'm less than 3 minutes in and so far it boils down to this. I am assuming a god. We can't be accidents. god has a plan for us. I cant watch any more it's apologetics 101. This guy is a good speaker and knows his brand well, so to the casual observer he may be making sense to anyone who has a vague leaning in a god belief. But once you stop the think about what he is saying you can see right through him. I'm no expert, but even i can see what he is doing, asserting a god into reality. Nothing to see here ...move along...move along.

1:36 Not how I was taught either the ‘Three-Fifths Compromise’ or the Dred Scott case. The Three-Fifths Compromise was not about human worth, but about census data calculation for purposes of taxation and congressional representation, and it did not specify race, but only free persons and all other persons (though it included an added clarification regarding ‘Indians not taxed’, of which the latter portion is the the operative part). The three-fifths compromise stated that when counting population as in a census, non-free persons would each count as three-fifths of a person - meaning that the population statistics would be {# of free persons + (# of non-free persons * 0.6)}. This population statistic was used (as I said before) for determining the number of representatives a state would get, and so how much power that state would have in the congress. Because of this, the lower that fraction was, the better it would be for slaves or anyone else that wanted slavery to be abolished. The northern states wanted to abolish slavery, and the southern states that held slaves wanted to continue allowing slavery. The higher the population statistics a slave state could claim, the more power it had in congress to push for what they wanted, so if they didn’t have to reduce their ‘non-free persons’ count by 40%, and could instead just count 100% of that segment of the population (count each slave as a ‘whole person’), the population statistic would be higher and so the slave state would have more power to influence legislation - meaning they could use that power to better preserve, protect, or expand slavery. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZqlg6GBh7yFbK8. www.theusconstitution.org/news/understanding-the-three-fifths-compromise/ As I was taught it, the Dred Scott case was a technical argument regarding legal questions of inter-state comity and jurisdiction. A southern slave owner took his slave to a free state for a while before returning to the south, and the argument was about whether passing through and/or residing in that free state dissolved the legal ownership of the slave. A somewhat similar case had previously been decided in favor of the slave, but was not conclusive as precedent because in that previous case the slave (who was freed as a result of their case) was still residing in the free state at the time of the case, whereas Dred Scott had returned to a slave state and waited until his current ‘owner’ died before suing for his freedom - which also complicated the technical nature of the case. legaldictionary.net/three-fifths-compromise/ That said; Cliffe’s point still stands that if morality is a social construct then it is relative, subjective, and arbitrary - more of a pragmatic convention than any sort of absolute, authoritative prescriptive code of… well… morality. I agree with his overall point, I just want to correct the record to prevent the reinforcement of widespread misunderstandings that often combine with others to lead to bigger problems.

I was going to include a clarification of this point in my post, but it seemed too condescending when I read it, so I removed it. Here is a part of that original explanation: “I am not arguing for slavery or ‘belittling the abuses of slavery’ or anything of the sort. It is not an argument in favor of murder to point out that a particular person did not do any murdering, nor is it belittling the tragedy of murder to point out that a particular death was not a murder. Facing a terrible subject with clear thinking and rationality is not an endorsement of it merely because we do not lash out with frantic tears of rage and sorrow at anything resembling or tangentially connected to it”. He loves him, because he does not want him to burn. There is evil, otherwise it would be easy to love. But because people do you wrong it is much more difficult to love the enemies. Only the Father, which is the word, can love unconditionally. Accept the word and you will love unconditionally.

Muhammed Ali when returned from Africa said, "Thank God my grandaddy got on that boat." The morality of only doing good because it will benefit you, and you don't want a society where people do harm to others, is a selfish motivation and at the whim of whatever zeitgeist is currently in place. It is easy to look back at history and say how actions taken in that time was evil. But we don't control how history will pan out. We can't say how evil acts committed now may result in great goodness and flourishing in later generations or how apparent kindness now may lead to a sense of entitlement, apathy, and sloth in later generations. That is why we need to be born again, so regardless of the future results, we will know our actions have been motivated in faithful service to the LORD and to others for the furtherance of HIS kingdom and HIS family and not our own.

Everyone has such a problem with suffering they almost forget that we put ourselves in this suffering. We all sinned so that which is evil is not untouched by evil.

We all have done bad things....but it is only a religious ideology to call it "sin". I don't consider "sin" to be a relevant concept.

@@DRayL_ sin means missing the mark. You hold a standard on humanity and you cannot deny it. You hold morality over others like as if it ontologically ought to be. Therefore you believe in sin meaning missing the mark but you call it somethings else, maybe like, indecency, or being abnormal.

@@ahumbledelite4745 "Sin" is a religious concept. Not just "missing the mark",....but "the mark of a deity". Before "sin" can actually be relevant, there must first exist "a deity that requires your specific obedience". But as I stated, people do immoral things. They also do quite moral things as well. It is the unfortunate nature of our juvenile species that doing what is immoral comes all to common.
