"Famed author Salman Rushdie, who has endured death threats from extremists for decades, was stabbed Friday before a scheduled lecture in western New York, authorities said.
A man stormed the stage at the Chautauqua Institution, about 70 miles south of Buffalo, at about 11 a.m. and attacked the 75-year-old Rushdie and interviewer Henry Reese, New York State Police Maj. Eugene J. Staniszewski said.
Rushdie is best known for “The Satanic Verses,” which has been banned in Iran and is considered by some Muslims to be blasphemous.
The author was stabbed at least once in his neck and abdomen, Staniszewski said at a news conference. He was "still undergoing surgery" in Erie, Pennsylvania, as the major spoke."

This is something I often bring up with "liberal" and "progressive" Christians, I believe they believe they mean well, but really they are the ones that "pick and choose" what their Bible says and largely live on their own set of morals and not what is written in the Bible because it what's makes them feel good. I remember when the bounty was put on Salman Rushdie for writing "Satanic Verses." Because I'm against cancel culture, I bought the book. I hate to say it but I found it unreadable. I tried. I couldn't get past a few chapters. It was terrible! But I still displayed it proudly on my bookshelf.

I agree with you on that. I own it as well and tried to read it but found it hard to understand. I didn't get a lot of the symbolism in the book. I felt the same way about his other book "Midnight's Children". One day I will go back a read them, or at least try to. I certainly hope he recovers although it sounds like it will be a long road to recovery. I wish him all the best.

As a liberal, one of the most disappointing things for me about this whole episode is how reluctant anyone on the left is to call out this blatant act of violence. Bernie, AOC, Ilhan Omar, none of them so much as put out a tweet condemning the violence. Chuck Schumer did though. Joe Biden did. Boris frickin Johnson did. The left needs to grow a backbone when it comes to relgious fundamentalism. If we call out violence/misogyny from christians, we've got to do the same for islam, no exceptions.

Salman Rushdie was an EX Muslim. And Ayatollah Khomeini doesn't represent Iranian people. Most Iranian Persians are not Muslims by choice. Islam was imposed on Persian Iranians by Arab Muslims in the 6th century. Today the Iranian Persians are one of the most irreligious people in the world. Those who live in Iran are controlled by NON Iranian Ayatollahs who hate Iranian culture, tradition, names and history. Iranians were originally Zoroastrians. Cyrus the great the Persian Iranian king came up with the first human rights law known as the Cyrus Cylinder in 550 b.c. which was unprecedented at that time. Most Iranians are very accepting of other faiths and cultures.
