that Ape Escape homage level is deadass probably going to be the closest we'll get to a new game without fans making a spiritual successor and it PAINS me because Ape Escape was the shit. from the music to the story that did not take itself seriously to the utter goofiness of making the collectables these apes that were trying to stay escaped. the gadgets using the second stick was probably the nuttiest idea for it's time as it really constantly leveraged that second stick, from the slingshot turning the game into a shooter while it was equipped to the saber and net making you smack the stick around to smack baddies and capture the apes, and the RC Car just deadass made you control the thing with the second stick!... okay maybe i won't miss the "spin the stick" gadgets as much, but the point is, Ape Escape really is a cool idea that i'd love to bust out my controller again for.

In a vacuum, I think it's fine for old series to disappear. The industry would be in a terrible place if all it ever did was regurgitate the same old IPs over and over. And fans would inevitably be frustrated if their beloved series' changed too much, and became something they didn't like. The problem is more that there aren't enough new IPs that are keeping the "spirit" of those old games alive. Not just replicating their game mechanics, but also trying to recapture their vibes. But also that we ARE seeing certain IPs get regurgitated over and over, and those series are dominating the market and the design space, leaving no room for anything else.

This game feels almost like a sequel for the Astro's Playroom game that was a launch title for the PS5 that essentially acts like a tech demo for all the things the PS5 controller is capable of, except that game was only like two hours long at most, and this is a full blown game.

While rudimentary, the bots were still adorable, and interacted mainly with your controller through a series of mini games Next up was The Playroom VR. A successor to The Playroom to demo PSVR features, this was the debut of Astro. Of the games in this tech demo, one in particular called “Bot Rescue” got really good feedback Seeing that positive feedback, the team pulled what they did here: they turned it into a full fledged PSVR game called Astro Bot Rescue Mission. This is where the core “Astro gameplay,” was solidified As many folks know, Astro’s next appearance was a pack-in tech demo for the PS5 aptly titled Astro’s Playroom. This was their first non-peripheral title and is quite the lovely experience. The common response from players was simply “I wish there was more” Now here we are, with more. This is the bots’ fifth outing and I am quite happy with Astro becoming PlayStation’s mascot
