The math has changed for me. I used to crave a newer vehicle to escape "repair costs" on my older vehicles. Now, I have adopted a "cheaper to keep her" attitude. I drove a 33 year old car to work last week. Yes, it requires maintenance, but the prices of those parts are much cheaper than any car payment. My other cars are knocking on the door of being 19 and 23 years old. I just keep them running, and enjoy the savings. Modern car repairs often require expensive "reprogramming and recalibration after replacement". This requires expensive and unique vendor-specific tools to perform that task. This is not the kind of tool you will find in the hands of a shade-tree mechanic. Many car repair shops are forced to specialize to a single brand to keep up with the specialized tools required. Gone are the days when a mom and pop auto shop could fix whatever rolls in. Dare I say dealerships are called "stealerships" for a reason. Their labor rates are insane. When the time comes for me to get a new engine/transmission, it will likely come from a salvage yard, and perhaps get "freshened up", for another 100k+ miles of use. It will cost me less than 6 months of "new car payments". When you have a car that is paid off, you only need to pay for liability insurance too. This is another cost savings. The younger generation has started looking at other avenues of basic transportation. We have seen an explosion in sales of electric bicycles (eBikes) over the past few years. The younger generation is embracing them as a low-cost basic transportation, which requires no annual insurance costs. Their "fuel" (electricity) costs are quite low as well. This trend is likely to continue.

E-bikes are not that inexpensive, a good one will cost $2000 or more, the cheap ones still have $400 batteries and delicate proprietary electronics. Not to mention most bike shops will charge $60 for a flat repair because they are so hard to work on.

@@danwebber9494 Even though I am not young, I have embraced eBikes. I have not had any major maintenance issues. They are simply work-horses with a very low cost per mile of use. Much cheaper than even a Tesla on energy. Ebike parts are much cheaper than a for a car. They don't require many of the parts a car does. There is no radiator, hoses, belts, thermostats, alternator, starter, etc. They cost less per mile of use than a car to maintain. One of my eBikes is a higher performance models which can keep up with city traffic. I DO have liability insurance on it. The insurance only cost 70 bucks a year.

The EPA effectively banned small cars, not outright but in a roundabout way. They tied the mpg to the size of the vehicle. The bigger the vehicle the lower the mpg can be. They then made the mpg for small vehicles so high that auto makers were forced to make vehicles bigger. The government requires more and more "safety" features taking even cheap base models out of the hands of average people let alone the massive $100K trucks. When no one can afford a vehicle people will be limited in their movement and start demanding public transit.

Hi Aubrey. Kudos to you for everything you said. I am a career automotive engineer with 38 years of experience. In decades past, when the economy became recessionary, the car companies always returned to simpler, more affordable, entry-level car offerings. Since 2008, thanks to low interest rates (now going away), car companies kept the cars big and just got more creative with the financing. The result is that Americans owe over $1 trillion dollars on their cars and a projected 1.5million of them will get repossessed in this next year. I drive my small 2009 Ford Focus with a manual transmission. I don't even want a modern electronic transmission. The Focus was designed by Ford of Europe, where they take small car design seriously. In 2008 our government mandated that future cars should be able to get the fuel economy of a motorcycle! Since then, car companies have added ridiculous complication to cars trying in vain to comply with the government. When I go to a junkyard now, I see many cars in there that have good bodies, good chassis and suspension, and often a good engine. They are in the junkyard because the owner could not afford to pay to get the costly systems in the car serviced. The reality is that newer cars are accelerating the consumption of environment by weighing more, then going to the scraper faster than necessary because of poor serviceability, thanks to the crush of government regulations. After decades of OE car experience, my last 7 years were in the automotive aftermarket. I often visited dealer service departments. The service managers often told me they were finding it hard to find service technicians willing to cope with the complicated systems on modern cars. Electronic automatic transmissions and hybrid systems are some of the most costly and difficult to diagnose and service. Cheers, Carl

Ford screwed up the Focus with the dual clutch automatic. They slowly improved the Focus from the time it first came out as a troublesome junker. By 2005 it was a great car other than extreme NVH issues. You could get real world 34 mpg driving on the highway at 75 mph. With that kind of 'fixing' a car that wasn't broken, they just ended up not selling cars.

Only reason I have my 2013 Super Crew is I bought it second-hand from a farmer who only put 19k miles on it. It does its job, but Ford has a problem with things like the raptor, the tremor, the Shelby raptor, the saline raptor, etc. That's what they want to push on lots and I'm sorry but they want exotic car prices for what is an f150 with a body kit. They need to focus on building simple affordable vehicles. Especially if they are going to do things like add turbo and super-charging to the mix to provide power and fuel economy as those require a bit more engineering due to the high pressures and temperatures they operate at.

@@storm14k People buy SUVs and trucks because the automakers make those and price them to be more attractive than smaller cars, because they can still make more money off the attractively-priced SUVs and trucks. You really can’t blame a consumer for buying an SUV or truck when they get way more vehicle and more features in one than in a similar-priced sedan. So, naturally, the SUVs and trucks are what sell better. And now that the “car” companies like Ford and GM and Chrysler have essentially gotten themselves out of the car business, they can keep churning out SUVs and trucks with smaller discounts so they make more money off them. Of course, they are essentially pricing themselves out of the market - regular people can’t afford $60,000 vehicles - but the automakers are notorious for not looking a bit farther down the road to see what’s coming while they’re doing everything they can to rake in massive profits now.

Add in the crash worthiness standards to the over-reaching emissions and fuel economy requirements and you get monster vehicles. The future emission standards are so whacked that the only way to meet them is with EV's....which is why everyone went in that direction. The government said 'Don't worry...we'll give tax incentives and a major PR push to convince everyone that they want the EV's you'll be making'! So billions were invested in the EV's that are selling so slowly (even with the PR and incentives) and the majority of early adopters who bought into the hype have found that they don't work for them and are going back to ICE. But...all those billions invested had to come from somewhere...so major price jacking on the vehicles that still sell. EVERYTHING that's wrong with the whole situation is the GOVERNMENT'S FAULT.

When tuned to factory specifications the 1965 vehicle did just fine without all those mandated contraptions, they were pretty comparable. And you could work on it at home in your driveway without any special tools. Certainly, as we have progressed from carbs to fuel injection there's been some improvements, but one could also argue that these systems have also now made it so people perform even less maintenance than they did back then, and with the complexity to work on them it has become much more costly and complex.

Ford cut off their own hand when they built their last models of Focus and Fiesta cars with an automatic transmission with design and reliability problems. These cars quickly became known as "Do Not Buy" cars because their transmissions needed expensive repairs as frequently as every 20-30k miles. This fact was known during the design and durability stages at Ford but they pushed it through anyway, proving to the normal consumer that Ford can't be trusted to design and build something that would be reliable enough for your wife and daughters to safely drive for 100-200k miles. This is why used Toyotas and Hondas go for thousands more than a comparable Ford; these brands have made a name for themselves for being rock-solid reliable. Ford has had plenty of chances to steer towards excellent reliability goals over the last several decades but seriously dropped the ball here. As a consumer looking for something safe and reliable, I would not even consider a Ford unless they can establish a 10-year record of at least better than average reliability.

I have absolutely no problem with someone being able to buy a large car or truck if they want to. What I have problem with is the fact that you *have* to if no other options exist. The main cause of the problem is actually emissions regulations. It’s understandable that regulations will try to encourage cars to be efficient as possible. And it’s also understandable that larger vehicles not be handicapped with the same mpg requirements as small cars. But the way the laws are written, the handicap essentially works in the opposite direction. As it stands, it is very easy to build large vehicles that meet the requirements. But when you slide the scale back to smaller vehicles, it becomes essentially impossible to meet the current standards unless the car is a hybrid or EV. They are simply unreasonable. By relaxing the mpg requirements on smaller cars, and thus making them available, affordable, etc… enough Americans would choose them that the total gas consumption per capita would actually go down. At the end of the day, the automakers aren’t the main ones who should be in the spotlight: it’s the legislators. They knew exactly what they were doing.

I read that it's 41 mpg for normal cars. That's an easy standard for many car brands. Well, non-American at least. And the reason the standard is relatively weak for big cars, is because of the auto and oil industry lobbyists. Same goes for foreign cars not being easily available. That would destroy their market share. And you don't *_have_* to buy huge and with poor fuel efficiency, there are not-huge American options.

For anyone that does have but wants kids, car seat fitment is a huge issue that isn’t talked about. It’s something I myself didn’t consider until I had kids. The large square door openings on trucks and full sized SUVs is much easier to get infants-toddlers in and out of their car seats than some CUVs and midsize or sub compact sedans. Also most rear facing car seats will push the front seat occupants into the dashboard if you follow the mounting instructions and local laws for how to install them, add in a diaper bag, a stroller, a modest amount of groceries, and find the cargo area in a CUV maxed out.

While waiting for my wife at a parking lot, I noticed our GMC Envoy compared to just everyday cars. The Envoy has a much smaller footprint than anything in the lot. I've pulled small tractors with the Envoy. The moms in the kid go getters were much wider , and bulky. Plus the fact they are useless in loading anything in them , or pulling anything. In 1986 we bought a new 4x4 Chevy 3500 dually. We used that thing to pull backhoe , dozer with. That truck is now tiny , compared to just a half ton truck today. I was able to get one of the last Toyota Tacoma (old man trucks) that sits low to the ground. I was truck patch farming with it. Because it sits low , I can load it with A days worth of watermelons to take to town easily. It'll still pull a mammoth amount of firewood on a trailer. Sure I have older ton trucks for heavy stuff , but we don't need these huge vehicles that are not used for hard work. I stand over 6 foot tall , and have a hard time grabbing stuff from the beds of these new trucks. The old 80s model 3/4 ton trucks will do anything a worker would want , and it's user friendly. I don't begrudge anyone having these huge vehicles , but it just seems like a huge waste.

@@valleyofiron125 Just after thinking more about this video. My grandfather "(Pop)" had an early 70s half ton long bed Chevy. We loaded 63 bails of hay on it regularly. We built sideboards that were easy to install. He would load all the cattle that would it would hold in the bed , and drive them to market. I was around 8 years old when I learned to back a trailer , he never could. So anytime a trailer was involved I went with him 🥴🤣. That truck lasted over 20 years, never had a real washing, was abused by an old man. It had folds on both sides of the rear bed , from where he attempted to back trailers. When he got too old to farm anymore I pulled the worm out 350 engine , and rebuilt it for another truck. We haul the rest of it away. Even tho it was worn completely out , it still drove down the road just fine. Back then a truck didn't cost a years salary , you could buy one , put it to hard work , and not die inside if it got a scratch. It had factory air conditioner that never gave any trouble. Other than needing a starter replacement every few years, it never gave any trouble. Before that he had a 1950 3/4 ton stake bed. He still used it until one day it was parked , and he just forgot about it. The 50 "(The Old Black Truck)" sat under a walnut tree. The acid from the tree rotted it out , or it would still be going today. They built simple vehicles, without a bunch of crap we don't really need , that will fail. I put a starter motor on the 73 Chevrolet in the hay field one time. They were just that simple to fix , "if anything went wrong with them". Those trucks look like toys beside these new Road Hogs. Another vehicle that In hi school is buy is wrecked Corvette Stingrays. I loved doing fiberglass work. They were bone simple to repair. They would outrun the new Corvettes at the time. Women absolutely loved them. That's the real reason a man had a Corvette. I got much more for a fraction of the cost , plus most parts were easy to come by , because GM used a lotta the same parts from all the other divisions back then. I'm ranting like an old man , maybe because I'm an old man😥😂. But back in the day vehicles just made more sense. This new comfort stuff is nice. But I have an easy chair to relax in at home. Those older vehicles had ice cold A/C , and heat that would melt the interior , plus a comfortable seat. You could drive them all day with one finger on the wheel. One more rant about the old vs newer vehicles is tires. We could put all terrain tires on our trucks for near nothing. Being the trucks were lighter they just lasted forever. Our Envoy has 17" wheels. A mid range set cost over $700⁰⁰. We would get 15" or 16" for the 3/4 to one ton trucks for less than $50⁰⁰ back then a piece. Well for now that's enough Old Man ranting 😆

My husband and I are going to take on a few of the repairs to keep the car going but one of those is a timing belt replacement that we cannot do. If that goes, the vehicle is done. A replacement vehicle is not an option because swinging the monthly payments puts my child and their partner out of saving money and into living paycheck to paycheck. To my child, the money saved on fuel, and other auto expenses is best save for a big down payment on a used vehicle someday when their wages improve, but greed will find a way to fix that, as it always does. Something for auto makers to think about while chasing their quarterly sales goals while fighting to keep unions out and wages low. There are 2 reasons for vehicles being the size they are now, and both are directly due to government regulations: 1) side impact regulations require vehicles to be wider to get those extra milliseconds to detect a side impact for the airbags to react to, and 2) CAFE regulations at the current level mean at a smaller footprint the fuel economy requirements would be absurd, so to get to a fuel economy they can meet requires a larger footprint (wheelbase x track). So bottom line, thanks to government regulations the AMC Pacer was way ahead of its time.

So what am I going to do? Skip those extra features id love to get (and pay for) and just get the more basic vehicle.

Yes, those items could be skipped. Add aftermarket heated seat function. Or, pay a few thousand more for the extras. The things you like won't be regretted. If you can afford a 30k+ new vehicle, you can afford a few thousand more.

When I ordered my ‘22 Maverick xl I was super annoyed that I couldn’t put cruise control in. Like come on, it’s already built in the ecu. Slap some 50 cent buttons on the wheel and let me have cruise. But they want me to upgrade to xlt which easily adds 3k more. Nope. I can unlock cruise with forscan and put my own buttons in.

I agree, but also see the manufacturer's side of this. If all options were a la carte the production costs would skyrocket even more. The way they bundle features now is so they can build x amount of cars to one spec, and x amount of cars to another spec. Allowing customer the ability to pick individual features would literally mean custom building every car on the line, which is impractical from a production standpoint.

@@pwrmac7600 Actually the stuff you can customize is pretty long and has caused some trucks to take longer to build (like spray in bedliner). Cruise is now offered in all mavericks regardless of trim. They should have done that from the start.

It's simple numbers. No manufacturer is going to make 100,000 vehicles selling for $10,000 each when they can make 10,000 vehicles selling for $100,000 each.

Unless few people buy one of $100,000. Then it becomes more profitable to make smaller cars with a little less margin.

In 2014 I bought a 2012 Ford Focus Hatchback SE with a transmission with only 16,000 miles on it.The original sticker price was $22,400. I only paid $14,000 for the car. I still have it and I am keeping it. Today's cars are nothing more than data collection devices. Your privacy is gone. You didn't believe "Over the air updates" was for YOUR benefit, did you? Now they can download the data your car collected on you at ANY TIME THEY WANT. They sell your data to a data collection company, and they sell the data to your insurance company, and that time that deer stepped in front of your car, the worker in a work zone looked like he was going to step in front of your car, and the car suddenly backing out of a parking space that almost hit you, and they all caused you to slam on your brakes.....now that makes you look like reckless driver, so your insurance rate gets increased. They know were you went, when, how many times, how many people you took with you, and how many were kids or adults. My car has 172,000 miles on it and still runs like new. I'm going to get some small rust spots fixed and keep this car. When it needs a new engine, it is still cheaper to pay $4,000 for that than $38,000 for a new vehicle.

Remove all these bells and whistles from these vehicles, they are not needed, all they do is run up the price and when they break and they will break they cost a small fortune to repair.

Bring back hatchbacks and wagons PLEASE. Theyre some of the most practical vehicles with the most usable space, SUVs and trucks took over simply by image alone, an old wagon from the early to late 2000s has just as much if not more cargo capacity than a lot of the modern SUVs while also being more aerodynamically efficient and having better handling. SUVs are also much more prone to rolling over with their stupidly high center of gravity. SUVs are kind of the worst vehicle body style for practicality, fuel efficiency, and handling. But nobody buys a vehicle for those reasons anymore, they buy based on how they feel and SUVs make people feel overly confident and "powerful" which im sure is why the worst overall drivers have a tendency to heavily gravitate towards SUVs over anything

If I may be so bold as to add to your comment: Wanting a bigger vehicle for safety because of so many vehicles on the road with aggressive drivers. If you're in a larger vehicle, better chance to (survive / minimal damage) a wreck with and equal sized vehicle. Even if the reason for the accident is caused by a smaller car, larger cars give the feeling of safety for you and your occupants. Now everyone just needs to learn to drive AND learn the rules-of-the-road, but i'll leave that alone here.

People did not buy Ford's small cars (Focus/Fiesta) because the dual clutch transmission reliability, not because of market changes. After the newness wore off, the reliability caught up with them. They knowingly released a car with problems with no permanent fix. Every 20-30k miles you had to argue with your dealer multiple times that you had a problem and they would replace the dual clutch. I liked my Focus. I traded it after the first transmission repair.

Yep, their eCVT in the c-max or Maverick is much more reliable than the trash dual-clutch in the focus. (Which is funny, because it was a Japanese transmission) My cousin had one that broke with just 45k on it.

This is not a manufacturer created problem it is a government created problem. The EPA more specifically regulates fuel economy based upon the SIZE of the vehicle. And they have ridiculous standards that are nearly impossible to meet… so when a manufacturer can’t meet them, they just make the car, or truck, bigger.
@MrMezmerized

41mpg for a normal car is not "ridiculous". Any recent non-American car can (easily) do that. And it's the manufacturers that lobbied for weaker standards for big cars. And they make plenty of money to be able produce smaller cars with smaller profit margins. And if more people buy those, the quantity compensates. But no, people have to keep up with the Joneses
