@Spencer Reed To me, Borderlands 3 was five steps on from Bl2, and then the character of the world takes 500 steps back until it's lying at the feet of Borderlands 1. Why the living fuck did gearbox, (you know, the guys who didn't put a lot of characters from Bl2/PS in BL3 because they 'didnt want to just have them in, rather than properly make use of them) decide that 95% of the fucking side missions be from random npcs around whose names and personalities have no real relation to anything. Seriously, Borderlands 1 is dull as fuck going back to it, because there's ass all in the world or characters. BL2 was amazing in pretty much every sense, and then they just kind of played twister with Bl3. Left arm on Shallow Characters and world...

Honestly, it's a pretty damn solid game, coming off of Awakening, Fates, Echoes and Heroes, which were all various flavors of "meh" for me. I do agree that a lot of the academy exploring gets pretty dull after a while - I went ballistic on buying fishing lures and fished myself up to Professor Level B+ (by the way, stockpiling lures and waiting for a Lots and Lots of Fish day is a slow, but surefire way to grind Professor Level), and after that I kind of didn't know what all to do with my free time. I also kind of wish that there was a way to retry a failed class change, because one of my characters failed to Mortal Savant, and I really wanted to get there before the War Phase on that save file, so now I'm just stuck as a Swordmaster and it makes me grumpy.

It's because he didn't get to anything he would dislike, like how the game can't pick a main villain, or things like the down to 1hp dark magic spell. I definitely do think it's second place out of all of the most recent FE games, but that's not really saying much when it's competition is a mobile gacha game, whatever the hell Fates was by the time localization got done with it, and a remake set in between two games, one of which we never got

The weirdest part of this game is how the twin you select is a silent protagonist, but the other twin is still there, talking? They're a major character, and they talk more than most others. But you never speak at all. It draws attention to the weirdness of the silent protagonist trope by making it seem like the twin you selected has some form of autism while you the player *know* they had a voice actor since you could've picked the other sibling in the beginning.

As fiddly as chain binding is, it's really great when you use the Auto Bind ability, since that just makes your pokemon do the whole thing itself. And with the Unchaining ability, you can just send them out and get on with your own side of the combat as they shoot, punch, and or slash things.

The one thing this game had going was its flashy combat. It just felt nice to stylishly destroy the chimeras. Once you master the sync attack system, it gets really fun. Oh, and the stop motion finishes are a cool touch. Also, I don't know if this was true for everyone else, but I got a good sense of skill progression as well. I started out get D's and C's on the combat sections and then I'd consistently get S+ once I got a hang of the controls and learned new skills. All this was on the standard difficulty too, and I've got to admit the game was challenging in some sections. All in all, I had a lot of fun playing it, but I really didn't care much for the story.

The main reason for Astral Chain being different from most of Platinum Games' prior works is most likely its director Takahisa Taura, who was the lead game designer of Nier: Automata. It just goes to show, that games are not made by companies - they're made by the people, who work there. Exchange the staff between two games and fluctuations in style and quality are bound to happen.

Here's a ground breaking idea. When everyone's monster turns against them, they actually don't since they all treated them nicely, while your monsters actually do turn against you because your character is a right bastard. Ok, so astral chain might be my favorite game this year. That said, you are not wrong XD. Honestly, the combat got me hooked and I felt the music was really cool. The story had an interesting set up but ended up not being meaningful in any way. Idc that the game doesn't say anything philosophically, but it doesn't seem to tackle the idea of human extinction with the severity that such an idea probably should. The writing was fairly weak and most of the acting was flat. But that combat system man, I couldn't put that game down for weeks because I loved it so much.

@@nomobobby absolutely. If a game has mechanics in place for stealth and the stealth doesn't bring progress to a screeching halt, then I am fine with it. Fire Emblem is a game of dice rolls where you just hope that the next dice roll goes your way and a few bad dice rolls means starting over; the fact that people played harder versions of the older games still baffles me, like you want the dice rolls to be even worse? How is the difficulty in this series fun to anyone? Why is permadeath desired in the dice roll game so much? At best, you can minimize the amount of bad dice rolls by playing in the most defensive and unfun way possible, but you can still easily be screwed over by one thing you didn't see coming or one critical hit from an enemy because crits are so strong that they are basically instant kills. The new one seemed to fix that by giving you time powers though, allowing you to control luck better, but everyone hates it. Of course, the new one looks fucking terrible though; all of the cutscenes are either this bizarre 20FPS incredibly choppy garbage CG anime looking shit or a bunch of characters standing in front of a picture. Most of the actual game looks fine, but I would say that the characters standing around thing is barely passable and the low FPS cutscenes are maybe some of the worst I've ever seen in any video game. Overall, still pretty good though.

Not sure it's fair to recommend based on the last boss. You could instead mention that the main characters rival is a Brazilian samurai mercenary that wields a legendary Japanese sword that has been improved by science to be rocket powered or some sh*t like that

If yahtzee hasn't played Darkwood yet he really needs to. I think it may be a game he will actually like. The unsettling atmosphere it builds had me cowering in the corner of the room praying for sunrise.

I am 100% on board with that rant about minigames and sidequests getting in the way of the gameplay I actually bought the game before. It's been becoming increasingly more prevalent for the last like 15 years and it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

is it weird if Yahtzee's belligerent constancy in the face of the ever-present change makes me happy? I've been listening to his reviews for years, and hearing that same intro/outro music is strangely... calming. It's like if a zombie apocalypse came Yahtzee would still be uploading Zero Punctuations somewhere

To be fair, Yahtzee, part of the restraint in Platinum Games' usual over-the-topness could be that both Nier: Automata and Astral Chain have had other teams/companies/creators working with them. Nier: Automata (and Nier as a franchise) is Yoko Taro's baby and while he has his own brand of crazy sauce, there was probably a lot of him being hands-on in the project, thus having less of PG's feel. Astral Chain, at least according to a quick google search, was sort of commissioned by Nintendo so they might have wanted to show more restraint with what could be a Nintendo IP versus Bayonetta 2 which was a PG IP supported by Nintendo. Edit: Also, both Nier: Automata and Astral Chain were directed by Takahisa Taura as opposed to Hideki Kamiya. So throw in some different styles of direction and newness into the mix.

Wonderful 101 is an IP owned by Nintendo and it ends with the heroes fighting a giant brain across the solar system...so probably not that.
@nicolaswarren3453
@nicolaswarren3453 4 жыл бұрын
@@jackgarcia5926 But the focus of Wonderful 101 was a parody of superhero/super sentai shows that are themselves over the top. Thus, being over the top fits with W101 perfectly. Astral Chain, while being anime, is supposed to be a cop game and needs to be a bit more down to earth. Also, again, possible difference between design philosophies between Taura and Kamiya. (Side note: That statement could also apply to Star Fox. No point to make, just smirk worthy.)

I remember this surprisingly good JRPG I forgot the name though but the first three main characters (By the way there was only three main characters at a time.) are the reason I remember this game, I can describe them like so: An anime dork, a blue Sasuke rip off, and surprisingly an actual drag Queen. The part that made me remember them was when the main antagonist kills off two of them at the end of the first act.
