Several good points well illustrated here. The previous owner stated Stewy was half quarter horse, yet his DNA showed this wasn't the case and people moving along grade horses frequently aren't reliable about a horse's breed or background. The point goes to the advantage of a registered horse if someone has training for a particular discipline in mind. BUT, as stated, a grade horse reduces the risk of heritable health issues, and Stewy is an awesome little dude as are many grade horses with indiscernible parentage. Grade horses are like a box of chocolate. You never know what you're gonna get, but there will be chocolate and chocolate is awesome.

Love what you said about the box of chocolates, which is why I'll take a grade horse any day. That's a good way to describe my little Mustang from now on. When I poked those chocolates looking for one I liked, I found the best one in that box with her.💕

As a teen I bought a 3 year old grade buckskin for $280. She was the only horse I personally owned but she was a true gift. I rode her english, western and side-saddle. We did a little endurance and trail riding. She loved to play in the creeks we crossed. She was always willing to do anything I asked for. I ache for those days again; it was one of the happiest times of my life. I saw her a few years back at the home of the family that had taken her for their daughter while she was undergoing cancer treatment. They kept her until she was given the last act of kindness. She went from a beautiful dappled buckskin filly to a white buckskin mare in her last years. I miss my lovely Honey, she broke the mold as far as I am concerned.

I sang that in a talent competition my freshman year in college, with a little folk group. I remembered that “Stewball” was a corruption of “Skewbald” (vs “Piebald”). So paints with different proportions of light and dark. Which doesn’t apply to your Stewie at all. Just a point of information!

I'm Belgian and I admit I'm always very surprised when I see the U.S. version of a Belgian draught horse. The American version has truly detached itself into a new branch separate from what we have here in Belgium. The resemblance is still there, but they often look like our draught but on steroids or the Hulk version 🤔

The DNA results on mustangs, wildies, and 'grade' mystery horses are among my favorite videos of all, since finding your channel. If only there was a way to test them all, I'm sure the results would shock a lot of people who can't appreciate the value of horses who wind up at auctions. History matters so much, and just imagine all the stories that DNA could tell us. You have such a good eye for finding horses with character, and you have so many interesting horse friends around you; I'm looking forward to seeing the updates on all of them, and can't even pick a favorite. :)

He was the only horse I rode that I would trust in the mountains. He was so sure footed. I miss him no matter what he was. My Morgan gelding reminds me of him. I love Stewie! Very Interesting testing results! Never would have guessed! :-) One little point though: altough many people believe this, draft horses are nothing like the war horses in medieval Europe at all, which where actually quite small and much more like todays Andalusians, Lusitanos etc. They had to be quick, easy to turn on the spot, and of course very brave. Really big draft horses developed much later in the 19th Century for pulling heavy loads. Greetings from Europe!
@jimmyyounger618
@jimmyyounger618 5 ай бұрын
I like the historical note about the huge draft horses coming about later in the 19th Century. My great grandfather and my grandfather, (when my grandfather was a boy), bred Percherons for Midwest farm work, but they also crossed some with good donkeys to produce draft mules. The market for those draft mules was the U.S. Army. They had to be extra stout but not huge. They trained those mules to pull heavy artillery, but those draft mules also had to be agile enough to jump over the tow chains to pull artillery through curves on narrow mountain roads. I think we still have some folks who bred to maintain the original Percheron size because I saw an ad for an "old style Percheron" at 15.2 hands instead of the 17-18 hand draft horses we see now.

In medieval times, small horses were used for travelling and for womenfolk, and most were gaited (more comfortable) quite similar to the Norwegian pony. but Medieval war horses were big with a lots of bone. A typical medieval armour was twice the weight of the rider, and some horses were also armoured ! Those horses needed to be very strong and full of stamina and they were not very agile (due to the weight they carried) They would mainly be used to charge and crush foot soldiers. Bones are often found during castle restorations .

I've been watching draft horses a lot lately and I was thinking his butt and back legs looked like the shape of a draft horse of some sort, but it was way too small, but then when you lifted his feet and I saw his hooves, I again thought, there has to be some kind of draft horse in there. All mustangs are a mix of breeds. The "breed" developed as America pushed west, and various horses escaped or were released into the wild. That's why they vary so much - there's even draft-horse like mustangs and mustangs that look like Appaloosas. There's a few that are even gaited. Like that other comment said - a mustang is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're going to get....

since mustang wasn't a listed breed and the traits he has come from spanish breeds and he was originally in texas - this result screams mustang to me. it's important to remember that these tests look at genetic markers of full ancestry and does not reveal exactly what the parents were - the parents were likely both mixed breeds as well with a varied history

I'm not sure when or how I came across your channel. But I was hooked by this raw video making. Nothing is staged, just recording a daily life, the hard work, and this passion for horses, especially those who lost trust in this cruel two legged animal called humans. I never had any relations to horses, but I always admired the draft horses. There are some videos when trees have removed out of the forest, where no machinery can work. Their size and pure power get me goose bumps when ever I saw it. Stewy is my favourite horse because of his nature, robust stature, and elegance when he gallops around. And now even more since you know, he has a draft in his line. Anyway, I'm really enjoying your videos, and always blown away, what you achieve, as a single person. It's a bit frustrating for an easy-going guy who is mostly good at procrastinating. 😁It also reminds me, think twice, let the crowbar aside, and give it time to evolve. All the best for your future, don't forget watch your self (backache), it doesn't help when lying flat for some time. Cross my fingers for you.🤞🙂🤟

Lol, I love Stewie so much. What a cool mix of ancestors for him. It was fascinating to learn about his genetics and all the different breeds and their history. Thanks again for another great video!

Since he isn’t bred the way you thought what are you going to train him to do and what did you have in mind before the dna test he is really cute and I like his build he might be small but looks powerful

I didn’t see those breeds at all! Yet I like a smaller horse. Keep us all in the loop on his evolution as a riding horse!

Spanish. Barb. I see these traits. These ancient breeds are small, sturdy horses. Feet are rock hard.

Hooray for Stewy! Another diamond in the rough! It will be such fun to see how he comes along and what discipline/s he excels in. He may make an incredible cart horse.
