This episode is based on South African history. Its about the FNB bank. That tree is also a symbol, logo still used by the bank. The black person photographed where never named by the bank which is even weird as the bank was founded while apartheid was legal. The history is very concealed as the current bank owners are the richest man in the country with investments on other SA🇿🇦 companies exploiting our culture. Their called the Stellenbosch Mafia.

the ghost theme is really interesting. there's the drowned town, the ghost in nando's mansion, the possible ghost of sylvia, the ghost of the venue darius was hunting for, the ghost of the spirit of amelie possessing van, but the most interesting is the metaphorical ghosts of slavery and its conseqences haunting white people in the big payback.

My theory is the levels of the house represents class hierarchy. It's a common view in that US has four classes: Upper, Middle, Working, and Poor. Although they're in Europe, the audience and the group has an American viewpoint; the camera show them intentionally looking at every level. I also theorize that Socks embodies the white guilt that follows, Earn, Paper Boi, and Darius. In the B viewpoint, the tone's color was yellow, which speaks on madness, insecurity, obsession, and naivety. Final note, I think Van might "dead" herself. No one, but Earn, actually notices her behavior, and she mentions, "it's okay" to two people, Earn, and Tupac (before his violent passing). She also left Earn with a literal message pushing those two people in the pool: sink or swim.

There's another creator on here that drew a parallel of Van saying it's ok to both(assumingly) herself n Pac just before ushering his Death. So, maybe not literally, but when she says it's ok both times it's when she holds their hands, and that could signify him giving his soul away for the bag. Earn's hustling and securing his bag but at what cost if he sees the scammer become the scamee, as it were... I was WONDERING about the yellows I knew there was significance but didn't know enough to place it's meaning. Astute👊🏽

@nerdlarge4691 Жыл бұрын
Darius dismissed it because as a Black man he probably experienced much worse racism before and what she did was a light slight. Darius made a racial joke about anime and hip hop at her expense(I don't think she identified herself as Japanese) and kept it moving. Sox and the other White People in the party took the incident as an opportunity to virtue signal and attack a high status Asian and put her in her place(back on the street level, outside of elite circles) as they are prone to do with Buffer groups from time to time ( a la COVID pandemic).

I think entire episode is about Black peoples relationship & options in when dealing with a capitalistic system. Paper Boi wins the game but instead of paying what’s owed, they refuse to acknowledge his success. His response is to destroy everything the system cares about. (Money &status) The artist who chose to accept that the system is rigged & decided to join it. In turn he chose to exist as a side character in the Billionaires world. I think Van leaving was her opting not to play the game at all & the fact that Earn gave in pushed her away faster. Similar to how in society Black Women often see the failures of the system but aren’t taken seriously & deject. Darius got “justice” from liberals (those who live in disgust of the system but prop it up & perform meaningless acts of resistance) within the system. But In the end , he received a “justice” that he didn’t ask for or want (A lynch mob on his behalf). He responds with indifference and carrying on with life. In the end (after writing this long ass comment😂) I think Each black character represents an option for how black people can react to an unjust and rigged system. & Earn represents each of us when encountered with an opportunity to engage with it.

I could be reaching here but I have a few thoughts on the painting of the African lady in the background as Darius and the Asian lady were talking. As a black woman living in Southern California a lot of black prefer non-black women. I suffer discrimination from black men on the regular here. The Asian lady said that she used to live in Los Angeles and she always got hit on by black men. The painting is a black women blending into the background. We are not seen or heard and often times ignored and over looked by our own men for women of other communities. Not to mention we are over looked by the world. It’s as though we do not exist in many spaces.

I have a connecting theroy attached to the ghost of the black man who drowned in the beginning of this season. Remember the beginning of Atlanta Season 1 Episode 1? Earn was describing a dream he had to Vann, and in his description he talked about swimming in an "ocean" and the seaweed looking like hands, and if you touch them they pull you down? That eerily resembles the hands in the lake that were pulling the black man off of the boat in the nightmare scene with White Earn and the black man in the boat on Lake Lanier. Maybe this concept came full circle visually for the audience in this season .... Donald Glover and the rest of the creators of this show are incredible with the writing man, my mind is blowwwwn 😳 Definitely one of my top 5 favorite shows ever.

The lake referenced in episode 1 is Lake Lanier in Georgia. There are many mysterious deaths that occur on the lake which is where the conspiracy discussed in the episode comes from. The assumption is that the former town’s inhabitants are seeking vengeance. With that in mind, I doubt the ghost Fernando saw in the UK was from the underwater town in southern U.S.
@EarlofSedgewick Жыл бұрын
Correct. It is a motif for the season, a recurring image or symbol that develops and informs the theme(s) of the whole piece. Good to make the connection because there's lots of meaning packed into the appearance at the home of an man who inherited his wealth from an apartheid, colonial ancestor, combined with the appearance and discussion of the spirits of the underwater town. What's really interesting is how the show avoids simplicity. The ghosts are neither moral or immoral, there seem to be forces of nature the same way emotions can overwhelm rationality. The ghosts of the lake drag down a black man, seemingly asking if the focus on the past keeps dragging anyone who studies it underwater. But in this episode, there is a pervasive disgust with how progress and success manifest themselves in the business world. Everyone is worried about the guilt of how they became successful, of their image, and so no one is enjoying themselves, even Earn. The only person outside of this seems to be Van. Vanessa moves through the episode unaffected by the behaviours and strangeness of everything. She is not struggling to find anything, not anything struggling against anything. She just is there, observing and being. I'm curious to see how the rest of the season unfolds for her. She seems wise in her detachment, but as someone else commented, she seems to be dead in a way... that she isn't there either. That concern is shown by Earn. I think she kind of represents Love, and that chasing these grand narratives, fortune and justice, Love withers away, isolated and mute. But yeah, we'll see how things unfold.

The title breakdown & your analysis is good, pls don't doubt it. I love finding other ppl doing the research behind the stuff that I recognize w/deeper meaning. The Earn/earnest Hemingway popped out, but I obviously haven't read the book. So I can draw my own arm back to reach too lol. And it all adds up, don't judge me. As well, I had to comment on Socks. Socks definitely foreshadowed for his scene in ep 5, overreaction. He may have been genuine in his feeling of the social cultural misunderstanding he witnessed. But for one, it shouldn't surprise him or give such a strong reaction if he's in tune with even the current struggles of a black man. This was an every day occurence. The more important question is, was he using that as his "in" to hang with Darius and possibly Paperboi? Would the reaction have been as extreme if it were a common bloke on the street corner not even shooting a shot, but getting rejected by a woman of another race in a bad way? It's a real world issue of knowing, or seeing the percentage of genuine care of my life & liberty from someone who isn't living it. I hold it at face value and live on. Something to be aware of

Socks isn’t driving the car it’s London, so he’s on passenger side. The old man Nando has a South African dialect according to the CC for the show.
