The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 Sedan (~$169,950 CAD as specced, $133,655 USD as specced) is a luxurious new EV that aims to raise the bar for what luxury means in an electric vehicle. Inside, it has what Mercedes proudly calls the Hyperscreen. A 56 inch wide piece of glass that houses multiple different screens that are seamlessly integrated together. This makes for a gorgeous design for the driver and their passengers, and it combines extremely well with the vibrant ambient lighting. But interior aesthetics aside, how does the EQS 580 perform as a luxury EV? And with an ‘S’ in its name, can the EQS match the comfort and style of the legendary S-Class? Thomas and James aim to find out! We hope you enjoy the episode. SUBSCRIBE!

That crossover with LUCID Air is so satisfying to watch. Especially if you have watched the Air video already. It's like those amazing Easter eggs, throw backs in the big franchise movies.

I find it telling that they gushed about the Lucid while bashing the EQS after obviously driving each on the same day. Most other EQS reviews have been at least modestly positive, some quite so. The Lucid must have made quite an impression.

@@Miata822 Meh, they like the drama... They like these outrageous claims. They said a Genesis G80 drives better than an M5 competition... If an EQS drives like shit because of its weight, the Lucid drives equally as bad... And it lacks all the other amenities and features that the Merc has.

I legit saw one at an intersection while it was dark and went “that civic has some stupid huge wheels” And then I saw the Mercedes badge and was a little confused. It looks almost exactly like an 8th gen civic sedan at a glance. I don’t really consider that too much of a downside personally, cause the styling is great in spite of the commuterish silhouette (and I don’t really care about “road presence” or whatever), but it is pretty funny.

Mercedes isnt oblivious. They're purposely trying to push conventional cars as long as they can while also technically jumping into the inevitable electric powered future. They also know electric car buyers don't necessarily want something that looks too conventional, which this very much doesn't. This is them doing their toes in the water with a decent first attempt. This is the electric luxury sedan for those willing to go electric but not quite willing to go for a vehicle from a start-up automaker. But please, please, don't let any of this distract you from the fact that the Cincinnati Bengals still don't have an indoor practice facility!

Not to mention you can get the EQS with LiDAR and level 3 self-driving, i.e. it drives autonomously on highways and you are legally permitted to do something else completely, like watching a move or reading a newspaper. I have nowhere near the disposable income to buy an S Class or this vehicle, but I love watching your reviews. I feel like the issue is that an electric power-train adds so much cost it is hard to keep the cost where they want it and provide all the luxuries that an S Class should have.
@sv650nyc7
@sv650nyc7 2 жыл бұрын
I would think that is a temporary problem, as an EV uses only 1/5 the parts of a conventional car, once the manufacturing capacity has increased, they should be able to make them cheaper than ICE cars.

@@sv650nyc7 I agree with you, but it doesn't change the fact that if you are comparing this to an ICE car today that you can get more stuff for your $ with an ICE car than an EV. A consumer would need to value the EV technology over the luxury to buy it.

Other channels have put quite a bit more effort into reviewing this vehicle, e.g. Bjørn Nyland. He has measured the interior noise and has found the car to be exceptionally quiet. He also tested its range which is well beyond the weird US EPA range in real life. In Germany the car had no problems to go the entire way from Munich to Berlin ( ca. 360 Miles) on the motorway at a speed of ca. 75 mph on a single charge.
@doughope761
@doughope761 2 жыл бұрын
The thing is when Nyland is driving that car on the highway you can hear the road noise when he saying how quiet the car is. It's not quiet enough for it not to make a bunch of racket in the middle of his video. Also he criticizes the headlights on that vehicle. I don't think Throttle House gave this review short shrift at all. When they have to fly out to a city for a hosted demo event the automobile manufacturer limits their time which did not happen in the case of Mr. Nyland. I don't think he did a more thorough review at all and perhaps wasn't quite as honest with his criticism.

Thank you for being fair in your assessment. The EQS is the most disappointing car I've driven and I was shocked that Doug Demuro praised it so much. Throttle House I can trust
@moogle68
@moogle68 Жыл бұрын
Doug is just a bumbling nerd that got very lucky with his timing. He did spreadsheet work for Porsche, made a few moderately funny videos, and eventually got so full of himself that he stopped actually trying to do funny/fun videos and sticks to doing "quirky" reviews after doing practically no prep-research whatsoever. When you compare the quality of the content and the effort put in by Throttle House to his videos it becomes clear very quickly that Doug has no idea what he's doing and has let his coincidental/lucky success get to his head. It's fun seeing him get genuinely nerdy and excited sometimes, but he simply doesn't deserve the level of success that he has enjoyed IMO. The amount of effort Doug puts in per video and quality of the resulting content is just miles behind what almost all of the other big car review channels put out. He's just driving to meet up with owners and then putting his phone on a tripod to record his first nerdy impressions of whatever he's reviewing. It's cool to see someone being genuine and all, but far from unique and a bit of a joke compared to professional filming, editing, script-writing, creating enjoyable improv banter, and coming up with original jokes/skits that are genuinely funny. Sorry I went on a rant, I actually watch most of Doug's vids as well, but ever since discovering and binging on Throttle House's content a couple years ago, I've begun to get frustrated with how little Doug seems to try and improve by comparison. He still doesn't know the square root of jack shit about sound systems and still usually completely ignores them. And recently he's been fumbling his sentences up really often, especially for someone whose whole gig is basically being a pedantic nerd. It's like he doesn't even care enough to just try the sentence over again so that it makes a more sense or to avoid sounding repetitive/unprepared/unsure, which is ridiculous because it's not like he has a script to follow, or a scene to reset.

Hi. It's probably been mentioned in the comments, but just in case... Concerning the doors of the EQS and your disappointment in the lack of self closing etc, the car can actually be programmed to recognize your approach, open the door for you, and when you get in and apply the brake pedal, it will auto close for you. I know you guys have quite a bit of autos and info to cover, but if you're going to bag on something, you should perform your due diligence as to not mislead or misinform the consumer. That being said, still one of my fav review channels! Good luck guys!

At the asking price of this vehicle to have so many downsides from a brand that is known from excelling at those same categories in a line of cars that is ment to represent the best of their products, I think Mercedes butchered this one pretty bad.

It has to be intentional. They want the S class to be better to make sure traditional S class buyers keep buying them and make Mercedes better margins. This hopefully attracts new buyers away from other EVs while not eating into S Class sales.
@updlate4756
@updlate4756 2 жыл бұрын
@@twiincentral8780 It's far cheaper than the S class. It has about the same starting price of the S class, which is unheard of for an EV powertrain, which often costs as much as $10k more. Throw in $7500 in federal tax credits plus whatever credit the state is offering. Add in $30k in fuel savings over 15 years, and savings on maintenance. (including time savings) In states with HOV lanes, this may get access to that. (A bit unfair IMO) You save time by not going to the gas station once every week or two, its turning radius is amazing, the available HEPA filter is a big deal in the city and states like CA. Throttle House got some of their points wrong. They didn't mention if the car had the double paned windows option when mentioning the road noise. They claimed that you needed the top trim to get heated rear seats, but that option is actually available on all trims. The biggest issues with this car are the weight, the rear seat length and roof height (assuming tall people will be using the rear seats), brake feel, and ability to canyon carve that all buyers won't be doing anyways. It's the only true BEV luxury car on the market, unless you count the Lucid Air that currently costs significantly more.

@@updlate4756 I would still rather have an S-Class, because it's a nicer car overall. I agree with Twiin Central, this is made to pull EV buyers from other automakers, not to shift S-Class buyers within the brand. That not only covers their EV quotas, that also keeps their cash cows funding everything.

There's always one thing that confuses me about Mercedes talking about their reasoning for the EQS' shape. The Model S Plaid for reference, looks like a normal sedan, yet can have more range, while still being equal in drag coefficient numbers. EQS: 0.2 Model S Plaid: 0.208

That 0.08 difference is the equivalent to the difference between the drag coefficient of a fighter jet (0.021) and a Boeing 747 (0.031). So what Mercedes has done to achieve that number is incredible. Factor in that the luxury inside and things like rear steering add on so much weight compared to the spartan interior of the Tesla and it all makes sense why they placed so much effort to achieve the range they did.

I think the key takeaway here is that even though compared to the current group of EV’s this might feel like a step up from an interior and refinement perspective, it can’t hold a stick to 50 years of refinement of the current gas S-class. Their key disappointments always stemmed from the comparison to what a S class meant to them, not what it does compared to say a Tesla or other new EV startup offerings that offer something new but lack the refinement of the other established brands.
