Associates degree in CM is definitely worth it. Started with a large commercial construction General Contractor as a Laborer/Safety Carpenter. Started going to school in the afternoons/nights and now I am a Field Engineer soon moving into an Assistant Superintendent role.

Especially liked hearing about the different certifications one may need. Will LEED be more popular in the future do you think?

Yes, LEED is definitely going to evolve as the world moves towards more sustainable practices!!! GREAT QUESTION 👍 👌

Sounds like you're on your way - I would just try to get in with a larger GC, that's going to teach you the most. You should start looking now - let them know you're ready to graduate.

I’m a Plumbers apprentice, will be getting my journeyman before too long ( I do commercial construction ). What degrees or certifications should I get to set myself apart from the competition to get into management.

Associates or Bachelors in Construction Management would be the fast track - but also most expensive upfront. That's if you want to work on the CM / GC side. If you want to work a management role within your trade I would talk to your company on what they need to get you into that role

I’m getting a bachelor’s in construction supervision. Do you think companies will care if your degree says construction management/engineering/supervision ( yes I have seen various schools have different names for the degrees lol) great content in the video btw thanks a lot!

I don't think it matters - there are so many different role titles in the industry that are not consistent. At the end of the day, we're all pretty much doing very similar things

I just got my associates for CM, but im struggling to start my career. I just wanna know is it best to call local GC around my area to ask for opportunities to learn from them. Do u have any tips on how can get started?
@planandspec
@planandspec 27 күн бұрын
Just start applying locally and anywhere you're willing to move, see if you can work with a recruiter (who is specific to construction), and just keep at it - look for project engineer roles at larger GCs / CMs

I’m currently working on my associate degree in CM. I am also a realtor with some investment experience and want to use what I’m learning to transition into a general contractor role starting off with my own residential projects to build/renovate and sell. Would this degree work in my favor?

It would certainly help - but running your own business vs. managing projects for another company are very different. You need to know more about running a business.

I start schooling next year to get my associates in CM. I’ve heard it’s pretty stressful. What are your thoughts and how has stressful is it for you?
@planandspec
@planandspec 4 ай бұрын
It can definitely be stressful, there is a lot to juggle the further you get into your career. The key is learning the job, learning construction, and being proactive which helps reduce stress. In my experience, the main stress factor is not knowing what to do in certain situations. Also, it's about taking care of yourself outside of work - finding means to reduce stress because life isn't just about work 😲

I've been looking for an internship as a project engineer. Do you recommend getting an internship with a GC or a specialty contractor.
@planandspec
@planandspec 4 ай бұрын
Depends on long term career plans, two different mindsets. But, for an internship go work for a GC because you'll get more exposure to sub trades - that will help you decide long term

hey i have an associate degree in building technology how can apply for a job in the usa
@planandspec
@planandspec 3 ай бұрын
Hiring websites like Indeed or go directly onto company websites, will be harder as you likely need a work visa and companies will likely prefer local hire over any international hire. Maybe search which US companies work overseas and start there

I’m in active duty army and getting out, will getting an associates degree still put me below someone with a bachelor for jobs?
@planandspec
@planandspec 4 ай бұрын
Not necessarily, there are lots of factors to employment - you could connect with an interviewer and share a background in the Army together, could be as simple as that. Companies dont just hire based purely on education, they hire to match company culture, work ethic, previous experience, etc.
@chazlyle41
@chazlyle41 4 ай бұрын
If a company is a good one they will care more about who you are as an individual and how well you fit the team culture than anything. I work with people who all have engineering degrees and I have a CM degree but the boss man liked how I fit the team more than the other Engineer applicants at the time. Case by case for sure!

Are there any other certifications that you would consider obtaining that are specifically for a PM/Superintendent?

I've gotten through majority of my career without additional certs, so I would only say get it if it's going to be directly impactful to helping your specific role.
