At one point I had the LCA supported by a jackstand and it made no difference. I cut it from the video because the video was getting long. I live in the rust belt , This is one of those cases where there was no way this wheel bearing was coming out without a press.

Sometimes running into something that so hard to remove that was frozen on the spindle you might save lots of time and money by cutting it off go into a salvage yard buying another one rebuilding that one and putting it on The vehicle

I've had this tool for a while myself, and I have never struggled the way you have in this video. I even had a vehicle from Canada that looked like it lived it's life at the bottom of the Atlantic. Here is a tech tip: Support the bottom of the hub/spindle assembly with a jack stand or similar. That will allow the tool to more properly transmit the impact and shock the hub free. Currently you are losing a lot of momentum by having the hub free wheeling like that.
@MrSupernova111
@MrSupernova111 3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. If you want the hub to absorb the full impact it must be as stiff as possible with no play.

I had even removed the entire knuckle and placed it in a 20 ton press and still wouldn't come out. At any rate, I had to buy new knuckles in order to replace my wheel hubs, great huh? After watching you and others use this tool, I got some heavy 2" square tubing and 3/4" plate, and welded a DIY 'aftermarket' copy. Probably a copyright infringement, but if anything it will be good advertising for the company, and I'll never sell it. I'll have to buy the nuts and slot the holes with a torch depending on the car. Can't wait to use it, with a 10 pound sledge, jackstand under knuckle, and a backup press, ha ha.

I had a 2003 Monte Carlo that I tried for 3 solid days to remove a passenger front wheel bearing, driver side was easy. Anyway, that thing whipped me. I luckily lived a half mile from a car service center. I limped the car up there and they got it off. Anyway, that was a few years ago. Just a couple days a go, I removed the two front wheel bearing hubs on my 2004 Durango, originals with almost 225,000 miles. Took me almost five hrs but I purchased a 5 ton gear puller from Harbor Freight. Combine that with PB Blaster and hitting the hub from behind with a hammer while keeping constant pressure on it with the puller, worked. If I didn’t have that 5 ton puller, the wheel hubs would have never came off. 70.00 WELL SPENT!!

I made one of these with my welder and a little time. With the price of raw steel here in Canada you don't save a lot of cash. On my Subaru, the notorious problem of the bearing splitting left the inboard outer race still stuck in the hub. From there you move to an air hammer chisel between remaining bearing mounting plate and the knuckle.

I’ve had one like that on a Chrysler minivan before. It needed a CV shaft as well as a wheel bearing. Since the CV and the WB weren’t coming out with anything we could throw at it we ended up buying a junkyard knuckle and replacing that as well. We have an air over hydraulic press and that wouldn’t even touch the CV shaft in the hub. Sometimes you just replace one extra piece to save a half a day of hammering. Rust sucks. Oh yeah, almost forgot… pro tip: hit it with your purse next time!!! 😉

Good tool I have one but it doesn't work for press in bearings and thats what you had on the last bearing as opposed to the bearing/hub assembly that gets mounted on.
@themechanic6117
@themechanic6117 3 жыл бұрын
No...the last bearing was not a press in bearing. 100% is was a bolt in bearing. I know this because of the bearing design and the fact that i bolted in the new one after cleaning all the corrosion off. I find it funny that some people find it hard to believe corrosion can hold in a wheel bearing

I have been doing this for quite sometime. The energy is being absorbed by other suspension components compromising their life. When working on an older car the other parts could be marginal and this would accelerate deterioration. That car has a lot of aluminum pieces. The front suspension on that car is easily $4000 to replace what he’s hitting. Some times it’s best to remove the spindle

@@themechanic6117 Thanks for the video and your input. I just got one of these to get a rear bearing off my old Hyundai XG350. I doubt it's as tough as that Lexus and its been soaked for days with Deep Creep. All I have on hand is a 4 lb. hammer, but I'll get a proper sledge if needed. I figure it's worth the $90 for the tool to DIY because I'll likely have to do it again. For the support, I was planning on putting the car on a stand and using the floor jack for support. Any reason why I would use a stand instead?

At 8:58 and saying...does he try attaching on two different hub bolts... :) It may sound silly but I’m thinking of getting a pickle jar open, using a knife around all sides tapping to loosen or a stuck bolt out w/ a hammer & chisel. Tapping from all directions to turn the bolt. But in the rust belt things don’t work the same!

1. The tool HAS TO BE in the 12 o'clock position prior to hitting it. In the lower (6 o'clock) position, you have much less leverage against the bearing and all you're doing is shocking the bushings. 2. You have to SOLIDLY support the bottom of the knuckle because: a. Every impact is against the bushings that can/will be damaged. b. The bushings are SOFTENING the hammer blows which is working against bearing removal.

The more videos I check on wheel hub/bearing replacement, the more I want to bring it to my mechanic. Not really hard to do but I am not equipped to handle pieces that are so rusted in you need a press to get it out.. I do touch ups and use grease on nuts and so on to help but rust settles in anyways. I live in eastern Canada and our winters can be harsh on vars especially with all the salt being put on roads (less than before but its still being used)
