Rivnuts are stronger than threading the tube. They'll fix the stripped thread. Also the gas struts should be installed the other way, with the gas cylinder to the top when closed.

Exactly what I was about to post 👍 Change them all to Rivnuts, there’s not enough meat in your box tube for a thread, they will eventually fail
@swbpajlife Жыл бұрын
If the "taps" end up stripping out, your best bet would be to riv nut them, they'll hold for ever. Making good progress and that your taking risks of doing it yourself, but this is how we learn that we CAN do this stuff easily 🤘😁🤘

It's funny, just as I wrote about rivnutting the holes, instead of threading them, as soon as I posted the comment, you stripped 1 🤣 But yes, best fix would be to use a rivnut 👍
@andrewshepley7751 Жыл бұрын
Rivnut or drill a hole on the opposite side bigger then you need so you can fit w socket in and use the supplier nut

Thanks Steve. Looking forward to the next installment already. Cheers

Use a Ribnut to fix your stripped treaded hole issue, buy a kit from bunnings and you may want to swap them all out as rhs is thinned walled and threads will stripout over time. Struts are upside down you use the gas end as the stabilised end and the shaft pushes out. Looking good though.

Defo props to you on building your own camper. I looked into it, did the sums vs time to build and was cheaper just to buy a camper trailer. Never gonna stop dust haha.
@Australian4x4Adventures Жыл бұрын
For what I’m building I could find anything for what this will cost me. If I just wanted a tent on wheels then yeah but this is way more then that. Haha yeah I know I’ll never stop all the dust

Hey Steve, dumb question, what's that hinge stuff called, does it have a specific name, thanks bud. Just a heads up too mate, when you're setting up things in the camper, mount a fan inside so when you're driving on dirt roads, the fan going all the time it pressurizes the inside of the camper enough to keep the dust out, and yes it does work I've done it many, many times. Great job mate. Seeya Rob

Rivet nuts are your friend Steve. Available at Bunnings in the tool section mate
@WesternAustraliaNowAndThen Жыл бұрын
Every gas strut I have ever seen has the piston pointing down and there are installation guides that say that is the correct way to fit them so the advice must be correct. From what I can gather, there is a small amount of oil that helps the seal do its job and turning the strut upside down will allow the oil to run to the wrong end and the seal will dry out.
@sjfno1 Жыл бұрын
Use Rivet nuts. They will be stronger than the bit of wall thickness in your square tube. Bunnings or Amazon will stock them.
@MKMTA Жыл бұрын
Hay Steve, if you don't want to weld it & retap it, try to see if you can get a nut insert (Rivet nuts). Drill it out & add the nut inserts in. they will also be stronger than tappin the frame directly.

@brooksy2093 Жыл бұрын
Just drill out hole to suit a nutsert/rivnut to suit thread on strut. I would have actually done that with all strut holes as the thickness of the box is too small a thread length & will pivot over time with strut tension & flog out and grease anyway. Easy peezy

Nutserts, great invention, there cheap and just work in thin metal. Are you insulating the roof & walls? Put the wiring in before you get too far along. You could run wiring in the tube supports as this will protect it.
@KuueeCampsites Жыл бұрын
It's to do with lubricating the seal. If you left hem the original way the seal can dry out. The new way the seal has oil on it most of the time.

So... compression latches although seem to be great, don't expect it to be secure when locked. Companies purchase/sell these in large quantities meaning there are a lot of keys out there the same! I found this out the hard way when I found my wonderfull gull wing doors on my vehicle could be accessed with NO signs of break in! Insurance company loved that...

Definitely leave the gas struts the way they are. They're like shock absorbers. Gas chamber should be on the bottom. I installed this sort of stuff as a job for years
