Just to clear this up for all of you guys wondering, in the real world the control tower has a landline that it uses. The reason for having it is so when things like this happen, ATC can easily speak to the pilot without jamming up the frequency.

Maybe the JetBlue interrupted inbound traffic when crossing runway, presumably either deviated from assigned route or stayed longer than he should. One incident means nothing. A phone call, no biggie. Visit from the FAA, unannounced, no phone, call, no number, then I would worry. The number is for the FAA FSS, Flight Service Station, they are listed numbers. Prior to 9/11, you could call them for a tour of an airport. they are the first point of contact with the FAA most pilots meet.
@Cariv410 жыл бұрын

@DelfinoDelphis Monitoring a frequency means transmitting and receiving on the previously assigned frequency, while receiving on the new frequency.
@dodger20202011 жыл бұрын
In this situation, that phone number is one of the numbers for the tower at JFK. Whom you offended will determine whom you'll have to call. I've known people that had to call the tower, ground, tracon, etc. Usually it's for not following instructions. Depending on the severity you may just get a stern talking to. A warning. If it's something serious, they may file a report as well. These numbers aren't secret. Likely the jetblue flight wasn't following the given instructions.

ATC can't assume all aircraft have 2 COM radios. The FAA Pilot/Controller glossary is pretty clear on the matter. MONITOR− (When used with communication transfer) listen on a specific frequency and stand by for instructions. Under normal circumstances do not establish communications Again, I think we're missing some details here. Judging from the excitement in the controllers voice, I would guess ATC forgot he cleared him to cross 4L, or JetBlue got lost while turning right on to taxiway A.
@Amar760513 жыл бұрын
@13thLiberator That's pretty common. It happens to me while I am taxiing to the hold short line. Before I reach the hold short line I get cleared to cross.

@Crashboy1024 Might be some regional difference - in Europe definitely monitor means to switch to a new frequency - it is very rare to use two frequencies at once and pilot should be informed if that situation occurs. Still not all aircrafts are equipped with two radios.
@mourajini12 жыл бұрын
OK, I listened to this many times and I think I got it. Correct me if I'm wrong. JB was to hold short 4L. Before it got to 4L, Tower cleared JB to cross 4L and to monitor ground. JB crosses 4L and ground calls JB saying "what are you doing?"(which is not standard phraseology). JB was quite for a quite sometime. Why did the ground asked "What are you doing", and why JB didn't respond for a long time because JFK is very busy and that can be scary for the ATC.

half right. [Normally] there are 4 radios, on an aircraft. 2 Communications and 2 Navigation radios (DME). When a controller gives the instruction to MONITOR a frequency, they are expected to switch their second radio to the new frequency while remaining on their current one for instructions. When the controller instructs "FREQUENCY CHANGE APPROVED..." that is when a pilot should push their primary to the new frequency and contact the frequency. THIS probably pilot switched off frequency.
@JimMcHenry11 жыл бұрын
Umm, Monitor ground means to SWITCH to the ground frequency, but you don't call or talk to them unless they call you. Think we're missing an instruction here, because I don't see or hear where JetBlue did anything wrong.

@spartacus1287 Problem with that is that it is a lot easier to find out who was flying that jetblue plane at that moment in time. Unlike general aviation pilots where it can be anybody. If that controller really wanted to know who was flying that plane, he can call jetblue and find out.

@captainmorgan75710 жыл бұрын
It implies that you (the pilot) did something that you shouldn't have. Something that could go on your flying record that you wished was not there; not to mention perhaps a "friendly" visit from the FAA.
@at135711 жыл бұрын
No actually he was initially told to hold short of 4L and later was cleared to cross and turn right on alpha. My guess is that he probably made the wrong turn after crossing 4L and ended up on the wrong taxiway. So the issue doesn't seem to be that he crossed 4L without clearance. Anyway we're all guessing here, no way to know for sure.
@jaysmith140812 жыл бұрын
@cskog001 technically he did not read back the crossing clearance, which (im not sure what FAR that is) but if not doing so, may lead controller to think he was still holding, confusing him when the airplane crossed the runway to get to the other side.
@nxtvh9013 жыл бұрын
@1053857 runway incursion. When a control tower gives you a number to call, they want to talk to the pilot privately b/c they were on the runway while someone else was intending to use it. in this case, Jetblue took their sweet ass time to cross the runway when given clearance, which caused another aircraft to divert from their intentions.

That is not true. If tower tells you something along the lines of "monitor ground on 121.9" you are expected to change frequency to ground but not talk. Same with if they tell you to monitor tower. You change the frequency but do not talk. You wait for tower to call you. You are never *expected* to monitor one channel while remaining on the other. It's nice to do and extremely helpful but it's not required. "Frequency change approved" is basically an "official" goodbye from the controller
