I was there, sitting at the Senna chicane as a 6 year old, in absolute awe at the variety of cars - the Panoz to this day is one of the loudest racing cars I have ever heard. The event itself was fantastic, just a massive shame it was only held once.

My uncle was there too. He called us at home on the Gold Coast to say happy new year, and dad passed the phone around so that we could each hear the cars in the background. I wish the event could have continued. It was so unique.

Was one of the best races I ever went to! Had gold seats on the start finish line. Kept all the merchandise I bought and still have tinnitus from the Judd engines coz man they were the loudest thing I’d heard on that track and I attended every F1 GP. Don Panoz had an office in Adelaide and was planning to build his race cars here. Great memories.

I live in Adelaide. The race had no local TV coverage in Australia, was pitifully advertised, and despite what this video says, the attendance was low. By comparison, the last F1GP in Adelaide had 500,000 people over the weekend. It was also a totally daft time to run a motor race. If it was run in November or March, it would have been better. Who is going to give up family New Year to attend a motor race? Only a dedicated petrol-head, not the families that the F1GP and V8 Supercars fostered.

It's really a shame that the concept of racing through New Year's Eve has never been visited again yet even until today.

I was a flag marshal at Flag Point #7, where the Audi went into the wall at the 5:15 mark. The Audi ran along the wall and stopped before Turn #8. He sat there for a short time then, as mentioned, continued. Many of us were appalled when we found out that wasn't going to be another one! There was a mixture of the V8 Supercars not wanting the event to continue and South Australian Government miss handling of it too. I believe Don Panoz got so pissed off with all of it he withdrew any chance of it happening again. He also withdrew building a factory in Adelaide building Panoz sports cars. Very disappointing for a lot of people.

I know right. They just had to make it a 1000km race. Which come to think of it is kinda funny since a bunch of americans mainly organized it. And they're used to miles.

Stijn. I loved this little footnote in great raccing history, and as an Austrlian I didn't aactually know about this event. I turned 12 in the year 2000. and didn't get into racing until I was 14, and was hard into WRC. looking at greats like Tommi, and Colin McRae. anyway. I believe that the Australian manufaturers were too proud about their machinery to share the trackks wirth the FIA nd all that cme with that. litttle did they knoow that within decade their manufacturing would sadly disolve into Germany, and the USA, and Asia. a very sad outcome from one of the most can do people, because of govenment regulations, and misalignment of peoples wishes. anyway. the Bathurst 12hr became something beauiful, out of the chrisalis of ustralian motor racing. i just wish we got more excited about other things tooo,. like we have a cool drift league. check that out. and drag racing. and burn outs...summernats will blow your mind.

Which is interesting to consider, when they went on to run their own international events in New Zealand, China, Bahrain and a support gig at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix one year -- and also organise the Bathurst 12-Hour these days.

I read it was economy, that scuddled the plans for a Asia Le Mans series.. venues were concerned that it wouldn't produce enough audience Edit*- Which is rubbish, if you ask me. It would maybe not at the first season, but as it picks up popularity it becomes viable

'The Race of a 1000 Yawns' - Awful race on TV and one I feel bad for anyone that actually paid admission. The series was well decided by that point and this was effectively a 6 hour demonstration run as the "LMS" brand tried to expand into both Europe and Asia/Pacific with steadily dwindling car counts and variety. Take off the rose coloured glasses and you will see that this race was really an early sign of endemic problems in the series and in many ways the beginning of the end.
