The first time I heard this song... I'd driven about 40 miles to the 24 hr Walmart to purchase this album a little after midnight. I blasted it on the way home to Ashland (Oregon)... it was a cold summer night... my jaw was in my lap the whole ride... Nothing compares to hearing this opening gem on that gorgeous, perfect drive. Everytime I hear Wilco, I think of southern Oregon-- driving to hot springs, mountains, rivers, listening to amazing music...

Can you imagine having a lead guitarist as good as Tweedy in your band... and then adding Nels Cline to it because you just weren't satisfied with how unbelievably great your band already was? They work together so unbelievably well!
@MaxFenderbender12 жыл бұрын
I heard that Tweedy's totally fucking epic solo on this song is a "musical transcription" of a panic attack. As someone who's been having those for years I can attest that that is exactly what it would sound like if it was shreded out by a motherfucker of a guitarist. Jeff Tweedy is a goddamn genius.
@LysergiCoyotl3 жыл бұрын
One of my all time favorite guitar solos. The 'panic attack style' is pretty derivative of Neil Young so genius might be going a little far but Tweedy is a hell of a guitar player and sort of underrated. He did some spectacular things with tone on that album. Better fit for Wilco than Cline!

Most powerful song they have. I cry every time I hear it, and if I ever see them play this live, my life will be over.

I saw them at the summer stage in Central Park two very hot days before A Ghost Is Born was released. Jeff said "I hope you guys like this, it's a WIP. (Work in Progress)" Then he began it softly like this clip, and when the rest of the band kicked in, I did cry. So fully agree. Oh, PS. Sonic Youth opened those two shows.

Saw then live right before the album dropped as well. Played this song I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Melted my face off. Also heard “spiders” for the first time and was just blown away. Did 2 or 3 encores! Ended w “the late greats”, loved that live as well. Came to the show a casual Wilco fan knowing a few songs. Bought every album a few days later. To this day one of if not the best concert experience I’ve ever had. I had front row seats to AC/DC So that’s saying a lot.

I love how Jeff absolutely shreds on this. Then decides to get a full time solo guitarist for the _next_ album and we only ever got two tracks where he plays a relatively wild solo. That isn't sarcasm, I genuinely love it. Only somebody with absolutely no ego could do that for their music.

+Andrew Meyer Yes and no...Nels has said that he thought on A Ghost Is Born Jeff really came into his own. And he loved the album. He also stated that if he was asked to join during Summerteeth he would have declined, he felt it was to poppy, or surgery, for him.

@jrcenina859 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Berry bummer! well, if you can't find it or forget about it...it's cool. i vaguely remember reading (watching?) something about nels' appreciation of Tweedy's guitar playing and what you were talking about seemed familiar but a bit more fleshed out. Thanks "Either Way"
@matthewberry27449 жыл бұрын
I found it in the booklet with their four disc set 'alpha mike foxtrot-rare tracks 1994-2014'. On page 36, Nels discusses how he joined. I was partly wrong. He didn't say he wouldn't have joined wilco after summerteeth, he actually stated he probably would have. But he did feel the album was a bit too synthy/sugery. It's only a few paragraphs long, but a nice little read. And if you are a wilco fan and don't have this box set,I highly recommend it. Besides some great info on songs in the booklet, the music is stellar. Many unreleased tracks (live and studio) and alternative takes songs that made the albums
