Agreed. One of the main reason why I didn't bother with the survey. A bunch of people who will see the community post are already somewhat interested in lore. If anything, the survey simply categorized most of the people interested in lore. That aside, I honestly visit lore channels once every major trilogy is done and just before a new region drops to simply catch up. And the video was quite entertaining too. I'm so glad to see the my favorite math subject being used in IRL stuff lol

The confusion is obvious since Ei very much prefers to be referred as Baal by the people of Inazuma. She took her sister's name as her own and only the closest to her know her true demon name. Even Zhongli refers to her as Baal lol It is not too serious of a matter as many think.

For me it's exactly as Aster said: I only read in detail about characters I'm interested in. Like Navia is a great character, but I really don't care about her outside of the story itself. Same with Ayaka. I see so much Ayaka that I actively try to avoid anything extra, but I desperately want to see more Ayato (who they always seem to write out in place of his sister or someone else). So I think the survey might actively reflect that.

The thing about trustworthyness is that getting 50% right in a structured lore video is still 100% better than having absolutely no clue about what the game was trying to say through random books and scattered item descriptions.

I know that personally, I put neutral for the secondary sources trustworthiness due to the fact that they (at least the ones I watch) usually make it clear what is speculation, theory, or cannon information.

A decent chunk of Genshin's lore is delivered in a similar manner to Dark Souls, and your survey reflects what the Dark Souls community tends to do. There is a subset of players who love to dig and piece the puzzle together, and many who are interested but are happy to let others do it for them. However, Genshin is on-going, with new information being added all the time, meaning the process of piecing the puzzle together and providing that information to the group who just wants to consume the final product is never-ending and can be arduous. Personally, I think that part of the reason "Genshin players don't read" is a common sentiment is that folks who are happy to let others put the pieces together for them are less likely to attempt to retain the information themselves. The act of ruminating on the details and piecing them together also solidifies them in your mind. Someone who might watch a theory video every once in a while, might forget a bunch of details from quests they did a year ago, even if that was an Archon Quest.

Also the fact that... We kinda don't see that lore integrated into the world helps none. This is more akin to FF 13 than darksouls actually. In darksouls you see in the world what is or has happened in the lore. Unlike Genshin and FF13, which gives you gigabytes of lore and says "good luck!".

Due to its ongoing nature the game is withholding facts that are actually known to everyone in-universe. Like the Archons who only get voicelines about other archons after said archons recieve story quest. The only reason Zhongli can't tell the player what the names of all other Archons are is because the updates haven't been released yet, not because he forgor and only remembered when he read the morning newspaper.

I think most players read what their interested in, and dont pay attention to the rest. Most missunderstandings seem to stem from misinterpretations and consuming unreliable secondary sources. The dont read statement also fails to account for how much actual lore is in the game, which makes it easier to forget stuff.

I read lore, but more seriously only after Enkanomiya and Chasm was released. Their stories were rather grim and mysterious, so I get more interested to know what happened in between through items description and NPCs dialogue. The starting regions of course was interesting in its own right. But back then with so many random characters helping you throughout the archon quest, I had the expectation they will spoonfeed me the rest of the lore. And my main reason watching lore videos? I have a hard time grasping texts written like academy papers or poems, so I need someone else to decipher the meaning.

There are a lot of interesting topics I feel like people are misinformed on. Arlecchino - How much she cares about the children of the house of hearth ( reading their character stories will show you she cares a lot) Traveller - Them being a minor they have for the fact that they're older than they look but a lot of the other characters have asked them to go out for drinks. Mona - the surprising amount of people think she's poor and don't know she gets a lot of money she just spends it really quickly. There's a lot more but yeah have you eaten proper food

Sadly Mona being revealed as not being poor is only revealed full on in the second archipelago event I think her voice lines hint at the fact she’s terrible when it comes to managing money but not that she would be absolutely loaded if she was good at it. Having been one of the participants of the survey, I would gladly suggest Aster on another survey probably on r/Genshin_Lore (100k members so far) for a larger sample size. Well, there's bias mostly on quantitative research much with the number of people sampled, and the discussion and conclusion gathered.

3:17 this is normal for most gacha games. If anything Genshin was alr not normal that it has that "high" of entry rate so late, although it's also sort of cut by the negativity going around the community. Plus yeah, people who might see your survey are prob people who bothered to hang around the community. You said it yourself with quantitative study. If you want better accuracy, you should come to streamers that like to badmouth Genshin instead (so maybe people like Tectone and Mtashed). See how much it changes.

I do want to read the lore for myself but most of the time I get confused in the timeline of the events and also in what order I actually should read, not to mention that I have to go and research about a lot of unknown things about mytholgies and plays and everything that I just don't have the time to know everything about so I prefer to watch the videos made by you or other youtubers to understand certain topic and also get to know the previous limited time event's actions. There's also the point of how scattered the lore is but that may just be me being lazy. For me in regards of secondary source information is that im always skeptical of it, no matter if it may be true or not. i dont outright believe everything that is said at face value (this is most likely for theory style media) but if theres proof AKA written down or said in game it holds better water

On the part of secondary sources, I tend to go on comment sections of videos on youtube and such and pretty much any social media and if people happen to talk about genshin lore I also like to join in, though I have to say in hindsight some of the stuff I have said about Sovereigns is a little inaccurate now so I might have to go back to that one specific instagram post. Most of the stuff I say anyway though is just a somewhat simplified version of the lore I got from watching your videos or other lore channels. I guess that makes me more of a tertiary source

The lore is what keeps me playing. I really enjoy the story and the theorycrafting. The game is beautiful and fun but the gacha system, the way resources are handled, and some other things get extremely irritating and turns what should be a fun game into a tedious job. But that could be a me thing 🤷‍♀️ I'm an aging mmorpg veteran which is a minority in Genshin's playerbase.

I started playing Genshin in September 2023. Before that, I just watched playthroughs of the game on KZbin for about 2 years. So I’m familiar with the general lore and history. I am also familiar with some lore hypotheses, analysis of texts, locations, esotericism - which is the foundation of the game (and even then not completely). However, I cannot build a single coherent version of what is happening. There is little concrete information, there is a lot of water in the story, and the developers themselves give little specifics.

I think the reason why I'm mostly good with series and franchises with complex and large lore is thanks to both Digimon and BlazBlue. Digimon because there's a huge amount of sources that become outdated quickly and other times are lost, but when there's something discovered it kinds of contradicts many things. BlazBlue is because they love to introduce new concepts and terms in such a short amount of time, and then you have Nine and her sister's lore explained through a visual novel that seems to not connect with BlazBlue at all until we were shown Nine's design.

I'm most interested in lore regarding Khaenri'ah, The Travelers, The Abyss Order, Celestia, The Three Realms, Unified Civilization, Gods, Wars, basically anything large in scale and powerful. I'm not too interested in character specific lore and relatively small interactions between ordinary humans. For example Gurabad didn't really interest me as it is pretty small and insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But I was interested in anything regarding Forbidden Knowledge.

I love genshin lore, so much that it is ironically also the reason why I burnt out from the game. I just can't find that rewarding feeling from piecing up those lore crumbs together after hours of reading. Because no matter how good the lore is, it's not relevant to the main story and will never be talk again once the related world quest finished. You have all this amazing lore about mysterious ruin of old city and kingdom from pre-historic era that you explore along in the world quest. But then you have this main story called archon quest that just mid at best with exception like climax and cutscenes with super bloating dialog. At the top of that you also have all this filler called character quest, hang out, and events because most event just us attending festival in different region anyway. The fact that they voiced all these stories that not even nearly as interesting as the actual lore but left the world quest unvoiced is enough to tell me how much the game itself (un)care about it. Signora out of nowhere revelation as the crimson witch is one of the example why reading lore in genshin is just not worth it.

There out to be a survivorship bias on secondary source reliability. The ones we deem unreliable, we drop. The ones whose interpretations we do see as reasonable or that keep getting confirmed are the ones we go back to. So, in the end of the day, we consume more seeming-reliable-to-us secondary sources, raising the accuracy perception. (One particular analyst earned my subscription by predicting the 'fontanian oceanids' twist a month early, which was *the wildest thing*, but not only proved correct, but might frankly be the reason I could stomach it from the game - it felt far-fetched, but if someone saw it coming, it can't have been *that* far-fetched)

The problem with the AR60 measurement is that some people (eg me) deliberately avoid AR60. But I have all the XP built up to immediately get there and as a consequence my XP is converted to Mora the same as if I was already at AR60.

Archon quests are mostly voiced so no reading needed but ik read un voiced texts in archon quests an character hang out or character story quests. I read character stories and quest items lol and things I find in the open world . Oh and about all the animals and places in the archive I very rarely read item descriptions and iv read like 1 book lol unless it was part of a quest. There’s just so much to read an I’m not a huge fan of reading. I think I might read more then the average. Oh I skip a lot of weld quest text lol cause it can be long, wordy and boring lol

I said this in the survey and I’m curious what you all think. “Do you think Hangouts are focused more on than the story quests? I usually focus more on them than the 5 star story quests because they have multiple endings and options. But for 5 stars there are times where I just skip through the dialogue because I get bored at times”

It'd be easier and more worthwhile to read all the ridiculous amount of lore available if 1. the story had an ending which it doesn't yet and 2. if there wasn't a ridiculous amount of it. I'd rather just watch videos of compilations of it and other people's impressions of it. There is always stuff that I have to do in Genshin to build characters and complete quests, I just don't wanna add reading all of the lore to that.

I can understand why people trust secondary sources so much. Most of us learn the lore for entertainment, so we’re pretty much fine with getting a few details wrong here and there

Not really that surprised people have high trust in secondary lore. Generally the two most likely misunderstandings are from context or injecting too much of a personalized input. The cost vs gain of actively decieving someone in lore is generally unfavorable, and MOST of the time someone can play to verify another's statement. I for one certainly never heard of any malicious deceptions related to the lore. The only thing that doesn't make sense are the shippers and flirty people, that is if you are like me and you've embraced many friends, called them brother or love, sworn vows to stand by them, etc. But thankfully I've never seen them delude newbies with misrepresented information.

One thing you missed out for this is including genshin's cultural ties in its lore or ties to it in other hoyo game sbut i guess thats more of a theory thing

One thing I’d like to add is that as your followers the participants may be more interested in lore than the general playerbase.
