ABOUT KEVIN CHAPMAN
Hi, I'm Kevin Chapman, a full-time KZbinr, author, podcaster, speaker and occasional teacher from Peterborough, UK. As part of my daily vlog I release new videos every day at 5pm UK time with topics including life as an autism family, conventions and geek culture, technology, education and tutorials and entrepreneurship.
When I left my full-time as a Computer Science teacher in July 2017, my partner, Anna, was trapped in our house by our son Andy, who is autistic and had refused to go to school for 18 months. Our daughters Lucy and Amy and our dog Dave hardly saw me because I was always working to try and solve all our problems! Today I'm a full-time content creator who's always at home when my kids get home from school (all our kids!) and Anna has been able to return to university. This channel is the story of my family's ongoing journey! Previously known as lollujo Vlogs.

My son is the same way. He isn't into playing video games, but he is in love with KZbin. He likes to go back and forth from his tablet to my phone.

I’m always happy to see Andy engaged on his devices! How lucky he is to live in a time when these resources exist for him, and how lucky he is to have such conscientious and devoted parents!

I'm 30 years old and Autistic, in my teens I found forums and had the only experience I had ever had of truly belonging as an equal to a group of people. I have neurotypical siblings and they found the internet often impeded their social lives but for me the internet gave me a social life. That it took place online was never something that I will ever see as bad. It was something that gave me something I find almost impossible to recreate in life, infact even now I don't think I ever have. I think for a lot of people who get concerned about technology and detrimental effects of technology are the people who are able to build those relationships outside of technology, learn the things they need to learn outside of it, shop in stores easily etc. For me, technology has been so overwhelmingly positive.

my son was diagnosed with asd a year ago this month and he isnt social at all except with me, my mom, my granny, my cousin and her son thats 3 months older than him. put when hes on his ps4 he will talk to people. i bought him a headset so he could. i thought it would be good for him to get a little social communication from someone other than us. i honestly believe the only reason he talks to them is because he cant see them. its been a learning experience for me. but my granny seems to think nothing is wrong with him other than hes showing out and he needs his booty busted and ive even shown her the paper work. but i love your videos and i love when andy winks. so adorable!

We also found that watching past videos of things we did together was helpful in preparing her for future trips etc. we also found out later on that this is actually really important as it helps build something called episodic memory (emotions attached to experiences) which also helps with creating a sense of self. Now she makes videos of her self and I think that also helps her have an understanding of who she is an individual.

Hey Kev, on an iPad, you can go settings>battery and see the usage and time spent on all apps. I thought this would be interesting for maybe you or us to see if possible on Andy's iPad... and YOUR phone! :)

We get a lot of comments from people about how much my 5 year old uses his tablet and youtube. My son has two kindles and i am constantly told we spoil him but they have no idea what it is like to be at an apointment and have a tablet battery die and not have a back up... KZbin has become a form of communication for my non-verbal son that has allowed him to have a voice of some kind and he has learned to spell with aps that also has helped him express his needs and really has learned so much school wise that we were struggling to get him to engage with! Loved the video! Would love a second part!

Wow, this is the FIRST time I have watched these kinds of videos from you and it was a pretty good conversation! I do feel like in quite a bit of circumstances, I have witnessed the same thing. (iPads and Autism) It calms the person at the same time it is super entertaining. Do you know the specific education apps you would recommend to us? Yet again, great talk and hopefully I will tune in to more of these videos! I'll think of some questions and maybe they will pop up soon!

As an 80's baby (just a bit older than you Kevin) I can really appreciate the comments on tech, and how things have changed since the 80's!! I think the world (when it comes to tech) is SO much better now, and it continues to get better :-) - Really loved this video.

Izzy Doyle they’ve spoken about his briefly but I can’t remember what video this was in!! It’s likely that Andy will live with Anna and Kev until they are too old to care for him but I remember Kev saying that although Andy probably isn’t going to do his gcses in a few years, this isn’t something they won’t consider later on in his life so it is very possible that Andy could find a job in the future. Tbh though, I think the main priority for Andy is that he’s happy and healthy, he’s very slowly gaining and adding small elements to his diet which is a big step for Andy.

Hi Kevin I know what you mean by technology I started playing games when I was young and find it calm me down because I had really behaviour problems growing up but I only started getting help for it about 3 years go and put on risperidone and only just find out why it is because I got personality disorder but I find gaming and KZbin really help me to relax plus your videos help me as well I normally get bored of gaming KZbin videos but I love your vlogs and one other KZbinr vlogs where I try to watch them as soon as there are available so thank you for that and for helping me to learn more about autism one subject I would like to know is about sports/pe how does Andy deal with them and is there one he enjoys doing

If I even try to take my son's away for long periods of time it's like the end of the world has just happened. It's his nitch. Some are into art. Some are into movies. Some are into music. My son is into computers. We have narrowed it down even further for our son and it's computertronics sound waves. He's constantly listening for that perfect pitch that is most pleasing to him.

Following on from this video: Do you see introduction of self service tills in restaurants and supermarkets a positive for Andy because of his interest in them or do you feel that he misses out on developing his human interaction with strangers? Hope for a response because given the journey Andy is on it appears to be a catch 22. Thanks for the great content Kev, keep it up!
