Wow, my son has been diagnoised with autisim and his experiences have made me wonder about myself, this is so interesting because I used to have a fluffy owl, and I used to rub a very specific part of the owls wing under my nose for comfort, I remember doing it, and the owl was well loved from my memories as I had already been doing it for years. I was labelled a shy from a young age. I never felt shy I just didn't speak to strangers or in large groups. Anyway thank you for sharing your experiences.

That she's a healthy baby, that is common in houses where 2 languages are spoken. 🤦♀️ I contacted CPS and they were able to provide the phone number for a specialist in my county who has already taken the info over the phone to contact our insurance and get it approved and we are waiting for an appointment for the evaluation.

I just want to express my gratitude for you doing this. And one small thing: autistic people don't really like that term "high functioning autism". It portrays the idea that the autism spectrum is a straight line, where everybody falls somewhere on the line. Which is just not the case. Also, it's quite the ableist term. I by no means want to disrespect you, and I'm sure you didn't mean it that way. Just wanted to let you know
@dee74raz3 жыл бұрын
Yes I don't like that term, because each child with autism is different. It shouldn't be about high or low level. It's like an insult to a child.
@navigatingautismwithdani3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I’ve come to realize with my own children it just isn’t that simple as high or low and really quite misleading. Any suggestions on better terminology?
@Sternensaatenlesungen3 жыл бұрын
@@navigatingautismwithdani first of all, I love how you could see for yourself in your own children that it just isn't that simple, and that those functioning labels can't even begin to capture the personality of ANY individual person!!! You could say "high or low support needs". Also, you could specify the autistic traits that you see in your children. It's almost like every autistic trait has it's own spectrum, and just because someone is autistic, doesn't mean that person will have the same combination of traits as another autistic individual. Does that make sense?
@navigatingautismwithdani2 жыл бұрын
Totally makes sense, thanks for the help with the wording. I really appreciate it, and will keep it in mind for future videos. Yes, I love the way you summarized it above, it's so true. Each of my 3 kids that have the diagnosis are so different in their needs. Thanks!!

@navigatingautismwithdani2 жыл бұрын
All my kids were on track for gross motor skills, their fine motor skills started to lag around the 18-24 month mark. My older daughters speech seemed amazing, but that was also compared to 2 kids who had speech delays. She does actually have all the criteria for Speech Pragmatic Disorder, which affects memory of words, planning and organization of thoughts, and more. So she would ask something over and over, like she couldn't absorb the answer. Hope this helps!

my 2 year old drives me nuts. She looks at my eyes sometimes. Before she did not. yes she taps her toys on her lips. sometimes. she has bad meltdowns, I would cry. She repeats word now. She does rock and forward only in the bed on a big pillow. That is the first time I thought autism maybe. She has a hard time me changing her diaper. Taking a bath and get dressed. It is like a mission and I get exhausted. I know what she wants when I ask her if she wants to drink or juice. The doctor says she has mild autism. If he says so. But the meltdowns are the only thing that I cant handle. Screaming and kicking. OMG. When I say not to touch, she listens sometimes. She goes to a school for autism. Love her to death but I have to not let my nerves get the best of me. I used to think that vaccines cause autism. NOPE. And she does hug me sometimes and she kisses me sometimes. I dont know if it is really autism.
@navigatingautismwithdani2 жыл бұрын
Being a parent to a child is hard, especially one that needs additional support. It's a lot to cope with and it is draining but we keep doing it because we love our kids and want the best for them. The meltdowns are the worst as you can't really help when they are in that state. It's hard on the nervous but i find reminding myself sometimes it isn't about me, and to just take a step back helps. Once she calms a bit, I can usually help her the rest of the way. From what you describe I definetly hear signs of Autism. Each child is unique in their presentation in how it affects them exactly. The usual symptom commonalities I find tend to come down to emotional regualtion, social abilities- such as relationships/ interaction not basic eye contact., and hyperfocused/ repetitive behavior. Hope this is helpful! You got this!

I just want to say thank you for sharing your experiences. I am currently in therapy trying the diagnose for autism, in Brazil, where I'm from, they use CID and not DSM, so the assessment is longer, takes months and sometimes years. But I am happy just for the fact that I found a neuropsychologist that believe in my struggles and are trying to figure out what's been happening. I self diagnosed myself with Asperger's Syndrome by quizzes online and stuff, after reading amounts of information and trying to be fair in judging the signs with fear that I might being hypochondriac lol But every time I see moms talking about their children in the spectrum I simply can hear my mom talking about me as a child, only she didn't had the knowledge to distinguish the behaviors I was displaying. @navigatingautismwithdani2 жыл бұрын
For us we had to discuss with our pediatrician, and get a referal to the developmental clinic. From there we filled out a questionnaire with a lot of questions about development and why we felt concerned. After they received that we had an appointment with someone at the clinic to discuss even more questions about their development. Once all of that was done we then had an appointment with a developmental team which consisted of an occupational therapist, speech therapist, kids neurologist, and kids psychologist. Where they do some testing using standardized exams, they will play with them and ask them to identify things in the pictures. After that they sit and discuss their observations. Then they let you know what they think. That is how it went for us pretty much. Hope this helps you!

I was wondering are Autistic toddlers always quieter than atypical children? Or could they be loud too? I am asking about 18 month old and under babbling toddlers that don't talk yet? I know that when older Autistic children are non communicative they scream and screech because of lack of communication so does it change from quiet to screaming or what?
@navigatingautismwithdani3 жыл бұрын
I have a few kids with autism diagnosis and I have one who was very quiet, and one who was the opposite. Screaching/ screaming could be from frustration of not being able to communicate what they need or a self soothing behavior. Generally if they like noise they will squeal from a younger age. Also it’s important to offer them other forms of communication via pics or sign language. Just because they aren’t verbal doesn’t mean they can’t express their thoughts.

I am 61 years of age. That said, I lived in a time of small pox. Polio. and measles. I found comfort with blanket.; "Blankie." This was a very normal sensory soothing mechanism. Much like present day pacifiers. I, as well, enjoyed the rocking motion. I really think that this modern society has and will continue to diagnosis Autism at an alarming rate. I lived in a era that when kids became anxious, a good run around the backyard relieved tension! When temper tantrums presented ( now called melt downs ) a good amount of time in my bedroom with no dinner solved the problem!
@navigatingautismwithdani3 жыл бұрын
I hear what you are saying, however this isn’t just mild comfort seeking. The key here is is the amount of the behavior. If it was something that didn’t interrupt her ability to function throughout the day then it would be normal behavior. Temper tantrum’s and meltdowns aren’t the same thing. Meltdowns are when a child is unresponsive to anyone, if it was just a temper tantrum then when you offered what they wanted they would snap out of it. A meltdown is more of an overwhelmed emotional break. I hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion you had.

"something going on" is not necessarily autism. I feel a true case is easily noticeable; getting to age 7 with no diagnosis and being in public school is a sign, IMO, she is not autistic or barely autistic, if that is a term.
