Autodesk Maya 2018 Beginner Tutorial - How to create a simple Character Rig Part 2/3
Importance of Joint orientation : scottxiong.com/...
This video shows, step by step, instructions on how to create a simple character rig. This video shows how to start the rigging process by creating controls or controllers which are used to control our joints and pose our character; we also go over how to skin the character to the joints. Rigging is a crucial step to getting your characters ready to be animated. This video teaches the basics and clear, easy to follow, steps that any 3D enthusiast can follow. This video has been made specifically for beginners, but can be followed by any knowledge level.

Some advice, add a root bone that the hip bone connects to, this makes hierarchy select super simple. Also, for binding this works better than selecting all joints as you only need the parent node to skin bind.

You should explain more not only WHAT to do but also WHY you do this and what does it do. For example, I don't know why you did the hip controler differently than arms/legs controlers.

I think grouping Ik Handle may solve the issue with rotation. I have three IK handles in leg. First one (Pelvic to ankle)does basic one which is from , second(Ankle to ball) for ball roll and third one(Ball to toe) is for toe. My groups are as follows Group 1: IK 1,2,3 pivot at knee Group 2: IK 1,2,3 pivot at toe for toe tapping Group 3: IK 1,2 pivot at Ball Group 4: IK 3 pivot at ball where IK 2 and 3 are single plane solver 1 is rotate-plane solver

Hey there! First of all, thanks a lot for this tutorial, I have to do a humanoid rig and animation for a university project, so this came in very handy. Now I have been following every step without a problem up until the spine. When I first tried to create an IK Spline Handle everything upwards of the hip got rotated 90°. After some research I seemingly fixed that problem by aligning all of my spine joints into a straight line insead of the anatomically more correct S-shape. Now that I'm done setting up all the controllers I noticed that when I rotate the hip controller on the X-axis, it seems to rotate the spine on the Z/Y-axis as well, so that the right shoulder and hip are higher than the left and the right knee isn't bent. I'm not sure if this is too specific a question, but I hope that you might be able to tell me what the problem is. Thank you in advance and greetings from Germany :)

+xBlackSandDevilx hmmn, inconsistencies with rotations could have to do with the orientation of your joints or the controller not being oriented the same as the joint it's controlling. I would need to see the file in order to reallt figure out what's going on. If you want to feel free to send me the file through my website and I can take a look when I have time.

I looked at the orientations of my joints again and you're right, something messed those up, especially the pelvis joint. Since trying to figure out how to fix this would probably take longer I just redid everything, being careful not to mess up the orientations again, and now everything is working perfectly :)

Lets say you have two object A and B where B is parented to A. Normally, when You rotate x axis of A, B also rotates in x axis but with connection editor you can make object B rotate or y axis instead of x-axis. plus you can control large number of attributes including user made.

The legs REALLY shouldn't be made to have rotation axis following same rotational directions, because if you want to rotate for example both legs outwards, they wouldn't both move outwards, but instead move in the same direction. Also the Root/Pelvis bones rotation is pointing upwards, and not matching the bones orientation. Really destructive rigging, and very bad practices.

If you click on the ikSpline in the outliner, then click on AttributeEditor found on the right side of the screen, You should be able to drop down an IK Solver Attributes tab then an Advanced Twist Controls. Enable this then select ObjectUp from the WorldUpType dropdown. Then type in the name of the controller in the WorldUpObject text field. You may need to change the ForwardAxis and UpAxis fields to get the orientation right. knowledge.autodesk.com/support/maya-lt/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2017/ENU/MayaLT/files/GUID-FF44609B-EECA-4FA2-A335-EA271BB7BE5A-htm.html

At 22:55, I followed the steps by creating a chest control and connecting the Rotate Y to the Twist of the spine's IK Spline. However, when I move the chest control, the only attribute that affects the rig is the rotate Y (the chest control's other rotate and translate attributes don't do anything). Did you do another orient or point constraint on the chest joint or spine's IK spine? I'm clearly missing something. :-\

If anyone have problems with Master CTRL orientation, I think I've found a temporary solution: • Parent everything for Master CTRL except model. You would probably use master crtl for displacing your character on scene so this method will save every transformation at zero except for the master ctrl itself. For mesh distortion at hands/legs connection with body: • Parent ikHandles to its controllers so it wouldn't ruin your mesh while you rotate them. If anyone have found better solution, please, write it down below ❤️

If you create an IK handle on one side, will the handle stay if you THEN mirror the joints?

Thank you very much, this is very helpful. I had an issue after binding skin: it “breaks” the mesh (as in cracks the characters skin). What should I do to fix it? Thank you for your vids!

I've had the problem too. Try merging the vertexes in your model. The "skin" might be in separate polygons when read by the joints.

How does the chest control connect to it, if no instruction is assigned? It just proved that it connected to the IK_Spine.

Hey, so I'm having some major problems, and I'm not quite sure how to fix them. Everything was going great right up until the slpine bit. I got it all hooked up, but now I can't connect the controllers for the hip and chest to make them pivot the right way. Like, the hip just twist my model instead of moving it side to side, and the chest only pivots when I rotate the controller on the Y axis. All my joints should be facing the right way, but I'm just getting irritated, and I can't find anyone else to help me

Hey, can someone help? I'm rigging my mesh and whenever I added the IK handle after binding the skin, when I lift up his leg, the knee opens up to the side and progressively swings backwards as it's rising. I did the orientation correctly as far as I know but after attempting to fix it (all my x's are towards the children and the Y's are up) my legs are still doing this wonky weird thing. What am I doing wrong :( EDIT: Nevermind, I found a video that showed me how to fix it. But now I'm having an issue with the whole Rotate roll connection; followed it and yet its not rotating at all except for a swivel

I'm having a problem where when I apply the ik to the arm it bends the wrong way. I haven't found a way to orient the bend so it bends like it should at the elbow. Is there an easy fix for this?
