Not a great week for Andy this week - he was having issues with sleeping at school, he hurt his foot and he had a meltdown at school, something he hasn't done for a long time. In other news, Anna is starting to apply for jobs and we went to explore Huntingdon as a potential place for us to live after she starts work.

ABOUT KEVIN CHAPMAN
I'm a 37 year old KZbinr from the UK. I've got a cracking beard and I'm currently going through the autism diagnosis process. I started this channel back in 2017 and by the time I left my full-time job as a Computer Science teacher in July of that year, my partner Anna was trapped in our house by our son Andy, who is autistic and had refused to go to school for 18 months. Our daughters Lucy and Amy and our dog Dave hardly saw me because I was always working to try and solve all our problems! Today I'm a full-time content creator and always at home when the kids get home from school (all our kids!) and Anna has been able to return to university. This channel is the story of my ongoing journey! Previously known as lollujo Vlogs and The Chapman Family.

I was on half the normal dose of celexa (another common ssri) for most of my twenties and resisted raising it for a long time because I was still holding on to the stigma. A bad breakup in my late twenties forced me raise to the typical starting adult dose of 20 mg, and I haven't looked back since. It may just be Andy's form of teen angst, but raising his prozac to the dosage appropriate to his weight would probably help! He's lucky to have you and Anna looking out for him, Kev!

You guys are doing an awesome job! I'm a support worker for young adults with autism and I love my job but challenging behaviours take a lot out of me. The boy I support had bit me but it has made us have more of a bond as he always asks for me. Your videos inspire me to be a better support worker, thank you x

The first thing I thought of was if his medication needed adjusting. Hopefully that is what it is and can get fixed rather easily. I know how difficult it can be to figure all these things out, and our boys are close to the same age. Gotta love puberty and hormones and all that mess!

I am worried that Andys school might not be looking after him very well. He seems to generally behave worse and be uncomfortable at school than at home? Perhaps that suggests that the school needs to get their act together and adjust how they treat him, possible up the ressources they spend on him etc.

I have an autistic friend who does beat saber at therapy. It’s musical, which he’s well engaged in, and it’s also got a physical and mental challenge element which helps.
@Trustfuleevees
@Trustfuleevees 4 жыл бұрын
His thing is, he’s great at conversation and communication when he’s calm, but as the day goes on, he gets gradually more distressed, and so the therapy helps him release. Days he doesn’t have therapy, he plays music at home and it’s how he calms down.

Now I'm guessing you've probably bought or tired a SAD alarm clock for Andy, since he likes being woken by the sunlight. Or does it upset him, as it makes him think it's sunny when it's not. Also need the name of the comic book shop, in Huntingdon once a month and often wonder what's worth a visit.

Maybe he was feeling school was challenging too much, and was using sleep to get through the day, and when sleep wasn’t allowed it got too difficult, sleep was hiding the problems. I don’t know about other autistic people, but I can feel when I’m about to go into a meltdown or I’m seriously close, Andy may have been feeling that and then asked to sleep to try and get out of it. He’s probably way over due a medication increase. It must be horrible for him, I’ve had meltdowns like that and they are exhausting and it feels like the world is ending. Considering what he has achieved in the last 18 months I think Andy can get through this tough patch, especially once his medication is made accurate again. He might just be going through a bad patch and will come out of it in his own time, but obviously given what’s happened before it’s a bit concerning.

YeetoCheeto 42069 it’s hard to explain, not least because once my meltdowns are over I remember very little of what’s happened. The best way I can describe it is it’s like the world is ending, everything is wrong and you just lose control. It feels like nothing can make the situation better, and it’s all just too much. It’s horrible and exhausting, it can be loads of anger, upset, total anxiety and often a mixture of the three. My brain feels “full” and I just can’t think anymore. It’s different for everyone but that’s how I’d describe it. One thing I will say is it is always harder on the person having the meltdown than anyone around them, whatever the situation.

Calve, I know the title of your video says meltdown, but the way you described it makes me think it was more of a tantrum. I’m not very well-versed in autism, but that’s just what it seems like to me. I know that all autism families deal with their kids differently, and I sort of like the way you are nipping this situation in the bud. Letting him sleep at school is not the best thing to do for him.

I wondered if using weekend incentives for not sleeping at school and not refusing might help. Like let him pick something on a Sunday evening that he wants to do and keep reminding him each day if he goes to school and doesn't sleep at school he can do his thing on Saturday. Sorry if this sounds like I'm being patronising I'm sure you probably already thought of this but just trying to come up with anything at all that might help.

Hey Guys, I originally left a Super Long Comment, but, it seems that it has been lost in the Clacks. It may Pop up, it may Not. I dunno. Either way, I am *really* sorry that Andy had a Terrible week at School, and i am Devastated to hear about that Meltdown, that's an awful shame for Him, Poor Wee Lamb, as He was doing so well with His Behaviour. I do hope this Week goes a lot better for Him at School and You can find out what Has caused Him to "Regress" back a Few Years, so that You can get Him back on Track (I know Andy loves Trains and Trams, so I feel that is a Saying He would Appreciate :) ) again and He has a much better Time at School in Future. I am glad that Andy had Great Saturday however :) and I hope He has a Blast with the Re-Released Lego City Undercover Game :) Well, take care now Guys, Bye!

Meltdowns will always occur the goal is that with age, coping techniques, better communication,proper med, sensory toys, etc that the rate and severity of meltdowns lessens as they learn to self regulate and talk through their issues but it its a package deal Autism and meltdowns even "higher functioning" adults on the spectrum with families and bills still meltdown everyone has a breaking point
