wish more people recognized that on top of what doctors do for a living, they had to put in so many years of work to make the money that they do. it’s not just a “my parents were rich so i became a doctor”
@fr33dave5
@fr33dave5 Жыл бұрын
I don't see a lot of people say that about doctors. What people criticize is that the expense of schooling to become a doctor is so high that it lowers the amount of people who see it as a viable career option. They are priced out of it. That and to be able to devote so much time to studying to become a doctor you need some kind of support system (the US being a hyper individualistic country doesn't really appreciate support systems like other countries do). Money helps a lot in the kind of support system you need, which is why a lot of doctors (not all obviously) tend to come from at minimum upper middle class backgrounds. If you look at countries that have more affordable higher education (or fully tax paid and still arguably cheaper) than the US has, there is a much higher rate of doctors per capita. That is the issue I think people really have. What I tend to hear is, "You're a doctor? You must have come from a rich family." It is not saying that they became a doctor because they have rich parents, it's saying they had the support structure in place to allow them to become a doctor. When people mean Rich in that context, they usually mean upper middle class and above.
@rareGUNDAM_
@rareGUNDAM_ Жыл бұрын
@@fr33dave5 well put! generally what i was aiming at is the fact that (in my opinion) the amount of hard work that goes into years on years of schooling, gets overlooked or overshadowed by the choice of profession itself. whether you had the ideal support system in place or not, it takes a lot of time and dedication.

7:18 This is my favorite interview. He says what I wish were being said on most of these types of video interviews. Go for the money, so that you can afford to follow your passion! Because it usually doesn't work the other way around. My favorite: don't come to NYC, experience the world. The life you can have in New York, you can probably have it better in Charlotte, NC! So true.

I love the idea of working hard and grinding to support your passion. This may be obvious (and I'm currently doing so, unintentionally), but hearing it is quite true. You don't have to love your day job (regardless of the pay), but understanding that even being a 'starving artist' today means working hard is quite relieving. Even if you aren't where you'd like to be, you are likely at least making progress. 🙌😊

7:19 and 8:29 Have the best responses as to how I can't understand young people or I feel just people rushing New York. Don't go there because you think it will help make money, find a good steady profession like the one at 8:29 pointed out with the trade skills and you'll always make decent money but the difference is, you'll be able to do it anywhere in the world like what the guy at 7:19 was talking about. I never in my life wanted to live in new york and I probably never will. Once upon a time I used to wanna go there just to see the ball drop but I don't even care for that anymore

1:11 yeah... I work with doctors all of the time and they're underpaid compared to what the cost of Healthcare is. It takes a minimum of 11 years to become a doc and like this doc says their studying never ends because healthcare is always evolving. Often times the docs I work with have to come into the office on their days off to catch up on charting. 250k as an average sounds like a lot, but these guys are often working around 50-60 hours per week and have a ton of debt from school. Then once those actual doctors paychecks hit they want to buy nice houses and cars. Doctors often carry huge amounts of debt, work a ton of hours per week, and they're underpaid. I think you'd have to be insane to want to become a doctor in today's time.
