As promised, I'm finally posting part one of many of the work I've done to George the Audi! In this episode I'm changing the rear brakes and extracting a pretty badly rounded pad carrier bolt. This is when spirits were still high and I had no idea of what lay ahead of me...
Time stamps:
0:00 - Intro
0:45 - Work done so far
3:58 - Stripping the brakes
9:33 - Attempting to extract the rounded bolt
11:32 - Bolt is moving!
15:06 - Bolt is out!
16:02 - Removing brake disc
16:18 - Outro

Sometimes it's more satisfying when you have to deal with an issue and successfully resolve it.

That feeling when that stubborn bolt finally comes free,usually with a massive crack noise and "yes you ba57ard"

The amount of times I've convinced myself to buy that "special tool" and then end up winning with brute force. Good job 😀

Great video. All who work on older cars themselves have faced the same problems. Looking forward to Part 2, even if it does go "horribly wrong"

Superb video Katie. It is satisfying when you finally get that seized bolt/nut undone on a job that should have taken 1hr actually took 3!

Done front brakes on my Volvo yesterday but doing the rear with my dad over the weekend. Gone for Brembo discs and EBC Redstuff pads

Probably a good call replacing the caliper. Save time on the rebuild and probably not all that much more expensive. Can't imagine changing disc on only one side. 🤔 If you would like to compare notes on using external microphone Katie feel free to drop me a message.

I do enjoy watching how someone who knows what they're doing does a job I've done before and I learn all of the ways I went wrong! With that allen bolt I might have tried tack welding a hex nut or sacrificed an allen or other "bit" to weld on and hoped the welding heat helped shift it.

got exactly the same rounded bolt issue on my Lupo so have put off doing a similar brakes job until I watched you do it! :)

For all bolts, especially kaputed hex key screws, Irwin bolt extractors. Not cheap , but thoroughly recommended. I bought my own after trying some cheaper, inefective brand.

Had to do front discs and pads on my Golf recently, but luckily nothing was too crusty. Loved the Muzak! Could you do a bit of a toolbox tour? Maybe look at some of the techniques you use when you're working on stuff?

I have thought about something like a toolbox tour, but then I feel I'd be giving any possible thieves who might find out where I am a guided tour of what to take! 😆 Will definitely be showing off some techniques though!

First video clearly showing the parts I’m having an issue with, this gave me so much hope. Do you have any idea where I can find those bolts today? Also, if you had to do this again would you do anything different to make it quicker/easier?

Believe it or not, a stud extractor works really well on those cap screws ( allen bolts)

No penetrating fluid and or heat before using brute force?
@WrenchingWench
@WrenchingWench Жыл бұрын
No point using any fluid because I couldn't get to the threads, and the bolt moved pretty easily once I hit it!

How did you decide to start repairing cars yourself?
@WrenchingWench

My dad always repaired his own stuff when I was a kid and I used to always help out, and it kind of spiralled there to be honest! It’s now my job and I know more about fixing cars than he does, haha.
