In 1929, the AAA Contest Board decided that the Indy 500 would be restricted to "stock parts" only, in an effort to reduce costs and encourage American car manufacturers to participate. The 1930 event was mostly filled with Stevens, Millers, and Duesenbergs, but one privateer (Russ Snowberger) had a strong showing in a Studebaker. This caught the attention of Studebaker president Albert Erskine, who rightfully believed that a win at the Indy 500 would build prestige for the company.
Chief Engineer Barney Roos and lead tester George Hunt then commissioned Indycar specialists Rigling and Henning to build a chassis, which was then sent over to Studebaker to be fitted with a brand new 6 liter straight 8 engine from a Studebaker President, with every high performance option attached. Bodywork fabricator Floyd "Pop" Dreyer even fitted a President grille to the car, making it as close to stock as possible.
Entered by Ab Jenkins and driven by Tony Gulotta, "The Hunt Special" started the 1931 Indy 500 in 19th, just 1 mph off the pole sitters pace. Gulotta drove a careful race, slowly gaining positions until leader Billy Arnold spun on lap 162, crashing into the wall and losing a wheel. Luther Johnson was unable to avoid the accident and speared Arnolds car, spilling fuel and oil onto the track. Miraculously both drivers and riding mechanics survived, but an 11 year old boy was killed by Arnold's errant wheel. 5 laps later Gulotta (who was now up to 2nd place) spun on the oil and crashed into the same spot as Arnold. Coincidentally Russell Snowberger would again finish in the top 5 with his custom Studebaker.
After a win at Pikes Peak in 1931, Studebaker had 4 more identical cars built for the 1932 Indy 500, finishing 3rd, 6th, 12th, 13th, and 15th. Then again in 1933 for 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th.
As you would expect, with their diminishing performance and the financial woes of the Great Depression, Studebaker decided to halt their motorport program after the 1933 race.
