I know a couple of people who have been given statins and had serious side effects. My sister was one, she ended up walking with a stick because her legs kept giving way. Her doctor said it was nothing to do with the statins he had recently prescribed. Strange that, when she stopped taking the statins the symptoms stopped. Too many doctors are educated by drugs companies.

Two of my co-workers were on statins. Both are in there 60's. Both complained of muscle pain and weakness, headaches. One said he had "brain fog." Needless to say, once both stopped taking the statins, the problems they had went away.

I was prescribed 40 mg/day of Atorvastatin to treat an elevated cholesterol level. I was asymptomatic at the time and the blood test showed only the elevated cholesterol and a vitamin D deficiency as things out of the ordinary. After about 3 months I started having severe and painful cramps in the calves of both legs with odorous urine that foamed significantly. A subsequent blood test revealed that I was in stage 2 renal failure, to my utter shock. There was no change to my diet or lifestyle during this period, so I could attribute this change in my kidney function to no other cause than the medication I was taking. I immediately stopped the drug and adopted a low saturated fat diet with adequate fiber intake and limited protein and salt. The symptoms did lessen and I am feeling better, but I never went back to the doctor, at the VA clinic, and decided to not pump myself full of drugs and play Russian Roulette with my health. I'm also getting more cardiovascular exercise, which is also helping things out.

mrbigshotfancypants has a very good point: Statistics show that people with heart problems and/or family histories of same benefit tremendously, even with some unpleasant side effects. However, I stopped taking statins and am so glad I did. People not in that situation are shown to benefit very slightly, but still have to deal with those unpleasant side effects. As to the “very slightly“ claim on my part, statistics that counter what I just said cite relative percentage results, not absolute percentage. Research the difference between the two.

High LDL doesn't need to be lowered. Statin is needed only when HDL is lower than transglycerides. Also doctors massively overprescribe, that's why they cause so much misery to their patients unnecessarily. If they think statins will benefit their patients, they should prescribe one tablet per week, or two at most. The cause of cardiovascular heart disease is not saturated fat or LDL but alcohol, sugar and transfats. Patients should be told to stop eating processed carbs and everything with sugar and artificial sweeteners. A natural human diet is what people need, not meds where the painful and even dangerous side effects don't justify the supposed benefits.

This is simply an educational style video outlining why and how you take this medicine, plus side effects to be aware of. I've been on Atorvastatin for months, I was told the main possible side effects and told to stop taking them to contact the surgery immediately if I had severe side effects, which I didn't. In the UK meds have leaflets with detailed info regarding side effects, what is in the drug, contraindications to watch for, what to avoid, who should not take the drug, and so on. The NHS keeps a database of every approved medication, even those available over the counter. Reports of side effects and counterindications are logged, collated and the medicine placed in a list according to reports. Those with multiple reports of midrange-serious side effects are investigated further. This is in addition to the deep, lengthy testing of of drugs and meds by NICE before they are approved for use in the NHS or for sale in pharmacies where appropriate

How do you know you have a genetic predisposition for high cholesterol? Did you take a genetic test to confirm familial hypercholesterolemia? Or you just concluded

Any doctor still pushing statins or thinks cholesterol is a danger should have their license pulled.
@DrODonovan Жыл бұрын
This video is not about pushing statins. It is about providing a clear, unbiased resource for the thousands of people who take them. I am not sponsored, paid for or influenced by big Pharma. Statins have a role in responsible medical management for many people. Whilst there will be cases of unnecessary prescription for many people they are a helpful medication depending on their cardiovascular risk profile.

Was told years ago about the side effects,I can now vouch that they were facts in my case. Muscle ache the worst for me. Going to see how I go over the next few months, was only on 10mg but not happy.

Lipitor Atorvastatin caused pain and discomfort in my ankles, I play golf and could hardly walk after a round, eventuality I stopped taking them, pain disappeared after a few weeks.

I would question any Dr prescribing a drug that has such serious side effects that affect such a large proportion of those taking this particular drug. I asked my Doctor if he would take it, he answered NO!! That tells you everything you need to know about statins. There are alternatives, not as cheap but just as effective. Demand the alternatives.

Been on 10mg for about 6 months. I do find that I have trouble sleeping and suffer constipation since being on them. I drink a fair amount of beer so worry about that with taking statins. Often feel like coming off them just to see if the minor issues go away. Don’t even know my pre and post cholesterol levels.

I was prescribed Atorovastin to lower cholesterol. First, I started off by taking 40 mg dosage, then 20 mg. Even with the lower dosage I developed leg and muscle cramps that hurt badly. I stopped taking this drug and the muscle cramps went away. I understand that muscle cramps are a side effect of these statin drugs. No more statins for me !!

Yes, I'm sure it does. I don't worry if I miss taking it on the odd night.. when I was on Simvastatin 10 years ago I'm sure I had brain fog at least. Asked my Dr one day if I needed to be on them. I'd been in them 4 to 5 years. She said I could come off them for 3 months as an experiment. Sure enough the brain fog lifted within a few days! I turned that 3 months into at least 5 years. As I have always had an MOT annually, they kept an eye on my cholesterol etc. Good doctors surgery. Had a call from their specialist dietitian last November, who found out I had familial hypercholesterolemia, meaning risk is higher for fatalities. I've got to work harder with diet and exercise.

I was on simvastatin for two years. No issues. Then my new doctor switched over to atorvastatin. I’ve noticed a decline in short term memory. It’s really bad some days. I can’t remember what I did a few minutes ago. However, my long term memory is exceptionally strong.

Hi, my mom's doctor double the dosage of atorvastatin (from 20 to 40mg) now she's having headaches, is it normal? What medicine can she take for the headache to go away without having problem in taking it? Thank you very much.
@charlieleonardo Жыл бұрын
Yes, I’m prescribed 40mg atorvastatin daily & I’m experiencing headaches frequently. Towards this, I’m actively carrying out lifestyle changes that will improve my cholesterol & blood lipid profile & accordingly I’ll stop taking this medication under the guidance of my doctor!
