I'm not a makeup artist nor do I really want to be, I'm just someone who really loves makeup and stumbled across your channel. But your videos have opened my eyes to how hard of a job being a makeup artist can really be sometimes and I think people like myself who don't work in the industry just think being a makeup artist is all fun, glitz and glam. Seeing how much actually goes into being a serious makeup artist gives me much more respect for them.

Thank you so much I had no idea abt assisting and recently went to one, having no clue. I agree it's a very competitive world, I'm all about work ethics, and getting some cold shoulders has suprised me. If ure good, they don't like you, if ure not they're happy. Thanks a ton for sharing your experiences and knowledge. Lots of love from Madrid xoxo

Amazingly helpful! I am starting my career later in life at 36. I have worked in film and tv in Toronto in the sets/props department and am making the leap to makeup. I am very excited to get started assisting but have zero contacts so far. Do you know of any networking industry events I could participate in to meet some folks? Again, many Thanks for all of your videos! ❤
@AngieDiB7 жыл бұрын
YAY TANYA!!!! You may be able to find some Toronto MUA groups on Facebook and start there. Also think about the network you already have and if there is anyone that can connect you to anyone else to chat with or have a coffee with - just start getting out there and networking with photographers as well!

Where my concern lies is with details not directly associated with handling the makeup (aka holding their products, passing them products, etc.). For example, I know that a lot of times assistants have to coordinate things like making sure all of the models have arrived, or going out before the shoot to buy them a specific type of lightbulb for their ring-light (random examples but hopefully you get what I mean). Do you have any tips on how to be more of a quick-thinker or what to do in situations regarding random but complicated tasks/coordinating things that you may not be able to prepare for? Hope this makes sense! :)
@AngieDiB7 жыл бұрын
Totally makes sense! Experience is the best teacher for this and every artist and job is going to have different needs. If you can stay calm and expect the unexpected you will be fine and be able to think clearly. Where people run in to difficulty is when they think they are only there to do certain things and don't pay attention to what is happening around them on set. Similarly assistants run into trouble when they feel they are too good to do something for the artist the assisting as well.

Hi Angie, great video! I'm assisting a makeup artist for the first time this weekend for a wedding. Just wondering, If i arrive at the house early, is it best to wait for the makeup artist out the front?
@AngieDiB7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrea! Definitely! I prefer my assistants to wait outside so we can arrive as a team - great question! If you arrive early you can just let the artist know you are there and that you will meet them outside!

I'm totally up for this, the graft is par for the course, paying your dues as it were. But I cannot for the life of me find where these positions might be advertised in the UK!? Anyone know?
@AngieDiB7 жыл бұрын
Hey! These types of jobs will likely not be advertised - I would reach out to MUA's in your area, or start networking and try to find someone that is willing to have you on set to assist!
@kahte79116 жыл бұрын
Do you think it's possible to assist only during weekends or we should have full range of days avaliable... #singlemumtrouble xxxx
@AngieDiB6 жыл бұрын
That’s not an easy question to answer but the reality is if someone is looking for an assistant and you are often not available they will find someone else who is. If you can only assist on the weekends that works well for bridal hair and makeup!

I’m interested in what the pay rate usually is for assistants? Is it a flat rate, based on per hour, per person, or a percentage? I know it’s different based on each artist. Anyone willing to share their past experience?
@AngieDiB6 жыл бұрын
It could be any of these things. It depends on what the job is, who the artist is, what the client is paying etc. There is no standard rate or form of payment. Personally for me there are some jobs where I need an assistant all day that would be a day rate, sometimes I only need an assistant for and hour or two and I would likely pay hourly in this case - just to give you some examples.
@ang95meg6 жыл бұрын
Angie Di Battista thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly! Would you mind sharing the most you’ve paid an assistant for a wedding event?
@AngieDiB6 жыл бұрын
I don't share rates or pricing. It's one thing I will not be transparent about on this channel because our pay scales are not universal and are affected by so many different variables.
@ang95meg6 жыл бұрын
Angie Di Battista totally understandable! Thank you for your time and all your advice!
@abawitx7 жыл бұрын
Man this was good, but has made me not eager to assist now. Especially if the head MUA is going to be disrespectful towards you even if you are just an assistant or if Muas are very protective of their network and clients and dont want you to build your career out of jealousy, how do you even get going as a completely new artist to the industry? This is my concern.
@AngieDiB7 жыл бұрын
Good question. You definitely have to get over the fear of people not liking you, in any job you will come in to contact with people that you don't get along with and that is totally fine! The reason I mention this is because I have a ton of new artists that contact me who are devastated if things don't go well assisting and I do want to make people aware of the reality of our jobs. But again - every job has people that are difficult. Everyone has to start somewhere! If you want to get started and it is what you love to do assisting is a great way to learn and can open many doors for you.
