Hey Adam and Holy…..not had the opportunity to watch many of your videos lately as been very busy but this video is very informative and interesting. Medication is definitely trial and error but eventually you will find the magic formula that will give the necessary balance to Ezra’s world. Sometimes I kinda bet you wish you were able to spend one day as Ezra to get his perspective of the world but geez, you are doing such great things for him and Simon. They are very lucky to have you as parents. Their siblings are of course lucky also but what stands out is how they interact with Ezra and Simon. It’s very special.

One of my family members can't speak and does repetitive sounds or pauses and replays videos repeatedly, he also runs against a wall and back to a bed or chair repeatedly without harming himself, there are times where he attempts to do what I can describe as communicating with others when he needs something or what's to say something but his sentences are still impossible to understand and only understanding through hand hand motions like pointing or body language. So far it's still a little bit of a struggle to get help and doctors only "suspect" autism but coming across your videos was really an eye opener. Its definitely comforting finding people who may understand and relate to good times and tough times that comes with it wishing you and your family the absolute best in life ❤️

I am a new subscriber. I have 4 children, the 2 youngest are on the spectrum. Our 5yr old is very high functioning(high intelligence in many areas) but struggles with some basic things. The youngest(almost 4) is non verbal & struggles with alot more. Going anywhere is hard, he has to go in a stroller that barely fits is size(he is extremely tall). He doesn't mind his shoes thankfully BUT has to touch the ground constantly while we walk so he has to go in a stroller. We haven't done meds yet, not against them, they just have not been brought up to us, though for my 4yr old I think I need to bring up adhd meds(he has been diagnosed with that along with the autism) I have always said the lack of ability to focus long enough is hindering him, aside from the autism. I appreciate your "real life" videos! It truly makes me feel less alone. Your son did soooo well! I hope the new meds help him better.

Hi, I had commented weeks ago, but can't find my original comment. So, I hope it's ok to comment here. First thank you again so much for sharing yalls family story so much. It was the first thing that actually clicked for me and helped bring me some peace while we waited for my son to be tested. My son will be 4 years old next month and today we were finally told, yes he does have autism. He does not fit the typical signs of autism when I try to do research. He loves to hug and cuddle. He is a people person. But, he has hand flapping, and lining up toys, sensory issues and other differences that stand out. At his appointment today, all I was told, was yes he has it. But, that we will go over what level and resources and what it means at his next appointment in three weeks. This has been such a long drawn out process. As much as I finally feel relief, I'm also frustrated. Trying to tell family that yes he was diagnosed with it, but now everyone wants to know. Well what next? What does this mean for him for school and what things will he need that are different from normal kids. How much is really different, and how much is still the same? I was wondering if you get time. I would love to know how your family handled it when you told them about your children's diagnosis and needs? As far as parents and grandparents go. For my family, my parents don't know what autism is. I've struggled to explain it to them. And my dad's response of 'oh well he will grow out of it'; really left me feeling great how do I explain this to him. I think as much as I feel relieved to finally be getting some answers, I'm also still overwhelmed. What's next, what do we do now. And I will probably have some more of those answers next appointment. But, if you have any advice that would be helpful, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again for everything.

kudos Holly and Adam!!!! Ezra’s behavior is relatable and understandable. Your making lemonade out of lemons 🍋 including the frustrating parts. We do what we love for the people we love and care about. Medication 💊: I have epilepsy and luckily the doctors have me on the right dosages. Even though its higher and comes with more side affects (Similar to Ezra’s), its worth it not to have a seizure. I have had my share of spills/tumbles, no fun. Medication is important and suppresses and reduces the challenge. Wouldn’t be here today without it. Look at the after medication compared to before. What a difference.

My son always had issues metabolizing meds. They wore off to quickly and he would get angry, frustrated and would smash toys. Then he would get upset later for having smashed the toys. It’s an awful cycle. ❤

Be very careful with the dosing.. the doctor will prescribe a normal dose but try less is more. It’s difficult but that medicine makes them hyper focus once the adhd is being taken care of with the meds. My 8 year old with adhd and autism has been advancing tremendously with medication he is finally in 1st grade when he should be in 3rd grade this year.

I went through almost a dozen antidepressants until i found the right one. This was before I was diagnosed with autism so that has a lot to do with it. I also take Risperidone for autism. Its a shame you have to give meds to a kid that young, but I understand how difficult it can be to help him. Wish Ezra good luck!

I was put on Risperidone when they discovered I had Autism (I have Asperger, or high functioning Autism), for me, it was like I was now a zombie without any emotions or even any reactions from anything, I was like drugged like a drug addict, I almost got hit by a truck because I went straight on the street without a care. I never ever retried any medications like that, then they wanted to try Ativan (Lorazepam) as a daily medication but this is a drug that some drug addicts love to use so I refuse to even think about using it regularly, but when I go to the dentist or have surgery, I have some prescribed and those things are so wonderful, had my retina in my left eye reattached and I was like, theses lights are cool (he was using a laser in my eye) perhaps this could be useful for Ezra for some specific moments, I even cut the pills in half and have a perfect effect when I need it.

I’ve been on and off various meds my whole life. I’ve been off my focus/adhd medications since I started online school (I’m graduated now) and went back on Fluoxetine to treat my anxiety last year. My dosage was upped to 60mg as the 40mg was starting to be ineffective at work and trigger my adhd symptoms (pacing, always being on the go usually). I’m only almost a week into it though so I’ll update on improvements.

Thanks for letting us know. Meds can help but it is such a journey to find what works. And most of the time they aren’t a long term fix. But we’ve heard from some that the right kind and right amount can make a big difference.

You are such great parents to your son. I would have prefer natural methods of medications pure body extra spray are really good, but its expensive. It helps trust me. And vitamins too. Omega3 fish oil DHA is also good vitamin B6, B12.

Im so scared to try meds for my 5yo...shes also crazy active! Never ever stops moving and is an emotional rollercoaster. ASD, ADHD and anxiety are a lot for one little body. With me a combination of adhdmedication and anti-depressive medication was the solution. But it sure was hard before the doctor succeded to find that combination for me. I have the same diagnosis as Ezra plus a few more, I learned to speak around the same age as he is now.

@@7Aheadfamily My memorys from learning to speak is that I first learned to say the letters, my speach therapist learned me that, for example, that snakes say ”S” and rabbits says ”F” and I tried to copy the sounds, with time I learned to put the letters together to words and with time sentences :) My voice was very whispering after that in many years but got louder and now I actually have a tendecy to speak to loud and fast instead 😅

love your videos. very informative. just please be careful on medicine. you want him to be him not a zombie. I know we all need help but I think in today's world doctors give out to much meds and not listen to what we need to help not hurt. please don't take this as critizing I know time is hard, but kids do grow up and are better than what we think they can do, I volunteer at a pre-school and the teachers always keep the kids dope up and I didn't like that. so I always tried to help take some stress off the teacher and work with the kids alone.

I'm a 65-year-old autistic. I take a minimum dose antidepressant. When I'm not, I feel like I have more energy, but before long, I begin to notice signs of depression, like an urge to self hurt. Before someone figured out ASD, I was diagnosed ADD and took Aderrall XR, but I did not notice any change.

I take so many meds its hard to keep track of them, i would be careful with some adhd meds. For me some meds were bringing down my blood pressure; just something to keep track of. That was just for me, meds work differently for every person.

I find I get lots and lots of side affects, especially from antidepressants. It’s a case of given it a go and seeing if it helps or not. I hate that feeling of being doped up and unable to think. Not a easy journey though,but if you can find something that helps the that is good. Shoes, they are first thing I take of as soon as I get home and would happily go without them if I could, but one has to be practical.

I wasnt on meds for autism or adhd. But when i had seizures i had gone thru different meds between the ages of 8-21. I had really high doses in high school that ppl thought i was spaced out all the time. But i dont remember much for detail and what types of meds

Good luck with your journey. It is up and down. What we are starting to give Ezra is METHYLPHENIDATE for ADHD and GUANFACINE for autism Tics, which are the repetitive side effects that he gets from the ADHD medication. Hope this helps. We are just trying this out, so we don’t know how he’ll do with it. We don’t give it to him every day, only a few days a week. He needs breaks from the meds.

I've taken stimulant medication since elementary school. It changed me from a distracted, disruptive student and turned me into a compliant zombie 🧟‍♂! I never took it on the weekends, though, because I wanted my emotions and I wanted to be able to feel things. Overall, it helped me to succeed. I can't imagine ever having graduated high school without it. I still needed my IEP + accommodations, and a couple of non-mainstream classes here and there. Although, as a kid, my diagnosis was ADHD. I've been re-tested twice as an adult and they said I don't have ADHD, but instead, ASD level 1. I feel more ADHD than anything, but maybe that is because I identified with that for so long. I'm honestly not sure who or what to believe anymore these days! I simply identify as neurodivergent ∞ 😅 !! Oh, and I now take a much smoother version of the medication I've always been on. I only wish this version was an option during my childhood. It would have saved me from a lot of ups and downs. This one I don't mind taking everyday because it's not overly harsh like the previous formulations.

@@7Aheadfamily Vyvanse (Lisdexamfetamine) is what I take now. It addresses the harsh ups and downs I received from immediate-release and even extended-release forms of these same compounds as a child through early adulthood. Although, I cannot rate this specific formulation in an educational setting, it definitely helps me focus. I don't dread taking Vyvanse everyday like I did with Adderall, Dexedrine, etc... Those were not particularly pleasant.

​@@7Aheadfamily You're welcome! I wish I could be more helpful with experiences, but mine are just limited since I am now older and in a different type of life setting and mindset entirely. I went through an obsessive phase for months which I tried to learn as much as I could about the different medications, and of course those in the pipeline being tested in clinical trials. The stimulants are the route that I was started on as a child, and I was never encouraged to try the non-stimulant categories since the stimulant medications seemed to provide the outcome my parents and teachers wanted for me at the time. It can be so easy to get lost in all the different brand names for all of these medications as well, but it is less confusing if you break these medications down by their two main categories (stimulant vs non-stimulant) as well as their active drug so to speak. - For the stimulants (these affect dopamine and norepinephrine), the two main molecules are amphetamine(Adderall, Evekeo, Mydayis, etc...) and methylphenidate(Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, etc...). Over the years these ingredients got more refined, resulting in cleaner versions with potentially better side effect profiles. Amphetamine can be considered an NDRA(releasing agent of dopamine and norepinephrine) consists of d-amphetamine and l-amphetamine, and when you leave out the l-amp and just include the d-amp part of the molecule, your main active drug is dextroamphetamine(Dexedrine, ProCentra, Zenzedi, etc...). Now, they took this one step further by creating lisdexamfetamine(Vyvanse, the one I take now 💙), a prodrug which the body has to break down and convert into dextroamphetamine for it to become active. This likely explains why it is so smooth and works well for me. The same goes for the methylphenidate(Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, etc...) and it is considered an NDRI(reuptake inhibitor of dopamine and norepinephrine). What can be considered the more refined and tolerated version of it is known as dexmethylphenidate(Focalin). More recently, and only within the past two years, has a prodrug for dexmethylphenidate actually become available on the market, and it is known as serdexmethylphenidate, but the brand name Azstarys (being newer is especially $$$ even with insurance) is actually a combination of the immediate-release dexmethylphenidate AND the prodrug serdexmethylphenidate with the goal of creating not only an immediate-release version of the drug, but also a prodrug that slowly metabolizes for a steady effect that lasts all day. (I have no experience with this one, but I would consider it if it came down to it. If for some reason I had to stop Vyvanse or switch for some unknown reason, Azstarys is likely what I would be asking my doctor about next.) - The last class of ADHD drugs would be considered the non-stimulants. Non-stimulants come in the form of NRIs (reuptake inhibitor of norepinephrine, so, think of methylphenidate but without affecting dopamine!) and also in the form of adrenergic agonists (they are technically considered antihypertensive agents historically for treating blood pressure issues). There are really only two NRIs on the market right now in America, and these are Atomoxetine(Strattera) and Viloxazine(Qelbree), the latter being fairly new and likely $$$!! For the adrenergic agonists, you have guanfacine(Intuniv) and clonidine(Kapvay). From what I've read, these can make one generally sleepy, especially as they adjust. I've personally never been prescribed these, so I don't know much other than what I've read in literature and reports. Overall, non-stimulants seem to be hit or miss for many people, with stimulants purportedly being the most efficacious. It would seem there are a good portion of people out there who benefit from the dopamine modulation that the non-stimulant medications don't provide. The dopamine modulation is also what contributes to abuse potential and makes the stimulant medications controlled substances (aka PITA for those of us who don't abuse our medications). - As someone who has been on medication for ADHD from childhood through adulthood, this is everything that I think is important to know about the various medications out there.

I take Adderall & Resperidone for my ADHD & autism, they help me somewhat be social & calm down, side effects are bigger appetite, having womens breasts, better sleep. As an adult, i like the afternoon naps after work due to the meds.

How do doctors properly diagnose ADHD if they can't see if his symptoms might just be part of the autism? I hear a lot of people who say their kids have autism and ADHD and I wonder how doctors can ascribe problems with learning and concentration to ADHD when it wouldn't be unlikely for that to happen to kids with autism.

This is what Ezra is taking now…METHYLPHENIDATE for ADHD and GUANFACINE for autism Tics, the repetitive side effects that he gets from the ADHD medication.

@@7Aheadfamily Thank you. I have never heard of Methylphenidate, but I have heard of Guanfacine from my work in a school setting with special students. My son is now an adult. He takes Depakote (valproic acid) and Risperidone. It is a hard decision to try medications. We are always trying to weigh the benefits and risks. I wish your family well with what you are trying for Ezra. I hope he will have lots of benefits that are encouraging and that help you to be able to connect with him in more meaningful ways.

My son was diagnosed with mild autism.He is recently for 3 weeks trying medications.He is on Guanfacine but still he is having behavioral problems at school some days plus no doing his homework there.He is doing Kindergarden now He is 5 years old I will go to a next appointment on October and I hope the doctor change his medication because possible this is not working . Home school possible will be my next choice because I can control my son way better It’s Ezra doing home school ??

Yeah, that is tough. Ezra is doing six hours a day of in-home therapy. We had him in school at kindergarten age as well, but it was more of just babysitting, so we feel like this is better. We have tried guanfacine on Ezra as well. We just have so much trouble with negative side effects that we have again reverted to no medication. We are continuing to look for some thing to help his ADHD, because it’s just so hard for him to focus. Will keep you posted with progress. ❤️ much love, keep in touch.

I’m curious if you guys have done any genetic testing to see if there’s anything genetic. We have 2/3 kids with autism, one mild and one moderate-severe. In our case nothing was found.

I can't sleep easily at night without meds, I can sleep in day times but not in night time, it takes one hours or sometimes two hours to get me sleep, even before I got major depressive disorder, idk if it is an autism sign or not since I'm not too sure about it, do Ezra and Simon can sleep easily at night?
