The MG4 Trophy does have a under floor storage! the floor cover you lifted at 9:26 folds in at the edges and will then sit under the higher position allowing your suitcases to fit. The bigger battery of the extended range doesn't effect the boot.

As a company car driver, there’s only one of these I’d get and that’s the MG4. Whilst I like the 308’s looks and the Megan’s refinement, the MG4 is £200 a month cheaper on my car scheme than the Peugeot (£7200 less over 3 years.) and £150 a month cheaper than the Megane (£5,400 less over 3 years). It’s just not worth paying the extra over the MG4 which is a perfectly good car.

We’ve had an MG4 Trophy for a year, and it’s lovely to drive. It is dark inside, but it also means people can’t look casually in the back of the if you’ve got a full load of luggage, etc.. The DAB radio occasionally cuts out, which is a pain. My wife doesn’t like the lane assist, but I do, so that is a marmite.

I got the MG4 Trophy non extended and im leasing it (i only use the car for work as a insurance appraiser) It here in Norway cost me 0 upfront and i have 25K kilometers pr year in the contract including top insurance and i pay 500£ pr month. That price is HALF of what a polestar 2 would cost me. The car is perfect for me and works very well after i had every possible software update for it. The peugot here is 200£ more a month here too and the megane is almost 300£ more here.

Great review guys, lots of great info. I test drove the meganne and Mg4 multiple times before taking the plunge on the Mg4. For me the decision making came down to the rear wheel drive and a noticeable power uplift. Then the extra leg and feet room in the rear were also more important than the better looking interior. Both great cars wasn't an easy desicion. 3500 miles in with the mg I'd make the same desicion. The car is addictive still love it every time I get in it. Keep the reviews coming, love the channel.

When we were still driving on gas, it didn’t matter. The gasoline went into the tank at the same speed. The size of the tank determined the time, but in case of differences it was at most a few minutes. It’s different with ev’s. Not only the charging capacity is different, but also the charging characteristic. These factors determine how quickly you get a hundred kilometers in the battery. The criteria used in the test need an update!

My range rant: 85% of people avg 40km per day, maybe 3 times a year 250km. I can not drive 2hrs without a pee break and coffee. Are you all mad £37K to £43K. I have had my MG4 51 Excite LFP (Camden Grey) for 4 months now. 2,000km has cost me ZERO, 3hrs free electrons at night from Electric provider. Cost incl ORC's and Govt EV rebate was £19,300 pounds, with 8 year warranty. That is 18K difference to your MG4 long range NCM battery, I could buy 2 for 1 practically. New Zealand based.

I am happy to drive for several hours in one run. With EV those days are gone but I will get used to it. An extra 30-40 miles on many journeys will make a big difference for me however. One less stop for S.Coast to Manchester for example and I can use Tesla charging with membership when I need it. I refuse to pay .85p per kWh as should we all - stop the rip off merchants in their tracks. Extended range makes sense for me - London and back on one charge.

The Megane is very refined for it's price bracket. I've done 9,000 miles since June 23. I have not had any faults or issues. I have had people coming up to me in public and saying what a brilliant looking car it is. On the downside the range and efficiency is not a patch on a Hyundai Kona with the same size battery. On a good day in the summer really nursing the economy I can get 240 miles of range. On the same route, which is Sheffield to Bristol using the Fosse Way the Kona could do 320 miles of range. In the winter and over the past couple of weeks when I've driven to South Wales and back in 1 to 4 C temp. range, the Megane can only do about 160 miles.

I'd like to review your review as there are plenty of reviewers out there. Respectfully, I think you need to up your game. Too slow, too much "old men" talking and too much about your opinions. Not enough information and some of that was wrong. Also, at no point did you actually show the cars, other than from the back or the front, pretty ridiculous, frankly. Also, the batteries are a major concern for EVs, you need to talk more about them, including the type of batteries used in each. Are they Ternary, LFP or even Sodium ION (in the future). The range difference was huge, putting these cars in different categories, but you'd never know that from this. Also, finally safety, how do they measure in crash tests?

Brilliant review!.....The Megane is hand down the best car, best built with premium materials, the best tech!.....great sum up...when you lock it and walk away, you turn around and go "wow-that's some car!" Phone tech is the most advanced and updated on the planet! Well done Renault turning to Google. I reserched every EV on the market, and settled for the final 3 choice being the Megane, Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3. No competition! The Megane is easily the best, with French flair. The Tesla is so sterile and poorly built. The Polestar is so obese. The Megane is the 3rd lightest EV on the market (after the Mini and Fiat 500, helped by the use of aluminium and carbon fibre. No rear visability? No problem. The Megane has a rear-view-mirror wide-angle camera - brilliant! The range is 280 miles but the best I've done is 302 miles (and I haven't even had it over the summer months yet). Never trust the mileage range, go by the percentage. Mine showed 201 mile range, and I did a 36 mile journey, and the mileage range showed 202.....work that one out! Oh yes, plus Renault say the 0-60 time is 7.5sec, but many reviews have timed it at 6.9sec (that's mini cooper S territory but with that lovely added instant torque!). How typically French, under-playing!😢

Heating controls for the MG4 ARE available directly from the main screen on my SE LR. It looks like on the Trophy the space where the heating controls are displayed is taken up by the in built sat nav (which isn't present on the lower price cars). Plus I can put the heating controls directly on the steering wheel controls (as you can on the Trophy) which they did point out).

Good review, the things that never get mentioned in any review. Do the side mirrors drop when reversing to see the curb and protect the wheels. The Megane can drop the mirror, didn’t check the other two. Again, I’ve been using the Renault app to pre heat the cabin, but I do think you can in the other two as well. The price of the e-Magane is a good $8,000 more than the MG4 Essence here in Australia. They are all fine EVs. It’s just nice to know there are 3 excellent cars. It depends on how much you are willing to spend. We opted for the MG4 Essence, but the 64Kwh not the 77Kwh version which is more expensive for very little extra range.

Landed on AutoEV researching MG4 Trophy LR and Mégane Techno. Think this is a very informative video (as are other related videos). What this comes down to in my situation is this: I want to buy a used EV. I want to spend maximum £20k ish. I love the Mégane looks, quality etc but I love the (what appears to be good) warranty on the MG. I worry buying used about not having a manufacturer warranty or it running out soon after purchase. I’ve moved on from looking at e208 due to its range. What do I do? Is it worth compromising on looks and interior and infotainment etc and getting the MG4 which is fully kitted but not as pretty/comfy/clunky infotainment? How are the Meganes holding up reliability wise? Such a big step to take and I just don’t know what to do!!!!! Sorry for essay but it’s crunch time for me. I want comfort/range/bit of go - that’s how I ended up looking at these 2 cars. Thanks in advance.

I test drove a Megane E-tech and thought it was a lovely car from a drivers perspective. The dashboard is the clearest, lots of functions and the fit and finish was really good. I did find it a bit fiddly as well though and the 3 stalks on the same side was really off putting for me. Drive wise it was also very refined and perfectly fine, however, I found the MG4 even better to drive and more fun. It also felt different enough from a typical ICE car which is what I was looking for. The MG4 also has 2 favourite buttons which you can easily map the aircon to, I've no idea why so many reviewers miss this point. Another thing that put me off the Megane is the, quite frankly, horribly designed boot. It may be bigger on paper than the MG4 but it was so awkward to get things in and out of. I tried getting a set of golf clubs in to the Megane, I think all cars would struggle without folding a seat down, but getting the clubs back out of the boot was horrible and gave my back a real struggle due to the depth to the lip of the boot. No issue at all with the MG4, flat boot, easy to get luggage in and out. If you have big kit bags like hockey etc, you really need to make sure you try it with the Megane. Also the MG4 is bigger for passengers in the back than the Megane.

All of you forgot to mention the back seating and from my experience in a family car is as important as the driver side, try going on a long trip when the people in the back drive you crazy because they are uncomfortable. the range and efficiency also bring down the scoring for the Megan for me. And last of all if you compare lease prices for them the Megan is much more expensive than the MG that for many people will be a factor.

Regarding the KERS or Re-gen in cars, I realised there are a lot of hyping up for “one pedal drive” from a lot of car reviewers. I’m not an engineer but I’m just wondering how efficient a car re-gen system actually is? Instead of converting the kinetic energy back to electricity, wouldn’t it be more efficient just to keep using the kinetic energy already created by the motors to keep the car moving? It’ll also give you a smoother ride without sudden stops. I drive the MG ZS EV and always put the re-gen on the lowest setting.

There's no need to set the regen to anything other than the lowest setting, as the brake pedal has a regen phase before applying the actual brakes. However, I like using the regen paddles on my megane to slow down in traffic because it feels like I'm actually doing something and gives me back a bit of the feeling of a manual transmission. And it's good for controlling speed on hills. Best to turn it off completely on the motorway though, as higher levels will make your brake lights flash every time you ease off the accelerator.

@@djtaylorutube I personally think it would be safer if they link the re-gen to the brake like they do in Toyota Prius rather then putting it on the accelerator, knowing how rapid most EVs can accelerate.

@@danielho9753 I'm not sure what the reference to acceleration speed has but being on the accelerator has the advantage that in an emergency, the instant the foot is removed from the accelerator, the car is already at max regen, before the foot has even transferred to the brake pedal. What that translates into as far as quicker emergency stopping though, I don't think I've seen that illustrated beyond suggestion. I'd be interested to find out.

@@djtaylorutube if you’re going downhill or navigating in a tight city car park in a petrol car you would let the car roll forward slowly with your foot ready on the brake to slow or stop the car. On one pedal drive cars you would have your foot on the accelerator. With the acceleration speed of a Tesla model 3 for example, one slip on the foot could mean you’re going 20-30mph into a wall instead of 5-10 in a petrol car. I agree with you that high re-gen could be useful in situations where you need to change speed rapidly like on the track. For everyday driving, when you’re going fast all the time on the motorway, or going slow in traffic I don’t see the merits of driving with one pedal drive.

An interesting review (shame about the sound issues). I do think EV reviews should put a bit more emphasis on the actually obtained battery efficiency rather than just mention WLTP figures because, though no-one believes WLTP, it is becoming clear that some EVs are far less efficient in the wild than others. (I accept that you would need to have the car for at least a few days to make this kind of assessment). The Stellantis group cars all seem to be pulling the "look how much more efficient we have made the battery usage" when, to a large extent, all they are doing is significantly dropping the power output. Interestingly, from all I have seen and read, in "real world" use, drivers are getting nothing like the efficiency Stellantis are claiming (perhaps drivers are being heavier on the pedal because of the lowish power output?). I have seen your Scotland drive in the Megane and the miles per Kwh was disappointing. I do not own, but have driven the MG4 Trophy (not extended range) and that car did seem to be getting reasonably close to its expected range (allowing that all EVs will suffer a drop in efficiency in Winter.

Very good review but I would have rather seen a comparison with VW ID.3 or Cupra Born to the Peugeot. I think it easy to dismiss the Peugeot 308 but the other three are more difficult to split. Really comes down to what best meets your preferences. I opted for the Megane over the Born. MG undoubtedly best value but Peugeot out of place in the EV field.

Title is wrong, had you said "Best below £44,000" then you'd be ok but you're missing the best selling family 5 door hatchback which is now £44,990 as base spec and given that one of the cars here as reviewed is £41,690 then you can't claim that the Model Y is in a vastly different price bracket. Of course it all depends on what the car is used for and what someone wants from it but the exclusion is glaring.

I looked at the MG when I was purchasing a 2nd car for towing ( a Subaru Forester 2.0d, 4wd, 2000kg towing capacity, potential 1000km range, 1/2 of the price of these cars for a 3 year old with low mileage ) and I thought the MG looked strange and the quality was badly lacking.. That Peugeot is far too expensive and cramped inside. The stupid Peugeot steering wheel is a design flaw for me.. Rear space appears very limited. The Megane seems the best of the three.. I'm not an EV person but I'd still go for a lightly used Tesla over any of these 3 vehicles. I'd only purchase used due to EVs crashing in price, so my criteria would be different.. Not planning on buying an EV anytime soon, but I'm not an EV hater...

Hard to justify that conversation when so many things are made in, or have components from China. Did you kow that BYD builds nearly a third of iPads for Apple? How would you know if the one you bought came from there or not? They also supply a fifth of all cell phone batteries in the world. I'm not ducking the issue, and you have every right to bring it ip, its just that the world is a small place when it comes to commerce. Let's not forget how top clothing brands used to use cheap labour from the Far East when they made big profits from selling upmarket sports clothes. If you take that stance (and it is a worthy one that you are entitled to) then you really have to dig deep into every consumer product you buy.

Very though provoking review of three good vehicles. Only one winner for me though, but it's not featured here. It's the MG4 Long Range, not the Extended range where you get around 40 odd miles more for an extra £4k or so - not worth it from my chair. Whilst I think the reviews are fair in many respects, there's a trick missed with the price of the MG4 - a smidge under 27k for an SE standard is a game changer. The Tourer trim has the extra features such as the 360 degree camera which I couldn't do without, and the Tourer Long Range is around 33k with deals available from many sources. If we want folk to embrace the world of EV, we simply have to make the cars more affordable, and that means perhaps to start with a little reduction in quality interior-wise to make the competition sit up and bring their prices down too. 40k price tag is not going to win people over to EV ownership. I collect my MG Long Range trophy tomorrow, so I guess I'm a little biased. I like the look of the Renault, but sub 40k price bracket for the higher trim.......too expensive! Colour wise, the Volcano Orange is striking, so you can guess which colour I ordered!!!!!

@jasonrhl The battery drains faster from acceleration than any gain you get from regen. This means in a town and country roads where you have to decelerate all the time, gains you get back from regen is a big plus, but at motor way speeds, where you may just lift your foot off the accelerator but not intend to slow down to any great degree, having regen on will mean you have to accelerate more to get up to motorway speeds, meaning you lose all the gain you got from the regen, plus all the extra energy you had to use to speed up where as it you let the car coast, its more efficient as you don’t have to accelerate as much to maintain 70

I have had an EV for 7 3/4 years. At first I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. That is until reality struck. Short range, extremely poor infrastructure, very slow journey times and trips filled with charger and range anxiety, range affected by weather, particularly temperature, was bad enough. Now, I am faced with 33% degradation after only 39k miles, and this is the final nail in the concept for me. My considered opinion after many years of EV ownership is that they are just not fit for purpose. The technology doesn't seem to be getting any better either with modern ev's like the id range with liquid cooling and the latest battery chemistry also degrading badly also. I will never buy another EV ever again, and by the falls in second-hand prices, neither will most other people.

@spsmith45 Nobody gets a replacement battery with degradation. My Car is a Nissan leaf 30 kwhr 6.6 charger in Arctic white, made in Sunderland. The warranty says that at ' Nissan's discretion ' individual cells will be repaired to return the battery bars to 9 battery bars out of the 12 originally, within 8 years or 100'000 miles. To get this, you have to pay for a battery check by them evidentally and had the battery checked yearly beforehand also. My vehicle has 8 battery bars left and if they honour the warranty, which they don't have to at all by the inclusion of the word 'discretion' they could return my Car with one battery bar after me perhaps wasting money on an expensive battery check. In other words not worth taking the chance for such little return. My wife now uses it only as a local shopping trolley, tethered to our octopus go charger tethered range. Exactly the type of use EV milk floats of old were used and all that they are any good for.

The Leaf 30kWh is notorious for battery degradation, second only to the early 24's with their 'dodgy' battery chemistry. Not comparable to other EVs.
