I'm autistic 20 year-old and here's how I would explain being visually overstimulated. Imagine that every inch of color you see is the brightess light possible in that color. It isn't how I see it but, it is how I feel it. Another way to see it is, imagine that every single dot or tiny detail on anything (walls, lights, desk, table, chair, book, etc) is the most important thing ever. Now, add seeing the lights as 50 times stronger then what they are (assuming you have light sensitivity). You would get overwhelmed really fast if this was how you see the world and this is the closest I can get to describing how I see the world. That's why I, and others like me, might need a visual sensory break from time to time.

I'll add that, to help me, I always keep the lights dimmed at my appartment to at least reduce the light sensitivity.

I get very overwhelmed in malls and in crowded places because of all the visual and auditory input. I have actually found that what helps me is having a stuffie with me (having something to ground me helps). I also found that ear defenders have helped me a lot. Thanks for the content about autism! It actually is helpful to know that these sensory issues that I had my whole life were actually from autism (i was diagnosed at 24).

You are amazing. Even though I'm autistic myself, I can't relate to Ezra's experience of visual overstimulation (except for bright lights). It's fascinating to get a better understanding of how he and some other folks on the spectrum see the world. Now I understand why one autistic child I used to teach used to back into my hugs rather than hugging me from the front! The "autistic kids aren't affectionate" stereotype is so horrible and damaging, and this video clearly shows how it's not a lack of affection that's happening, it's sensory overload. Edit: I do actually get visually overstimulated sometimes, but only when I'm already very upset. Sound is much more of a problem for me in my daily life.

When something is visually overstimulated it physically hurts me to look at the item in question... for example a busy quilt literally makes me close my eyes and look away because my mind tells me its a danger... same with strobe lights. My overstimulation is more touch and hearing based and I just get to the point where I need to have NOTHING touching me or making noise. White noise and fans make my heart race and I go into what looks like a panic attack that instantly stops once the noise ends. If I'm over touched I can't even stand my hair touching me. Its rough but I get through it after a 15-20 minute regulation period.

I've always struggled with visual overstimulation, and my biggest struggle is picking out what i want when there's more than 2 options. One thing that helps me come to a decision is I pick a broad category that i want most like candy or chips or something like that, then I make the categorys more specific, for example gummy candy, or chocolate, etc. the last thing i do is pick 2 from the category then i pick the one i want most. A lot of people have called me an indecisive person, but really I get visually overstimulated which impairs my decision making skills. Once the options are narrowed down it makes it easier to come a decision.

I get visually overstimulated to things like such as school work when there's too much information everywhere it basically looks like letters jumping it's kind of hard to explain bc I end up blanking out and get told I had a meltdown, also to lights it's like they are flashing and blinking a lot and shine too much my brain goes haywired, there's more examples but I can't think of them rn.

When I get overstimulated with sights, sounds or smells (especially strong smells like coffee brewing) I sometimes have a migraine as a result. These cause nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light. I also experience areas of blurriness before the headache hits that are almost circular, but not quite. This is almost like looking through an eyeglass lens that is the wrong prescription when I look at (or try to look through) the areas that are blurry. Sometimes when I am having a migraine I talk less than I usually do and people will think that I am angry with them or giving them the silent treatment. I wonder if Ezra might be having migraines (at least occasionally).

Thank you for sharing your own experience. It’s very possible that Ezra could be having headaches or migraines. He will sometimes hit his head against the wall. That could be a sign that his head hurts. But other than that, we really have no way of knowing if he’s having a migraine. He doesn’t have a way to tell us if he’s hurting or where he’s hurting. That makes it difficult. What do you usually do to help your migraines? I get headaches all the time. -Holly

@@7Aheadfamily When I get a migraine I will usually go into a room that is as quiet as possible and turn the lights off. I can’t usually sleep when I’m having a migraine but when I do I usually tend to have strange dreams (or even nightmares). Therefore I will usually just take some deep breaths and try to relax until it passes instead of sleeping. I also struggled with being able to tell people if I was in pain when I was younger. I might have been as old as six-and-a-half or seven when I was first able to do this. One time when I was six years old I had a double ear infection and I wasn’t able to tell my father or my mother that my ears hurt. I was just able to put my hands over my ears and cry like an infant or a younger toddler. It was only when my mother noticed that my ears were red and that my forehead felt warm that I was taken to a local hospital and given a small amount of liquid Tylenol and given a liquid antibiotic that tasted like bananas. It is good that Simon is able to say some basic things like “no owie” like in the doctor’s visit video where they were putting a new strap on at least one of the braces for his feet. Is Simon able to tell you if his head or stomach hurts (for example)? If not, then this is something that his speech therapist can work on with him.
@JonBrase

Around age 1, my mother reports that I would hit my head against the wall and smile/laugh. I've never had migraines. So it could just be a stim, and even a happy one (though I've definitely heard of and seen autistic people hitting their heads in clear distress). The point of all this is, he could well be having migraines from overestimation, but with the head banging being a completely separate thing.

That's a clever solution to feeding! I strongly suspect I have ASD and ADHD, probably also sensory processing disorder. I can be visually overstimulated by patterns on plates, cluttered surfaces & rooms, too many voices at once, bright lights, flashing lights, mirrors, open cupboard doors, things I can see that need my attention (as a mum, that's a lot). I'm sometimes overstimulated by being close to people ... sounds, smells, movement, vision problems so I can't see them clearly when they're close. Usually, being visually overstimulated is a sign that there are other factors overwhelming my senses and thoughts ... stress, conflict, worry, busyness, emotions, hunger, fatigue, etc. I see too much, but it's only a symptom of an already overloaded brain. Also, visual information is harder to sift and look past - I notice a lot so it can be a lot of excess information all at once, even if it's 'good'. I like visual stimulation that I can control - I'm obsessed with painting, reading, writing and I also enjoy solving number and word problems, and 'sometimes' jigsaw puzzles ... I guess these hobbies/ stims draw all of my focus to the task at hand, and give me a break from what I find challenging and everything going on around me.

But for me, if there’s too much to look at, (I.e a huge plate of food or a lot of different kinds of food in front of me) I get overwhelmed and kind of shut down. This is a fantastic video, it will be so helpful to other parents, your ability to undated your children and the way you have learned what they respond to is fantastic, it’s a case of watching and getting to know what is happening and not giving up because something don’t work the first time, this example that Ezra eating and how his visual stimulation makes him unable to take the food, it’s not he don’t want it, he can’t cope with taking the food because it’s too much at that point in time, so a small adjustment made so much difference . Ezra is very affectionate in his own way and he interacts in his own way, he’s a lovely little boy. I get really overloaded by noise especially thud thud thud of loud music, it drive me to meltdown, I cannot function when a neighbour is thudding out their music, I can cope for a while, but if it keeps going I just meltdown, it’s awful. I also find that when music is played in the background of somebody talking, like they do for an ‘atmosphere’ I simply cannot take in or understand what is being said and I feel utterly overwhelmed, so much noise, I cannot separate out what I’m supposed to focus on. It’s one huge jumble of sound. Maybe Ezra sees EVERYTHING, like I cannot separate out the background noise, so the whole lot overwhelms him,may be his visual field is so overwhelmed that he cannot separate out you offering him some food, but when you offer from behind he’s not having to separate out that pice of food from the visual field. Until he can tell you we can’t know, but that’s would make sense.

For me is like, most people filter out irrelevant stimuli to focus only in what matter and i can't. I have audio, visual, touch and smell, the whole package. The audio, visual makes it really hard to go on the street, because when i go out, all the lights, colors, ads, and everything comes to me at the same time and it's really overwhelming. Adding to the sounds everywhere. Like a computer that goes in the limit of his computing power trying to process everything that was given as input. I honestly avoid it when i can because is very stressfull and need to recover after it but when i do go out i put some headphones with music or podcast to take other sounds for the equation and give me something to try focusing on. I saw a tik tok from an autistic person that said the world is made for people that can filter out the stimuli, so if you go to a store it all be so loud to call to those people attention and that makes it deafening to us to a point is painful. The touching thing was very complicated when i was a kid, because no one respect a kid that does not want to be touched right? Now that i am an adult people respect this more.

This is why i don't like much the levels nomination, i prefer calling low or high support needs and this is not set on stone and can change in time. Because people call my autism level one and mild, but it was always very difficult for me and that fact i could mask or deal with in a way that it did not bother "society" never made it easier os less uncomfortable for myself.

My mom would try to help me with this even not knowing my diagnosis, because of my adhd i can get overstimulated because of autism and at the same time understimulated because of ADHD. An example of this is after a 8 hour day of work, autism is overstimulated and exhausted of all social interactions, meetings and etc. But ADHD is understimulated because i was working all day, so this part of me feels bored and wants to play but i am too tired and feel both at the same time. When i was a kid my mom would ask what strategies i would do in the outting like, "what you going to bring?", a book so it distracts me, or a toy, phones to filter out sound and etc. And we have pre arranged timming for it to be over, like, after happy birthday we are out.

@@7AheadfamilyFor my part there's no particular overstimulation I can identify in crowds, but I just have a large personal bubble. I think a big part of it is joint stability issues: I was a groomsman at my brother's wedding recently, and according to the pastor, we were supposed to be standing as stock still as possible, and my legs got *so* stiff that I was in agony by the end. I need to be able to rock side to side when standing, not as a stim (though it does function as such), but simply to keep my joints from getting mad at me. Likewise, when sitting, I need to be able to lean against something to one side or the other for support, which often means having one arm down on the seat next to me, so I feel really cramped in packed seating. I think Marie may have similar joint stability issues: she seems to have a lot of the same postural preferences as me.

@7Aheadfamily
@7Aheadfamily 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing about your son. I know autism has its challenges, but we are also extremely grateful for each one of our sons. I knew that after having Ezra, our next child may be autistic as well. We knew that, going into that decision, and we decided that if God wanted to give us another special Autistic child, then we would love that child no matter what, be so grateful to be his or her parents and help him or her gain the most independence that they could in this life. We are very religious, and our faith is strong that God has a plan for each of his children. We know that someday Ezra Will talk, even if it’s not in this world, then someday. I will have a very long chat with him! That is very reassuring for us as a family. I often have dreams of Ezra being able to talk. Simon and Ezra both bring so much joy and an eternal perspective into our life as a family. I know that the three older kids are more aware of other children in their class and school, because they have younger siblings, who have different abilities, and who need more support. I know that the three older kids are more compassionate and more empathetic and less judging, simply because our home is more loving. And I can guarantee that it’s more loving because of Ezra and Simon. I hope that somewhat answers your question as to how we decided to have another child after Ezra. ❤️❤️❤️

The best way I could describe it, is, imagine somethings too loud, for your eyes. I get a headache, or feel angry. Or both. Some of us say that colors bleed off of objects, but, idk how accurate that is. I kinda feel like what I'm looking at, causes pain in the back of my eyes. (usually it's a bright or florescent color. ) If I don't do something about it, I do become exhausted, and that can either lead to burn out, or melt down. Sunglasses kinda work, but some of us don't like things over our eyes or face.

I actually don't really have this sign of autism(although I would get visually overstimulated when I have a lot of things to do at the same time), also when you said that in other video that autistic people would get upseted or annoyed when the routine got changed or plans got changed or cancelled, I actually do have that sign, I'm scare to see that plans got changed or cancelled, does Ezra and Simon have that sign?

I am still trying to work all this stuff out myself and often need help to do so, but I think I have an example for visual over stimulation. The main thing that I get overstimulated with is light, and depending on how I am doing mentally it can be either better or worse. So my example, I have spent almost two full months in hospital in the past three years. Hospital is a very ASD unfriendly place in so many ways and I end up having to wear sunglasses and earplugs pretty much all the time because in that situation I am so stressed. Normally I only wear sunglasses outside, and at home I can have the lights on, with not too much problem, but in hospital I have to have any blinds shut and all lights in the room turned off, and the curtains pulled around my bed. You know when you have been in a dark room and you come outside into the bright sun and it is really glarey and you squint and cover your eyes because it is really uncomfortable? Well, when I get to the point of being overstimulated just normal lights in a room make me feel like that. I had not actually thought of it as visual overstimulation until watching this video though, but now I think that is probably what it is.

You mentioned that Simon is very sensitive to smells. Does he react to his own smells as well as other people’s? For example if you put Simon’s nighttime diaper on too soon after dinner and he ends up using it (in any fashion) instead of asking for a bathroom break before bed does the smell bother him? Or does the smell only bother him when Ezra uses his own diaper?

Virtual autism kids feel understimulated after phone withdrawl. My son seeks moving objects which means the real environment isn't speedy enough to satisfy them. So, I think overstimulated kids do see things too fast. Imagine us standing between fast moving psychedelic objects. We'll feel frustrated. That's what overstimulation might feel like.

Great video as usual. First of all, verbal expression would be the last option. Any expression or body senses would come from hand, leg, nose, taste and etc first before verbally. Pushing food away is just an expression that your action has been taking place before, meaning same action done to him to the food he does not like it. Since the food is so small, he could only see your hand. For verbally, he ask 'what is it', or 'do I know what is it in your hand even u told me so' ? Just put on the table, let him capture what he is eating. I bet your son won't eat paper or plastic for everything he is seeing. By putting food at the back, he is basically using the taste to accept it is a food without seeing or blindly, it is quick fix but not long term. Instead after doing that, put the food back on the table or in front of him, you take one of his table and eat in front of your son. Trying few time should he get the picture of the food and remember you are eating it. Great explore for a quick fix. 👍

For me I'm more like Simon and it's usually smells but more extreme, like I wouldn't be able to tolerate it I would gag, and I get really irrationally irritated if I can't get away. I will and do on a few occasions have to run to the toilet to actually throw up luckily my partner is really aware of how sensitive my smell is so has a habit of spraying my wrist with something putting my hand to my fave and pushing me into the room before for example changing a bin, or doing washing up or anything that could potentially disturb an unpleasant smell. Visually I'm less overstimulated but it does happen especially in winter like now I am struggling immensely walking down the street because of the contrast of the darkness with how bright car lights and street lights are. ..the easiest way I can explain the difference is normally they are bright but look normal but if I am overstimulated in anyway I then can't deal with any other stimulus with visual things it's sometimes like my eyes are throbbing in those states , things can get blurry as if my eyes are literally tierd and it feels like anything bright is literally burrowing through my eyes and into my head . .like for the most part I dunno if we actually see differently rather than the intensity is too much, also i find if im really overstimulated I can't see well I feel dizzy and like the room is spinning also I have the same thing as ezra on that if you present something to me and you are taller than me i would push away 😅 ironically not anything to do with the food with me but i feel very threatened when people enter my little bubble like my anxiety goes through the roof and i dont know what to do although most people wouldn't realise how uncomfortable i was as I mask and would just be like no thank you and back away ...my partner is very good at this never asks Infront of me always offers something verbally before even presenting it and dosent try to hand things to me just puts them down if i have said yes infront of me and walks away

Also yes we are affectionate I think this idea actually comes from nuerotypical indaviduals not taking the time to connect or understand there children and nuerodivergent indaviduals...my mother would tell people things like that about me all the time Infront of me and it always hurt my feelings because I tried in my own way but I didn't feel comfortable with the typical ways of exchanging it, I also think she thought I didn't understand because I wasn't talking but I did completely..now as an adult I've learnt that it's okay to express these things differently and I can be incredibly affectionate aslong as I trust and feel safe with the individual

@@7Aheadfamily as far back as I remember really, I would say for sure from about 5 within reason obviously there were words I didn't understand but in general I would say I understood at the normal development age of when the words would normally be spoken , if a little delay in actually paying attention to them. The verbal communication itself took a while to come , but mentally my brain was working just processing things slower because it would process everything rather than what it needed to. And I would find if people spoke really quickly or there was alot of information to digest I may struggle but otherwise in understanding I can't really remember a time when I didn't understand what people were saying for the most part. There are still parts of communication I will never understand the secret spoken rules neurotypicals follow and still get very confused when people say things they don't actually mean for example asking if you can pass something, rather than asking you to and phrasing things as questions when there really instructions. I think alot of it stems from auspies in general not being able to block out things , as I know from speaking to my nuerotypical partner that he definitely dosent even observe half the things that distress me , as if they have an inbuilt filter we don't have. For example sitting on a bus I hear literally everything the engine turning over, people blinking and breathing, the sound of electrics and mechanics, the hum of people's phones , the hum of the lighting, every conversation ... I feel the whole bus vibrating , each fibre of my clothing , if it's warm it's as if I can feel air particles...I smell everyone's breakfast, the petrol of the cars outside , any food or drinks on the bus , everyone's deodorant, now I've asked Colin (my fiancé) if he can hear or see or smell that and he has to focus to work out what I'm talking about as if normally his brain naturally just dosent pay attention to that..I think this is largely the problem we can't turn off that input and it all gets way too much , by the end of the day there's just so much information charging into my head that I want to scream at the world to just stop but obviously it cant there is always some input, and without that filter its insane. By the end of the day I definitely understand less than at the beginning of the day because I just don't have processing space left im still digesting the barrage of sensory input from 3 hours ago because there's so much to go through ...that's also why there is sometimes a delay between stimulus and meltdown because we don't always process that thing until later
