The bins thing started in North Sydney while Ted Mack was mayor. They figured out that most of the litter in the streets was actually stuff that people had put into bins and that had then fallen out, blown out, or been pulled out by scavenging birds &c. That is, they noticed that putting litter in the bin was not effective at keeping it off the street. So North Sydney Council took away the bins, and litter was much diminished. It turns out that once you have a population broadly inclined not to throw rubbish directly on the ground, it works better to have them take it away than to have them put it in a bin that it will likely come out of. As for why Australians are inclined not to litter, much credit must go to the non-profit organisation Clean Up Australia, founded by Ian Kiernan and Kim McKay in 1969. Clean Up Australia has been peppering Australian TV with anti-littering ad campaigns ("Do The Right Thing", "Keep Australia Beautiful", "Clean Up Australia"), organising "Tidy Towns" competitions, and organising volunteer "Clean Up" days for over fifty years, and the result has been a very noticeable change in social mores. When I was a nipper Australians thought nothing of leaving a scatter of rubbish at a picnic site, or throwing tins, wrappers, and cigarette-butts out the windows of their cars. That's not the done thing here any more.

Generally speaking if it’s a Catholic systemic school it isn’t considered private. Fully private schools in Australia are upwards of $15,000 and they aren’t part of the Catholic systemic funding scheme. My daughter went to Loreto Normanhurst which is a fully private Catholic school (not Catholic systemic) and the fees were around $28,000 a year. This is typical of private schools in Australia. A systemic Catholic school on the other hand is about $4,000-6,000 as these are funded by the Church and are not considered private schools but rather defined as Catholic systemic schools.

There are a great variety of different types of schools in Victoria, Australia. The 'private' ones are partially funded by the federal Government. My grandchildren are in Government /'public' secondary schools in Queensland and Victoria in their high ability streams. Previously, one was in a small, reasonably low-cost private school with an entrepreneurial bias in Victoria.
@RJS42874 ай бұрын
Just a footnote. "Private Schools" in Australia are cheaper because unlike the UK they also receive public or Government funding. The Roman Catholic Church had always run large numbers of schools and had always argued for public funding as they reduced demand on the state system. They finally won post WW2. But having partially funded Catholic Schools, state Governments were obliged to fund other religious groups schools not just Christian of all varieties but also Jewish and Islamic. Some "systemic" private schools are quite inexpensive with fees of under $8K. But there are also some elite private, often boarding schools, known as GPS (Greater Public Schools) which can be well over $50K - include St Joseph's in Queensland, Scots College and the Armidale School in NSW plus many more. With their boaters etc they often imitate UK private schools. One final note. Despite this in NSW the most academically successful schools in NSW are the limited number of state selectives. You have to take a tough selection test to get in (echoes of the 11 plus). Best known are James Ruse, North Sydney Girls. Sydney boys High, Baulkham Hills High. Many parents spend a lot on coaching colleges to get their kids prepared for the test.

I think you’re confusing private schools with Catholic systemic. Catholic systemic schools (about 5K a year) are not defined as private in the Australian education system. Private schools are usually 15K to 40K a year. In Australia we have public schools, Catholic systemic, private schools and independent schools.

@@TheGreatEmigrateThat was incorrect/misleading advice from @Ragnar5000. In all of NSW including Sydney, cars parallel-parked must be parked so that they are facing in the same direction as the flow of traffic on that side of the road. If angle parking is permitted or is a requirement, that will be stated on parking signs for that locality. Those signs will often (usually?, always?) require parking either “rear-to-kerb” or “front-to-kerb” and often will specify the angle required, e.g. 45 or 90 degrees. You must park whichever way will be in compliance with the instruction on the sign or on the road markings for that location. There is no free-for-all although in marked 90 degree parking spaces without a specified end-to-kerb requirement, the end-to-kerb is optional but the rear-to-kerb method will be safer. So for any other situation (parallel or angle), the front of the vehicle always must face largely in the direction of traffic in NSW.

I have not seen reverse angle street parking in Victoria but I have seen it in NSW. The narrow streets in my husbands birth city in the north of England where there are streets of houses built more than 50 years old without allowance for off street parking were bumper to bumper with car parked willy nilly, fully on footpaths, half on footpaths, and facing us on the left hand side of the road. My husband who migrated to Australian as a young man in the 1960’s finds it very strange whenever we go for a visit and as he never owned a car when he lived there as a young man, he (being nearly 80 now) found the gyratories nerve wracking last year.

@@TheGreatEmigrate if you make it to Melbourne and hire a car and drive in the CBD you will see right hand hook turns. Because of the trams, it’s too dangerous to enter the intersection and do a right hand turn in front of them, so you have to be in the far left lane, enter the intersection and park parallel with the pedestrian crossing and wait for the signal to do your right hand turn. It feels strange the first time or two to be parked there with traffic on the other side of the pedestrian crossing aimed at your passenger side door, but they are stopped until you complete your right hand turn. Basically the pedestrians, trams and traffic in the right hand lane travel through the intersection at the same time parallel to each other so no chance of a collision or pedestrian getting injured. You do your right hand turn with the signal then traffic paused on your left gets their signal to follow you through the intersection while everyone else is stopped. Sounds complicated but it saves coming to grief with a humongous tram and there are signs prior to the intersection warning you about the necessity to make the right hand hook turn from the left.
