I completely resonate with your experiences as a parent on the autism spectrum. I live with my partner, who has ADHD, and our son, who we suspect is also autistic. Our household can feel like absolute chaos at times. Like you, I thrive on structure, order, and having things in their proper place, but balancing that with my partner’s ADHD tendencies is a massive challenge. They often get frustrated over things, and I find myself in the middle-calming them down or explaining why our son may not fully understand what’s being asked of him, especially when context is missed. On top of that, there’s the constant sensory overload-TVs left on, lights left blazing, and the general noise of family life. It can feel maddening at times, and I deeply understand the struggle to manage it all while trying to keep your own sensory needs in check. Working from home adds another layer of complexity. Even though I’m not in a traditional office, my workplace still doesn’t fully understand my needs, and I find myself fighting to have those accommodations recognised. When my workday ends, I’m often met with a bombardment of sensory input-looking after my son, navigating conversations about plans with my partner, and trying to decompress. Misunderstandings can happen, and when I don’t fully grasp something, it sometimes leads to more frustration, which I then have to work through. It’s a lot to juggle, but hearing about your experiences reminds me that I’m not alone in this. Thank you for sharing your story-it’s encouraging to know there are others navigating similar challenges with resilience and determination.

I'm glad your Mum can help. I didn't know that I was ADHD and autistic till way after my kids were diagnosed. I just had to do the everything. it is tough, I asked my Grandma how she could do that with ten kids when I just had one at the time. It does get easier. But I still cannot relax until the kids are asleep and I watch science shows or something. Some of my kids are adults now. Oh, I drink tea like it's water. I used to drink pots of coffee when I was young.

Hey Dan! I have inattentive ADHD (male, rare I know), this was a helpful insight. I know you have done videos where you compare / contrast ADHD and Aspergers (ASD level 1). But could you go more in depth? Im curious (along with others, probaby) about how to diagnose / cope with the dicotomy of both of these conditions. Best of luck on the channel!

Not enough discussion about a parent who is on the spectrum and with adhd & other comorbidities. There's a lot about parenting a child, but being an autie parent, there's nothing. I feel that it is a topic that gets skirted around; is being an ND parent a taboo? . I was diagnosed after my 5th child, I was in a constant state of overwhelm, trying to internalise, because it appeared I was the only parent struggling, therefore zilch support. My oldest son is an aspie as well, and also has been a solo parent since his daughter was 14mths old. He couldn't cope at all, so they moved back home, where I raised her, gradually helping him to become an independent parent. They moved out last year into their own home, my grandie girl is now 10 , all the playdates and sleepovers are held at my house. I get overwhelmed too, earplugs and my back up crew of husband and the 'cool' aunt who is 21 and living at home.

I agree with you! Honestly, I feel like there isn't enough talk (or support) about Autism in adults.... as if it goes away when you graduate from schools.

I was absolutely blessed. God said to me,” You get one thing that will make this lifetime on earth worth while and it’s being a Mother.” It’s one assignment I understood completely. I found joy in the mundane caring for my beautiful children. I got them through their childhoods with joy, but a firm hand where it counted. I’m lost now that they’re adults but I count on them to communicate their boundaries. They do. But the years when my kids were in the house were wonderful !! Their noise was happy noise. When I’d glitch out and snap, I apologized. We had music and laughter, their friends, I’m telling you it was great.

Have you checked out Toren wolfs Mum's take on this. There is a heart breaking KZbin of her talking about realising why she struggled so much, as she was not diagnosed until adulthood. Her youngest, Toren is Autistic and sometimes they do videos together.

I think they sell things like a pin for kids to have their toys in and then you can slowly teach them to keep them in the pen when they want to play with them except for things like the laptop or whatever they're using like the tablet and then you're actually doing the parenting work too they get to learn how to keep tidy as they go along and you get a more orderly existence

I'm sorry to hear you're roughing it solo now, that is so hard with kids, and sad to hear, I hope you are getting on mentally okay. Both me and my daughter are autistic and we have 5 cats and 2 big dogs and needless to say it can be chaotic. We also have caged birds and I have chickens with an indoor pet rooster (and he needs a girlfriend so he's got a hen with him), so there is ALWAYS noise in my house. My daughter always has some noise on her phone or tablet, at least one cat is terrorizing my finches, the dogs are either ripping through the house (can't let them loose to run outside where I live) or trying to get the cats (who hate them) to play or begging (loudly) for food. I don't have noise-canceling headphones, so my escape is either stepping out for a smoke or playing loud music with earphones. I have alarms set for lunch and supper and for when I need to go feed my outside animals, and the animals will certainly (and loudly) tell me if I'm running late.Thankfully my daughter is a teenager now and can put pre-made food in the microwave if she's hungry so I don't need to worry so much about her anymore. But all my other animals, it's like having a hundred children in my house, and everyone knows all cats are autistic and all dogs are ADHD. I frequently lose my head. Hang in there, Dan. I hope things get easier for you and your babies, and you'll be in my prayers.
