This nest was so well hidden that an allergic client of mine, mowed over this nest and was swarmed! I had to remove this nest quickly, and thoroughly! Assassin underground yellow jacket nests can be deadly, so its paramount that the nest is REMOVED, not just a attempt to treat it and left to die.
Once the nest is removed, and Im finished appointments for the day, I bring the nests home, and fed them to my Emus, Chickens, and Rhea!

That’s how we discovered the yellow jacket nest that set up shop inside the back wall of my house last year! I’d been in an out of that part of my backyard a million times without incident, and then I had a tree-cutting crew out there on Halloween cutting down some trees I wanted out, including several along the fence line near that particularly. I heard the chainsaws suddenly stop, followed by a volley of swearing, and I looked out the window to see the yellow jackets swarming out! Fortunately nobody was hurt, but our next call was to the exterminator! Here’s the kicker-this October, my dad called out the same tree-cutting crew (they’re one of the local companies) to get rid of some trees and trim some others at _his_ house, and while they were trimming the crabapple tree by the garage, they came across a hornet’s nest the size of a football used by the NFL! Again, none of us knew it was there, and again we’d been in and out of there all summer! Fortunately it was a hornet’s nest instead of a yellow jacket’s nest, and equally fortunately it was first thing in the morning in October, and those little guys were too cold to get annoyed. When Dad pointed it out to me and my kids at Thanksgiving, our mutual reaction was “Holy F***!!!!” Thank the gods for hard-freeze weather!

@@dragondancer1814I remember stumbling upon those damn ground jackets as a kid when walking my dogs, right at the dog poo station they’d set up camp, and I didn’t know that till they flew out at me. They chased me all the way into my house, got stung on my middle finger, and on my neck, certainly haven’t forgiven them since. Been irrationally terrified of all things that go buzz ever since. They even gave my dogs a good stinging, my poor girl had a sting mark on her ear until she passed.

I was standing in line with my classmates, just minding my own business, and I suddenly felt a sharp pain on my upper thigh. I looked down to see a yellow jacket on me, and you know I was pissed! I’ve hated those little bastards ever since!

I once had a ground nest in my back-yard. I placed a large squirrel-cage fan from a mini-compuer (this was the 1980s) over the entrance, and spent part of an evening on my back deck listening to the "ting! ting! ting!" as insects would leave the nest, get sucked into the fan, and turned into minced wasp. The next morning there was an impressive plume of wasp bits downstream of the fan.

That was a lot of future queens in the nest. Given the number of them it's safe to say there would have been multiple colonies not too far from the original nest. Doris wasn't easily swayed by fresh nest even though her little taste of freedom wasn't too long.

Those little yellow jackets will be on you before you even know it. I saw one on my knee when mowing and I waved it away. Suddenly I felt some stings and I gtfa. These were some powerful stings from some miffed yellowjackets. It was scary. Brought about 20 in the house with me. All were in my leggings and most were in the bathroom. By then they were all kinda intimidated and were no longer stinging. We got them with a bug zapping racket. I never would have guessed they were around. Mowed many many times and was fine. Your video has answered one question. How many queens? Just one? Wrong! Many, many queens! We let the colony collapse on its own but next year gonna try to discourage these queens next spring from living nearby and repel them into the woods away from mowers.

Been doing HVAC for 22 years in PA. They love underneath the outdoor unit pads and in the service disconnects. I always give them a tap and watch before I start working. Same thing on a roof doing commercial rooftop systems..they love the disconnects and the heating side of the system that’s not being used. No where to quickly escape on the roof!

You have a unique profession that gives you a strong insight into pros and cons of different shop vacs. You seem to run them for a fairly long time and also run into debris both wet and dry. I think it could be a good idea to do a couple review videos on the equipment you use and what you have found to be the best value for your money. My mother wanted me to mow her garden spot with her push mower so I started mowing. Mowed over a yellow jacket nest and was stung on my jaw. We waited till dark and poured gasoline down the hole and lit it. Next day I mowed over another nest. We again waited till dark to destroy the nest. The third day after the third nest I quit mowing😹😹😹😹

I have enjoyed many of your videos. A few months back I stepped on a underground nest, they were smaller, assumed eastern yellow jackets, I got a couple stings. I retreated. I didn't know where the actual nest was. Lots of leaves, vines, etc. in the woods. I came back and hit the general area with Delta Dust. I could see them covered with dust and saw where the opening was. The next morning, most were dead but I dusted the opening again. I don't have your gear or birds to feed.

It makes me so anxious when pets, especially birds when they've escaped. Sometimes they're hard to get back even when you find them! They don't cooperate as much as you want them to lol. Luckily our rooster is highly food motivated and it recognizes the sound of chicken feed shaking in a bottle. Glad you got Doris back

Loved the video! Found a hornet just sitting still on a storage rack shelf in my garage today. Got my trusty wasp jar with breather holes and delicately coaxed her into the jar with taps. Screwed lid on and took her outside. I think it was an Eastern; tried stinging the sides of the glass jar, but I didn't examine the abdomen markings. Successful release, and you deserve all the credit! You can't know how much your videos have alleviated my terrible fear of wasp and hornets. Thank you!👍💖

Great video like always. I'm glad you were able to locate and capture Doris and get her back into the enclosure, that was likely quite the task, I can only imagine how it went! I've had cats decide they were going to be the more dominant one cause all kinds of problems and it usually ended up having to take away the alpha attempting one, I feel for you. I think I have it about to have to happen to me again and I hate the idea of it having to happen. Sweety isn't living up to her name but, alone she might be.

I've been watching a nest here in Pasadena Maryland. Not sure what kind of underground yellowjacket it is. Anyway, colony has been dying as it got cold here. Was just down to 3 small bees coming up to get morning sun and going back down. Until this Saturday. It got warmer last 2 days. When I went to see the nest, there were the small ones and about 12 large queens or males, Idk which, pushing their way out of the tunnel! Didn't think anything was left in the nest. Would show the pics if I could. What's going on? Males or queens? And why don't they hibernate in the old nest?

I stepped on one when I was 8yo. I had crossed the RR tracks behind my house with the older kids. I was standing there and my leg started vibrating and I thought a train was coming. Got a wasp question. Im in the UK and go to car boot sales in summer. Means standing for hours in one spot whilst dozens (not exaggerating) of wasps get up in your face from 5am onwards. Just regular small wasps. No stings yet. Gently swatting them off seems to do the job. Tried DEET, lemongrass, mint, all kinds of remedies. But the whole joint is just swarming with them. Probably because of the bins and food trucks. Not just our stall. Its all around. Sorry for long message. But any tips. Its been good exposure therapy for my wasp phobia lol but getting a bit annoying.

I think the remedies might have been what aroused the wasps' curiosity to begin with, lolz. All I can think of on how to dissuade them is to avoid any colognes /perfumes and wearing vivid clothing colors, it has helped me when I've done yardwork. Try getting into a water-only shower before going to one of those events as well, and let your bare human smell do the rest of the work of letting wasps know you ain't food (yet).

I am in Australia and we have European wasps. I Walked into my fenced vegetable patch and was puzzled when my foot sank into the ground. I had not dug any holes in that area. As I lifted my foot, I felt an odd buzzing sensation through the rubber clogs I was wearing. Then a huge swarm of wasps came out. I ran back to the house, not a short distance, followed by the dog. I had about a dozen wasps hanging on my jeans, all attempting to sting. I isolated my self in the kitchen and crushed them with a rolled up paper followed by fly spray which seemed to do little to them. Once I killed them all I looked up the best way to kill the nest and armed with Baygon powder on a 20-foot stick and a dark red touch covered the nest. After a few days of no new activity, I dug out the nest, which was over 3 feet wide. The dog and I were so lucky not to get stung. I have bees now, so no more baygon powder.

We had yellow jackets nesting under our aluminum siding just above the foundation this summer. This was next to our garbage and recycle bins so we were around them a lot. They were never aggressive and I even had one fly into my ear but it didn't sting. Somehow they were getting into the house in the same area and appearing in our floor to ceiling front windows. We just kept catching and releasing them until fall and then we started swatting them instead. Years ago we had some in a different location plus some who nested in my old truck and those were very vicious and stung me several times. I have a live and let live attitude whenever possible.

Good God definitely has lots of queens ready for next year's generations. Most queens are born from early September to as late as December depending on your location since I live in central Texas our first hard freeze is around or before Christmas

I think your emus and chickens will be very happy when their favorite food arrives. There are many wasps and hornet larvae. I've seen hornets sting people. It's very scary because hornets sting people who are allergic to hornet venom.

This reminds of an incident from my childhood. At one point in the winter one of my parents had lit a large lantern we had outside of our house ( it was partially sunk into the ground for stability). So after they lit the fire inside we were enjoying the night until I notice that the lantern was buzzing. Long story short a swarm of hornets had made a small nest inside and when the fire was lit it was directly under said nest which then caught fire. ( The lantern had a door that opened in the side so the nest which had been attached to the top was undisturbed prior) The next morning we opened the lantern to see the aftermath and the colony was torched and all that was left of the hornets was one whose wings were burnt off .
