Assetto Corsa | The VRC Touring Car Challenge on LFM is BRUTAL!

Welcome to a new Low Fuel Motorsport season, and welcome to a brand new series on Assetto Corsa. The VRC Touring Car Challenge gets underway today at Brands Hatch, aiming to replicate the golden age of touring car racing.
I’ll be starting from P6 on a grid of 21, so I’ve given myself a great chance to fight for a top five here in my first race of the AC LFM season. These classics certainly aren’t for the feint of heart though - it’s going to be a real battle for survival…

Personally, I'd 100% report the dude pushing you off track repeatedly. At best, he was utterly oblivious and neglegent, intentionally wrecking at worst.

Thanks, yeah my first instinct was that it was beyond the line. But as always, I start doubting myself! Should I have gone for the gap? Did I slide into his path? Those types of thoughts. Definitely felt like he turned into me when I crashed out… maybe not using a radar, but the onboard showed he could see where I was. Cheers 😃

But my problem is I lack confidence in myself - I immediately start to doubt myself, and question if it was my fault after all. It’s not just a sim racing problem for me, it’s in other aspects of daily life too. But it’s reassuring to hear so many people say the same as what I first thought… it’s a big help to build my confidence and make me think that, just maybe, I was right after all! Thank you 😃

He is literally smashing you out of the way mate. Absolutely worth reporting this behaviour, it’s exactly the kind of thing that puts a lot of us off of racing online. The online racing world would be a lot better without someone like him involved in it. You did nothing wrong whatsoever other than end up in the same lobby as someone who would rather cheat their way to glory than to get there fairly.

@@chrisrogerssimracing Watch some of Jimmy Broadbent's sim stewards videos for a feel as to how stewards might see things. With regards to that, he'll say the move was fine and the the other guy "couldn't just drive through you as if you weren't there" (seems to be his favourite catchphrase). The gap was there and he could likely see you so had time to react appropriately.

IDK, those seem like bad awareness by a rookie to me. I see stuff like that in Rookie MX-5s on iRacing all the time. Not justifying or saying it's not reportable, but I doubt it was intentional.

I haven't even finished watching the video yet, and Furlan needs to be black flagged. He's a menace. He either doesn't care and would rather bash his way through a race, of he has zero situational awareness. He hit you multiple times and when you had him on the back straight (5:42), he clobbered you instead of giving you space. You were WELL alongside him and that was a clean and fair pass. You have nothing to blame yourself for!!! (now to continue the video with more comments to follow.) That battle for 9th was great! Yeah, I agree that it's too bad it ended with him losing it instead of continuing the battle. But a position is a position! :-D Ending the race in 5th was an awesome result! Great to see yet another clean race of yours, and too bad not everyone else on track can drive the same way.

Thanks Eric, it’s good to hear so many views on the incidents. My initial thought was that I’d done nothing wrong, but then I start doubting and questioning myself! Like whether I ran in too hot, or barged through too aggressively. I suspect maybe he was driving without a radar or spotter, and maybe wasn’t so aware of where I was. I sure was pretty annoyed when I crashed out, but it’s crazy to think it actually didn’t cost me many (or any) positions by the end of the race!

After being a fan of this channel for quite a while, this video finally made me dust down my old Logitech DFGT wheel, register on LFM, practice for 15 minutes and then enter my first race there in the Clio Cup. It was so much fun I immediately decided to buy the VRC Touring pack as well (and join the CR Simracing team), so maybe see you on the track some day (if I am able to climb up to some higher split - big if)!

Exactly! To be honest, I thought I’d blown my top five hopes as soon as the lights went out, never mind the crash a few laps later. I knew there would be freebies up for grabs, but wasn’t expecting that many!

@@SimRacerGT973 I like to use the clutch, but I can’t in AC… must be something I need to change in settings, but currently I can’t shift into 1st gear with the red lights on. So I had to just to the ‘shift into 1st as the lights go out’ technique. Which didn’t go well!

@@chrisrogerssimracing Yeah I think that is some kind of auto setting on LFM. My technique is to hold the clutch and when the lights go out I shift to 1st and drop the clutch at the same time, damn near slamming the throttle 🤣😂. It's a tricky process but once you get it down it really pays off because the launch is so much quicker. 👍

Touring cars at Brands Hatch GP circuit used to be my favourite combo on RaceRoom (whatever happened to that SIM??) . They are so difficult to drive with the amount of power that had coming through the rear wheels. The LFM experience looked amazing and that was a great race to watch. Well done on grinding out a good result.

Haha thanks, must admit I was pretty annoyed after the crash, but luckily I rejoined so far back that I had 1-2 laps of driving an empty track which helped me to calm down! Great race. People watch motor racing for the crashes. You rarely disappoint. 😂 I'd be raging after that punt by Furlan. When you're in cockpit view you can sometimes think it's someone else's fault but when you look at the replay, it's yours. This was not one of those. You made a clean pass and he just drove through you.

Yeah, it was VERY late to decide you’re switching to the defensive line. I think it was an honest mistake though, as he was very respectful when I made my next move at T1, gave me lots of space to pull it off safely. Certainly gave me a fright, though!!

Cheers. The only other one I tried was the Vauxhall, which I found really difficult to drive. I switched to the Honda to try something different, immediately felt a lot more comfortable in it, so stuck with it. When I’ve got a bit more time, I’ll try some of the others 👍

Good result Chris. I was in Split 2 on the first night you were Split 1 and we both had...disappointing results, i checked yours after! I got nailed by a spinner and had to come in for repairs, but the nature of these cars means a lot of people throw it off towards the end. My biggest issue is having no clue with the setup! I really hope they keep this series going, along with the TCR's. Have you tried the Clio at Pascani yet? Its a cracking track!

I’ve still not tried the Clio anywhere… I really must. And the F3 too. Yeah I haven’t touched setups here either… that first race I got collected when someone span in front of me at T1. So was on my own the entire race after that. I was driving the Vorax and it was really tough. Noticed most people were driving the Gojira, so switched to that for this race and it was much easier

Hell of a rough opening, but a great recovery and finish! I think you were being too forgiving of the other driver at 5:40. You were completely along side going into braking, and you were 100% passed at the turn in (and you passed another car later on at the same spot and there was no problem - proving it can be done and that you were in control). I think that Furlan driver was being a bit of an @$$ from what I've seen. Even before that incident you had made a move into the hairpin and were along side enough to be given space, but they turned into you anyway. And before that, after that off track to avoid the other car, they shoved you back on the grass while they had plenty of space, it was completely avoidable but they shoved you anyway. It also looked like they made contact with other cars too. Just desserts that they didn't even finish top 10. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh, but drivers like that are exactly why i quit open lobbies and only do private lobbies or special events now.

Thank you! Yeah I’m always a little bit over-critical of myself, but I’m not the type to go for a move unless I’m 90% certain I can pull it off cleanly. And you’re exactly right, the same move a couple laps later showed how it should have been done, had he not turned in on me! Yeah, this was my first time trying the car… I only bought the pack yesterday. But they’re fantastic. Very difficult to drive, but that’s not a bad thing… it makes it more rewarding when you get them flying!

Thank you. That’s just the standard in-game Tyres app that you can find in the right-hand expanding menu. I found it really useful, particular if you gamble on the soft tyres like I did. Gives you a good idea of when to,push, and when you need to back off a bit!

Tough decision. These tourers are very challenging to drive - they certainly need more time invested into practice. I really struggled and, judging by the number of crashes, so did a lot of people! But they are fantastic to drive… and sound great!

Love these cars, remind me of my childhood watching them at croft in 1998. Quick Q does the LFM Safety rating go across AC and ACC or are they specific to each platform?

Yes, likewise! And yeah, it’s one safety rating across all sims on LFM. I lost a chunk of SR in my first couple of AC races, which meant I dropped back into rookies on ACC as a result.

Nice one! I’ll get an early apology in now, in case you spend the next few races getting smashed out 🤣 I went with soft tyres and certainly managed ok, but then I don’t drive or brake too aggressively, so I didn’t really have any lock-ups. Started to feel a bit sketchy in the last 7-8mins but going about 0.5 to 0.8 a lap slower kept me feeling safe. As for fuel, I’m pretty sure I put 32-33 litres in. I think that cut it pretty fine, as my amber warning light was on by the end. May be worth adding an extra few litres to be safe. Good luck!

I use Medium tyres for the race and 33litres of fuel at Brands Hatch.

While I’ve had a couple of decent races on LFM AC, I’ve also had a bunch of really bad races with people intentionally ramming or being really negligent. Also had a couple races end when the fuel ran out despite using the default LFM setup / fuel load. It can be really frustrating.

Yeah I feel your frustration mate. It has a habit of happening in successive races too… you have a bad one, and then you have several more bad ones. It can get very disheartening, I’ve been there. But things will turn!

Thanks mate, yeah I felt a little bit hard done by… particularly for the crash. At least the others were all just bumps that I was able to save… but I felt like I’d done more than enough to earn the right to the apex at Hawthorns. Good to hear your views though, as I started to doubt myself 🤣

Yeah, it was way too late to be switching to a defensive line. However, I suspect it was an honest mistake, because the next corner he was really clean when I attempted the next pass, and gave me loads of space. So all good in the end 👍

That guy 100% new he was going to turn you after watching his on board he hits his brakes and times it he is one of those racers that cant stand getting passed and will smash you for it . I try hard to keep my cool but these guys ruin it for me

Yeah, I was pretty annoyed while I was stuck trying to get out of the sand. Thankfully, I had a couple of laps on a clear track, which helped me calm down a bit 🤣

Plenty of other sim racing channels for that, mate. I try to make something different, for people who enjoy this type of presentation. I know lots don’t enjoy it, and that’s absolutely fine… there are loads of other channels around to choose from.
