No doubt the DFAM is limited, but it sounds *so* good when it's in its wheelhouse. With a little extra modular gear you can break out of the 8 step sequencer, so it feels like the DFAM is really just meant to be paired with the other Moog semi-modular modules.

The built in sequencer is extremely similar with pitch and velocity adjustable per note, but it's expandable beyond 8 notes and supports odd signatures. So... it's a drummer that: - has only one limb (and it doesn't appear to be neither arm nor leg), - hits *exactly* on time -- but it's not *your* time, - has memory capacity to strike that drum exactly eight times before looping right back, but... ... can strike these drums in really incredible ways that produce amazing sound as long you spend time to tell it *exactly* how to do it before each performance. You can always use external cv sources. If you have modular rack, I’d assume you have a bunch of nice LFO’s and at least one sequencer. You can use korg sq-1 an voila! - 16 steps to your command. Cheap Keystep - 32 steps, as I remember. Yes, DFAM is a bit limited on its own (like most of synths), but with little external help it’s capabilities are limitless
@VestedUTuber4 ай бұрын
Honestly, 8 steps on the built-in sequencer is only really limiting if you don't pair it with an external CV capable sequencer (or a MIDI sequencer + the Sonoclast 2HP MIDI adapter), or even just something that has a CV Trigger Out like a TR-8S. Early on before I got a BSP, one thing I did with my Mother-32 to synch it to my TR-8S was use the TR-8S's trigger out to manually step the sequencer on the Mother-32. You can do something similar with the DFAM.

I’ve been tempted by the DFAM in the past, and I’m sure I’d have fun with it. It’s one of those things that’s definitely not “bad”, but has a very specific use case that doesn’t work for most people’s needs, and in that case it really shines, as your demos show. The one thing that seems a major omission is not MIDI, since it’s mostly designed for live tweaking, but a reset/sync input. In the end, I found I could do most of what I liked about it with a couple of modules I already had, so I couldn’t justify the space, but it still has a unique sound and workflow that sets it apart.

Definitely type A here. The DFAM was the first (semi-) modular piece of gear that I kept. I read a lot in the comments that the Mother32 is THE companion for the DFAM. Even though that is kind of true and is what the manufacturer intended, my recommendation for the best partner would be the Elektron Oktatrack (with a Korg sq10 for sync and quantized melodies). It’s an instant fun combination especially if you’re into harsher types of techno. Just dial in an awesome patch/loop on the dfam, bounce it into the octa, remove all cables on the dfam, rinse and repeat until you have a solid base for a new track, chop the loops and rearrange them on the octa… super small fun and travel setup :)

I never really understood what was happening and how I got it to make all the weird and amazing sounds that came out of it. it was a totally different experience from the 2. gen electribes I wqas used to . I remember the manual was a classic Roland manual. It just made everything more confusing for a young synth novice in his late teens. All the weed i was smoking back then probably didn't help either. After following your channel for some months now and seing you take on several pieces of the good old gear me and my mates went through in our search for fun and good gear to play with, has really been a fun trip down memory lane for me. You inspired me to go out and buy a used Korg KP3 again, just because it's a really fun sampler to use. I'm looking forward to keep on following you further down the rabbit hole of "bad gear", and see how you make all the things "shine" just as bright as a piece of late 90's/early 00's piece of gear possibly can. Thank you for all the work you put into making theese videos. they really do brighten up my fridays. have a nice weekend. Already looking forward to the next one.

LOL, I made it to the end. Yes, I have one. 😂 Personally, the DFAM is my all time favorite piece of kit I have ever owned. I mostly use it with my Beatstep Pro, TR-8, and some other synth. The DFAM always makes me smile.

The DFAM is a beast, but if people buy it and expect a drum machine, they will be disappointed. It shines if you can layer a bunch of it in a DAW or if you JUST need a single layer of percussion.

Probably one of my favorite pieces of gear I own, but it’s totally limited. Needless to say it’s amazing sounding for some live jams and sampling. The Edge is gonna be fun to test drive and hear the comparisons. Glad I already purchased it and recovered from the financial setback of this purchase a few years back. Always wanted two of them at the same time, but the Subharmonicon ended that desire. I have yet to take the plunge on the Subharm!

I loved the definition for "eurorack" :D Speaking of which: You haven't talked a lot about the many patch points.. Are these only useful in combination with other modular gear or can you patch crazy stuff on the DFAM alone?

The patch points totally make sense when using the DFAM on its own but the video would have lasted for 2h then;)

I was always fascinated, and slightly scared of the DFAM. I suspected it was too rich for my synth newbie blood and those suspicions seem to be confirmed by this video. Going to chalk it up with the rest of the “if I win the lotto” gear. Seems like it has an amazing range of audio potential, but you basically need a second mortgage to extract it in a useable way.

It's a great sample source tho

@@AudioPilz that was my initial thought watching the video, quickly followed by “but also, so are those springy things that stop doors damaging the paintwork” and I could buy a whole load of the springy things and a sampler and still afford my rent vs the DFAM. But for real, though. I would love to try a DFAM, or have one as part of an ‘Andrew Huang’ scale modular set up. As for right now, I’m still very much in love with my Roland TR-6S

Finally got my hands on that new and improved model, and it definitely fills a gap in my setup. Its a bit like doing analog sound design for rhythm rather than melody.

Here's my main takeaway from these videos. Anything sounds good and is usable if you hook up a bunch of other gear to it.

I mean, in the case of the DFAM or really _any_ Moog synth except maybe the Minimoog, that's kind of the point. They're not meant to be used on their own. Problem is they're also expensive and a fully kitted out all-Moog setup is going to cost thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars depending on what you're doing.
@ghostinplainsight48032 жыл бұрын
I bought mine second hand without the patch notes. It took me about 2 weeks to even make a kick out of it. I love it! If you have one get a MAFD (Midi Adapter for DFAM) you can play the notes in any order allowing you to play polyrhythms. I will definitely be buying an Edge when it comes out though, being able to have pseudo presets through midi is just too tempting.

Group B here! I was gifted a Crave, which turns out to be a major gateway drug leading straight to the Behringer System 100 eurorack modules and the Edge, when it comes out. Modular suddenly seems a bit more of a realistic option. Not only thanks to Behringer, but also brands like Doepfer producing very reasonably priced modules.

I used to have the DFAM & Mother-32 in a tower, but just couldn't personally seem to get enough out of them for the desk space ... with the DFAM in particular I just didn't seem to be able to get it to make the noises I wanted/needed. So I part-exchanged for a Hydrasynth recently, and whilst that obviously isn't a 1-1 swap in terms of features it seemed like a good deal for usability. However, I guess I have the combo to "thank" for otherwise pushing me into the rabbit hole of modular as I started to get into Eurorack shortly after initially getting the tower ... Anyhow, another fine episode!
