After you mentioned the Spanish population of New Orleans, I thought to myself: "Uh. I knew New Orleans was under Spanish domain for a time, but I don't know for how long. Probably not much, since its influence on the region is rarely mentioned upon. Maybe 5, or even 10 years. Nah, that sounds too much. Let's google it and see how..." *40 years* "... What the hell?!" It's just me, or the Spanish influence on the wider world, and specially in the US and the American continent, rarely gets talked upon? I mean, I have seen a lot of international movies and other type of informative and entertainment works about the historical influence of Italy, France, England and even Germany on the wider world. But about Spain? A lot of academic works, sure. But that's with any country. It's just that for some reason, revolutionary France, medieval England, Renassaince Italy, and such, seem to lure a lot of people interested on the history of these eras and places, or simply see a romantic appeal in them. But Spain? Barely. Heck. Even movies about the Golden Age of Piracy on the Spanish Caribbean... are all about English pirates... fighting the English Navy. Again, on the Spanish Caribbean, who controled all of the area, except for a handful of ports and small islands under English and French domain. I wonder why is that.

If I had to guess, "traditional" history likes to talk about wars, and colonial America just didn't interact with Spain that much in that kind of way. Americans learn about the French & Indian War, French intervention in the Revolutionary War, maybe vaguely about the War of 1812 & the Napoleonic Wars happening at the same time. But Spanish Florida was signed over bloodlessly with a treaty to Britain. Later conflicts & treaties in Texas & the West were with an independent Mexico, not Spain. It's not until the Spanish-American War that American history intersects with the Spanish one - and that is easily forgotten since Cuba had pseudo-independence, and the Philippines were given independence post-WW2. As a fun fact, during the American Revolutionary War, Spain entered the fight against Britain but largely in other theatres. Over in New Granada (modern Colombia), taxes were raised to help pay for a war... unhappy citizenry established an alliance to protest these taxes and rose in revolt against an understaffed colonial administration. Hmm, sounds familiar! (They succeeded in getting a worthless slip of paper signed agreeing to all their demands, and after rallying an army, this agreement was quickly rescinded and the protests scattered.)

First, Spain’s political “control” of large parts of North America often corresponded to relatively little control on the ground. Yes Spain received Louisiana from France for a few decades, but how many Spaniards actually colonized the area? Secondly, this situation was exaggerated in US civics for a long time to support the “empty continent” idea that sought to absolve US colonialism.

If you'd have gone to school in Florida then you'd know that is not the case here. We are well aware of our Spanish heritage. Even the *CURRENT* map of Florida was drawn by the Spanish. Except for Louisiana (parishes) we have the largest physical county sizes East of the Mississippi River. That's because all 67 counties were land-grants from the Spanish king given to reward loyal subjects. Think of being given a chunk of land that large today! Tell me things were not better in the proverbial _'good old days!'_

I don't know about the USA but in Colombia Spain is notably absent in the European history that is taught to us. We talk about Columbus but Spain for us is just studied as our colonial overlord (the official history empashized a couple of conquistadors who were important in the territory of what now is Colombia, the slave trade and the wars of independence). Many of us don't learn about tercios or that the spanish held the Philippines as part of their domain, even events like the spanish civil war are just beggining to gain attention in mainstream colombian historical discourse. I have a theory of why does it happen: First, Spain was for many centuries the biggest enemy of protestantism and an existential threat to both England and the United Provinces so it didn't make sense to portrait Spain as the "good guy" (which they weren't but in the case of Spain is curious how an empire that covered parts of Asia, most of America and not only the Iberian Peninsula but also parts of modern Italy, Germany and Belgium is reduced to the antichrist and popist threat across the sea). Secondly, France, although catholic, resented the Spanish hegemony over the Continent (which France regarded as an affront to her since the french consider their kingdom "the first daughter of the Catholic church"). So it made sensefor them also to push a bad narrative of the spaniards or to downplay their importance. Third, the economical, political and religious project of the Spanish Empire ended in total failure. England's ideas of free trade and industry triumphed over its competing modern project. The defeat of their economical and political systems garanteed that their ideas would be likely forgotten or regarded as a failure in contrast to the political and economical ideas of the British Empire and later the US. Finally, Spain is forgotten in maistream historical narratives because Spain certainly has been in the wrong side of history in many crucial moments, especially since the revolutionary period of the XVIII century. e.g. Spain mantained absolutism until it had to concede a Constitutional Monarchy, fascism won in Spain and the spanish supported the nazis, Franco's endorsment of spanish historical pride affected how spanish patriotism and historical pride were seen by Franco's opponents in Spain and left wing thinkers and politicians in Latin-America. The idea of being proud to be spanish was linked to being trad cat or even a supporter of authoritarian ideas. Spanish pride was weaponized against catalonians and basques who wanted independence and prohispanic politicians in Latin America justified or condoned many military dictatorships all over the continent under the idea that liberal democracy was a foreign and anglo-saxon idea alien to hispanic sensibilities and thus a political system that was undesirable for the Spanish America and Spain which meant endorsing authoritarism with a distinct trad cat flavour.

The irony of the anti-Black insurrection laws in Louisiana is that they made more dangerous Black insurrections more likely by restricting the mobility of Black people. That’s the paradox, freer people are a lower insurrection risk and a risk of less dangerous insurrections.

YOU have helped me change a lot of my opinions and perspectives on the civil war, and I understand a lot more historically about what happened. I am late with this comment but I wanted to say I really enjoyed it. I was reminded of my late grandmother, a career teacher of French creole descent. She often refered to families in New Orleans as being Creole or American, with an almost imperceptible tone of contempt for the latter. Ironically, she married an American, my grandfather, whom I never met as he died before I was born. His family were successful businessmen who came in during the reconstruction years and likely were the embodiment of carpetbaggers. I think maybe her view of "Americans" might have been tainted by her relationship with my grandfather, which I am told was sometimes abusive. Ah, living history. I love the way you present it. Thanks!

I just returned from New Orleans a good few weeks ago. Beautiful city (a small part of me was hoping to just miraculously run into you) We toured almost the entire state too, going to three different plantations (which was my favorite part). The state has a very rich history and I found the divide between the Creoles and the Americans the most interesting part.
