At least in Germany we do have a nickname for Austrians, we call them "Ösis" (short for "Österreicher")

Sadly Hadey Lamar's invention is, these day, judged a bit too favorably. What she invented (with the help of an engineer who did the actual work based on her idea) was a *mechanism* for frequency hopping for controlling torpedoes. But frequency-hopping itself was invented earlier, her mechanism was never used, probably wouldn't have worked well, and torpedoes weren't radio-controlled anyway (and still aren't since radio waves don't propagate well in water - they use long thin cables). The only reason we know about this today is because patent filings are obligated to mention related, prior patents, so once she submitted hers, it's there forever as prior work even if it's form something that isn't actually based on her patent.

I would say that's true for some of the other guests, but in this case the guest kind of sucked. He had like a 5 second delay and wtf is up with him taking a phone call in the middle of the podcast? Fuckin' seriously? This guy sucked.

About "The Sound of music": it's not like we (Austrians and Germans) go out of our way not to watch it. We absolutely have, for the most part, no clue of its existence. It's truly just unknown.

We got our freedom so much earlier than germany because of the pledge to neutrality. Therefore the soviets got a somewhat nonmilitary buffer zone between them and the west. Thats why they insisted on our neutrality, but also why the other 3 were ok with it. And thats also what made the biggest benefits for us in the cold war. We were the playground of diplomats and negotiators.
