Honda seems to be one of the few companies in the industry who is listening to customers. What an improvement to the previous gen! On a different note, I watched a lot of reviews on the new Civic and this has to be by far the best one. Great, honest review.

The advance is better quality than the sport trim, I’ve test drove both and would have the advance over the sport purely because exterior styling is the same par the diamond cut wheels, but the interior feels really high quality and does feel a step up. I am 6’3 and sat in the back of both to see the difference in headroom with the sunroof on the advanced, there wasn’t any difference, I slouched down slightly and still had knee room (not much but it’s there). Great car, far better than the previous. Great review of this car👍🏻

I've got the sport, and couldn't be happier. Absolutely love the looks of the black rearviews and tires in contrast with pearl white. And more than enough interior quality for my needs, but I understand you may like the advanced better.

I chose the Sport as the trim to go for as it is the best for value and standard equipment. Of course if you want the leather, sunroof, sound system etc then of course upgrade to the Advance.

I went for Sport, fully digital gauges and pano sunroof didn't seem worth 4k difference for me. Also I despise chrome window trim on Advance, black just seems much better.

Excellent and comprehensive review, thank you. Without advocating other reviewers, have a look at the vanarama video. It includes (@3:45 in) Ko Yamamoto from Honda explaining how the eCVT system works. I sell these things for a living and the very mention of a CVT has customers eyes rolling in the back of their heads. After I tell them it has no gearbox and (to quote ko) cvt stands for the continously variable transmission....of torque. What is continuously varied is the amount of electric current being sent to the electric motor. The drive just says it all and so glad you enjoyed it.

Same here Alasdair, went to trest drive the Advance, but decided the Sport has everything I actually need, and isn't missing anything that I absolutely must have. I was blown away by the drive during my two hours in the car, so much so that I placed an order as soon as I got back to the dealership. Sport in sonic grey pearl, due 1st July and I can't wait. Currently I drive an Audi A3 35 TFSi SLine Stronic which is really great, but the Civic is much nicer to drive IMHO.

@A. Biscuit The wait was fine for me, it coincides with the end of my current lease. I'm leaving Audi after 5 A4's and the A3, not becasue they aren't great cars, but the A4 is too big, and the A3's interior has been ruined by the new fangled touch screen controls and cheaper plastics. Touch screens are no good for me as I have a tremor!

Great review, thank you! A lot of people comment that this car is expensive. They are mostly legacy Civic or Corolla customers. I think this clouds their judgement. I'm coming from the Golf 8, and as a 4 time owner dating back 14 years I now think the VWs are overpriced. Scanning the hatch universe as a brand neutral buyer for a well equipped hybrid that is engaging to drive I found the civic advance compelling. Price wise it is very competitive, similar to the Corollla, but I happen to prefer the Honda. I ordered the Advance....a similarly equipped Golf would be 1000s more and less economical. Every time a manufacturer reinvents a model you hear those who say its expensive. Their opinion would be different if it had a different badge. That's just a risk manufacturers have to take if they want to move with the times and keep innovating. The civic has already won awards and I think it will hold its value well. Order books are also pretty full so it looks like a winner all round. I'm looking forward to getting mine. Thanks for reading!

Hi Andrew, Thank you for your comment and glad you have enjoyed the review. I think price wise, with what is on offer as standard kit and with the hybrid system, the Civic is priced very well. It does just undercut the Corolla. It has been a while since I have reviewed an VW product but I can see the hesitation as they are more expensive. The Civic looks to be one of the top choices in the segment and as you have said, has already won awards.

I will also add that Honda have always been reliable, the models i have owned. Not sure if the same can be said for VW. Also Honda still using physical buttons for the interior is a big plus, unlike German cars.

Well Bear i had my mind on trading in my FK8 for the FL5. Had a test drive in the hybrid, just for a laugh, bet you can guess the rest. Took me completely by surprise. Really impressed with smoothness, acceleration and comfort. Getting the Advanced with illumination pack, coming in March. Subscribed.

Nice thorough review. One minor detail to point out, though, not all models come with 18" wheels. The base Elegance model comes standard with 17s. The only downside, I feel, to the Sport is that unlike the Elegance and Advance, it comes with a dark roof lining, which makes the cabin feel a bit more oppressive, imo. Easy enough to live with, certainly, but personally, I would've prefered the option of a lighter interior.

Very thorough and honest review, well done! My thoughts were almost the same when I test drove the Sport trim. Corolla doesn't even compare, this is at least one level up. Ordered mine and awaiting till April hopefully.

First civic I like - rear end especially. Interior is pure old Audi a3. Nicer than a Golf tho I’d rather an Octavia .

The Honda looks like a great car. I’ll be in the market for a new car when my lease goes back next year and I’m after a petrol self charging hybrid. Im torn between the Civic and the Corolla estate. I need the practicality of an estate ideally but I can’t say I’m blown away by the Corolla. Im disappointed by the Honda’s warranty though, it’s well under par against its rivals from Kia, Hyundai and Toyota. I wouldn’t like to own a hybrid out of warranty and the Toyotas 10 yr warranty shows how confident they are in the longevity of their cars. It’s a shame because I really like the Civic

I know it's no consolation, but the Civic drivetrain has a 5 year warranty. A 10 Yr warranty is a breakthrough term, but small print needs a closer look. Kia's warranty has a number of t's & c's to qualify for the full 7 year term and even then not all is covered. £399 gets u a full 5 year warranty on the Civic and 5 years roadside assistance.

I’ve had Civics for some years and I was going to change it for the Yaris but I saw your short summary before this main review came out and you hinted that this had a great drive. Well it’s made me stick with Honda I now have an Advance trim in red on order which I’ll pick up from Honda Johnston Milton Keynes I can’t wait!!

@@AutoBears it most certainly did. I’ve had a mk 8 civic, then a mk 10. I was about to get a Yaris but your review highlighted that this new mk11 was a real step up in every way from the old model, that the money spending wasn’t actually that much more compared to its rivals plus it’s such a good drive convinced me to get another. I’m so excited I can’t wait, I wonder if the matrix headlights work well on the advance, as my mk10 sport could sometimes be a bit delayed with its adaptive beam.

Probably an unfair question but I’m resetting the cruise control each time. Even within a journey. Sometimes I can’t help but touch the pedals. I do have a handbook but never get on that well with them 😂

I guess in other markets where you can still spec the 1.5turbo or 2.0N/A it does compete with the Golf and Focus. Uk market only gets the Corolla rival unfortunately

Just to note currently for 2024 model year Blind Spot Monitoring has been stripped out for all models except the Type R. Don’t know if that’s because of a supply issue or cost cutting?

Great review. What’s the noise isolation like inside the cabin? Reading other reviews they made a point about it being louder than average and your mic seems to pick it up to a certain extent - your thoughts?

German Autoclub ADAC criticised the high noise level in the cabin, especially on higher speeds lots of wind noise...the Civic measured over 70 dB at 130 km per hour...while the Focus, Golf or Leon all around 2 db quiter at that speed...sounds not much,but these are world's of differences.

Sorry another couple of questions, if anyone could help please. From the numerous videos I’ve seen, there doesn’t appear to be any controls on the steering wheel to answer/hang up a phone call. If paired with Bluetooth, do you have to answer the call by touching the central multimedia screen or is there another way? Secondly, does the car have auto-lock for the doors when the speed exceeds a certain speed e.g. 10mph? thanks in advance #firstworldproblems

The button (wheel) on the left hand side of the steering wheel below the volume control and is also used to control the multi information display. Simply push it in to answer/hang up a call.

As for auto lock, no that does not happen. You can lock all doors using the switch next to the window controls.

At the moment it’s just the 3 trim levels mentioned in the video. However that could change in the future. The US does have an “Si”trim with a different engine.

With a full tank it had around 450 miles of range. I will note the Civic does have a small tank so that is pretty good!

Yeah the tank is only 40 litres the watch out low fuel first warning comes in pretty early. The mpg I’ve been getting in first 100 miles is 62 which is awesome. Mostly longer journeys which may help. I say may help as the mpg seems amazing at low speeds as well as cruising. Done a load of driving on winding single tracks and the mpg seems better that faster trips - hybrid tech??

I have had one and since sold it. Had it just under a year. Fantastic car. I now have a Tesla model y which is a whole other beast. Only reason I swapped is because of the servicing costs and I got my money back after a year's ownership. Quids in

Only problem with it was the right door speaker sounded like it had something slightly loose and had a rattle when the bass was turned up. And yeah the safety features where a bit twitchy. But if you set it to cruise and turn them all on and let it do its thing then it literally drives itself better than my Tesla does. Tesla's systems are very twitchy at the moment and need calming down

My HR-V e:HEV sat nav is brilliant1 What are you talking about?? Completely flat back seats?? Doesn't look like it to me, or is it the camera angle. Nearly all reviewers seem to be completely unaware of what 'completely flat' means. Apparently a 10 degree upward slope is completely flat as far as most are concerned e:HEV HR-V does have completely flat back seats!

Unfortunately Evelyn, the Civic does not have the magic seats. But the Jazz and HR-V still do.

Evelyn. Magic seats ended when the 10th Gen Civic was launched in 2017. Honda chose to move from single torsion beam to fully independent rear suspension for better ride quality over magic seats. Whilst the magic seats provided a great deal of flexibility, a better driving car was always going to be the way forward.

Hahahaha... Overall I liked your review. But.... the funny part was when you were disappointed over the glove box because it is filled with locking wheel nuts and user manual. What? Well those item in golve box are not bolted to the damn box. Just remove them. That was the stupidest reason I have ever heard about disappointed of a glove box.

These are items you get with your car and there’s nowhere else to put them. So people keep them in the glovebox. If you remove your locking wheel nuts and you need to replace a tyre, you’re in trouble. I’m sorry Paso but this is the stupidest comment I’ve had regarding that issue. Big bear hugs.

@@AutoBears I have a Hyundai i10 with even smaller boot. But I still have room in the boot to have my instruction manual and locking nuts under the boot floor. Stop complaining about 2 item that can be removed from glove box. You sounded like one of those Karens that give bad reviews to a coffee shop because the weather was raining when they left the shop. When you complain about stupid thing like that, your whole reviews authenticity comes at risk, when people thinks what else of your complains is real. You really did not understand the tech, did you then. It has NOT got an automatic gearbox but no gearbox at all. It's NOT a CVT. And it's NOT 184hp combined but 184hp from the e-motor. The ICE's power is about 145hp. And you'll have to watch professor Kelly of Weber University's video to get it, but combined power is 212 hp. At the end of the day, it's a bit silly to be critical and... ignorant at once.

You are right about the gearbox but I have just looked and EVERY review and report including Honda say the combined power output is 184 so what official source are you getting 212 from?

You are correct with the power output Dave. Honda confirmed that figure when us sales people went to training event. The figure that blows the opposition is not bhp, but torque. 315Nm of it, which makes all the difference.

All of Honda’s promotional material only claim 184bhp because the engine is only used to charge the battery and directly power the wheels when cruising above 70mph. If more power is required at any stage, the 184bhp motor takes over and the engine is, again, only used to charge the battery. At no stage does the 184bhp and 143bhp engine put their combined power to the front wheels. I hope that clarifies.

Alberto is right. Like for like it is slightly cheaper than the Corolla but don’t forget that this has a hybrid setup which will increase the price of the car compared to a regular ICE car.

Sorry Dave, Elegance was always getting 17 inch rims from the outset. That said, they are diamond cut and look decent. The original 10th gen SE wheels were a bit naff, with the 2020 facelft ones being much better.
