Had an Msport X1, traded for an X3M Competition. I really liked the way the old X1 drove, but my wife liked a bigger SUV. Space, utility, and driving dynamics, the X3M offered little more in that way on a daily basis. Love the new interior of the X1 and BMW produces such sublime four cylinder.

Great breakdown between these two vehicles! I've been eyeing the new X1 for a while now and I think I'll go ahead and pull the trigger. That engine bay comparison is really interesting and it's nice to see BMW add the attention to detail on something you'll rarely see, but having a clean engine bay is a nice feeling.

Lane guidance on Q3 was switched off (at 44:10), that’s why the car went off - otherwise lane keeping is superb. Occasionally , lane guidance does switch off inexplicably and one needs to turn it back on in the infotainment (not on turning signal lever). Great review Thomas, thank you!

I can't tell on BMW, but there are too much praise on the q3 than it is deserved. Done a test drive and it felt basic. That model was above 50k+tva and was lacking keyless entry and rear camera. You really need to go through all the options and pay attention to have a basic configuration.

I agree, we test drove a Q3 after having a few other Audi models, it felt extremely cheap and drove like a golf cart even compared to a basic A4

Great review! Always a pleasure to watch your videos!! Quick note - bear in mind that the presented LED headlights are an option/add-on. Meaning that the standard LED come with a much different headlight (as well the DRL, that doesn't even look like a BMW 🤨). Cheers, keep up the good work!

Really appreciate this review! All of the automotive journalists are way too focused on performance metrics that they forget about real-world drivability in day-to-day scenarios. In day-to-day driving, I don't really care if the steering is a bit numb, or if the car feels sporty in turns. I just want a car that's comfortable, quiet, and good for freeway driving. I have my C7 Z06 for carving twisty roads. My employer has decided we are going hybrid instead of 100% telework. My Corvette (which I bought during covid, when we were 100% telework) is a very fun car to drive, but it's my dream car. I don't want to put 10K miles/yr commuting into the office. With high interest rates making leasing a luxury German crossover equal to the cost of buying an economy-brand crossover, I'm leaning towards a luxury lease over a marked-up purchase. My online research has driven me towards the BMW X1, but I'll need to test them all myself before making a choice. This review already pretty much solidified my choice for the BMW (hate the bug look of the Benz, and prefer the X1 styling over the Q3). Now it's just a question of BMW vs Lexus (previously dd'd a Lexus IS350 F-Sport, and loved it).

The Audi wins hands down because it has proper physical controls for climate and a real gear lever. The BMW suffers from touchscreen madness. You can’t even increase the fan in the BMW without getting lost in the complicated touchscreen screen menus.

I do not like either Audi's or How's. They are far to large and heavy and a waste of the earth's resources. Modern BMW's noses are far to large and ugly. Won't be buying either. I do not like German cars .

How do you like your Q3? I just test drove one and really like the steering compared to the BMW. I own an X1 but the price, the ability to use regular fuel and the steering have me leaning towards the Audi.

I have never seen Thomas to be so excited about any car in a comparison and I have not yet driven the X1 so cannot really comment about the driving but it looks so much better than the previous iteration. I have a BMW 330i M Sport G20 and this is my 5th BMW and I think the steering is great so I cannot understand why Thomas goes on about it so much and criticises it. Other reviewers do not criticise the steering like Thomas does.

Have owned 3 BMW's in the past and have good experiences with all 3 cars so i am probably biased towards the BMW. After a test drive today with the BMW X1 xDrive25e, i didn't even bother to go test drive the Audi. The BMW was just that good in regards to power delivery, suspension, interior quality and electric range. In my eyes almost impossible to do better in this category.

Went with the X1 - I live over in the states. More room inside (especially father who is 6'4" and has plenty of head room and legroom in the front seat and even rear) Screen controls no problem for me as 6'1" and can easily reach them and once you get used to them it's very easy to use the console. It also iced up here last week over Christmas and the car handled perfectly on the roads. Plenty of trunk room (both kids off at University) and we live in the city so a real nice car to get around in (NYC) and handles just fine. Took it on the highway the other day and no complaints. Did I like the Q3?, sure but practically for me living in NYC this was the right choice - space and not too big with a whole new redesign, Audi just tweaks but still same design.

12:35 I have had a different experience with the Audi. I am 6 foot 3 or 191 cm and I had much more legroom in the Audi. I also see that the front seat is pushed back quite a bit more than necessary in your case. Also the doors in the rear are not made of hard plastics like in the BMW but are soft touch, just not very soft.

I really love the X1, but I think I prefer the Q3.. just little details like the materials used, chrome inserts about the cabin like the trunk/bumper guard lip, light design, rear amenities and inlay for the rear climate, and the gauges.. however, I prefer the BMW’s new use of sharp/modern elements like with the funky speaker grills, buttons, etc. Hard choice for sure!

As a BMW owner i'd like to choose the Audi as i can't be bothered with the BS that BMWs have these days. You said that the X1 had more comfortable suspension but as i've found lately with a number of different BMW models their suspension is often a bit underdampened and gets even softer after a couple of years. Though i have to admit, as u mentioned Thomas, BMW have good powertrains that can make them feel good to drive. Interestingly the inside door handles on the X1 look like the Q3's, in fact they're also similar to the CLA i just saw - why do manufacturers copy each other!? But the clincher would be; Can you spec a heated steering wheel on the Q3 [UK market]?

thanks for the review. If BMW NA treated people who buy cars as the customer and not the dealership, the choice would be easy given the poor gas mileage for the Q3. Now The Q3 is the only option left in this segment. Sadly inventory is so bad in NA, choices are essentially buy unseen/undriven and be treated like a sap.

I had a bmx x1 test drive in October when it is released with 20 inch alloys and m 23i. I liked the car a lot but i have bmw 5 series with adaptive suspension. The only downside was the suspension of x1 as i was feeling all the humps. I thought after 5 series it is like a downgrade for me and decided not to buy it. After watching your review, i am not sure if i need to give it a try again or wait for the new generation BMWs. I am also thinking to buy new 2023 GLC. If no new bmw release in 2023, i think glc will be a better option over X1

Current Mercedes interior quality is simply bad, both materials and assemble quality is far away from Audi and BMW. You will be disappointed with GLC compering to 5 series.

I agree the msport ride on 20” wheels is too fidgety. The msport is 14mm lower and higher spring rate hence the firm ride. The xline on 18 or 19” wheels is so much better

This is a very detailed and timely review! The Audi motor sounds like it's straining on acceleration compared to the X1. From your videos alone, the X1 seems more upscale and contemporary and designed and engineered better than the Q3. think your videos have calmed down my concerns of the X1 dual clutch transmission.

can differences in driving behaviour (which may not be noticed by the ordinary driver) compensate for the difference in price?? Personally I'd go for the Q3, because it's cheaper, probably has lower fuel consumption and is both internally and externally more stylish and elegant. Congrats for the test, and for the ENG language. For telling the trouth for a 50min testing i would expect some "off-road testing" for those AWD vehicles.

@@autogefuehl I picked the Q3 over X1 because here in Canada the top Tecknik trim for the Audi was only $48K with pano roof, Sonos speakers, all the fun options.....BMW base price without the other options was $54K and if you want the paddle shifter its an extra $5k for it, which honestly should be given since there are no gear stick like Audi. So BMW in all is still much more expensive if you start adding limited options ending up being at least $7-8K more. Q3 runs a bit cheaper because it doesnt need premium gas. BMW requires premium and prices on gas is not very fun when you pay more than $2.20 for premium 91.

Bmw x1 class above on my surprise ! you can clearly hear on video how better inuslation inside cabin, engine noise also is much better ,transmision clunky from audi vw dq500 not even worh to compare to this smooth bmw .Driving vise, also car boddy rooll is virutaly not existing, better bumbps handling. This is way class above audi q3 , and this is from somone who drive vw/audi daily .

I am really disappointed with Audis. Interior / exterior design.... It's the same with my 2018 Model . BMW did a big jump and I am going for the BMW X1 xDrive23d X-Line this summer. I did a test drive on both of them ... No more Audi for me .. 😡😡 As a fun I am really angry and disappointed with Audi .. The sportsback looks great but the price difference with the extras that I want it's big

January 2024 !!! (acc. to the dealer's BMW-system)(in Belgium). The dealer could not give any particular reason for the delay. 😒🙄

The engines chosen may play a big role because I had a completely opposite feeling with the X1 18d vs Q3 35 TDI. The X1 was too loud on acceleration and felt cheap, the suspensions were too firm giving me the feeling I was driving a Kia Picanto. With the Q3, it felt smooth, more premium, more welcoming. What do you think?

Great comparison! I am looking at a used 2023 Q5 Prestige and a used 2023 X1 28i... only $4,000 US $ more for the bigger/plusher but less modern looking Audi Q5...which would you choose?

My dad and I were looking for cars for me when I turned 15 last year. We were gonna get the 2022 X1, it it lacked technology and looked the same in the last decades. We went with the Audi q3 which k think is also a great car since it is the first one for me. Despite now of me looking and admiring at the X1’s new features, the Audi q3 is also a great car. It just looks more sportier while the x1 shows more of a classy tadte

I am in the midst of choosing between these two vehicles for purchase. I am hearing a lot of great news about the X1, which is making it harder for me to decide. For me the lack of push buttons on the bmw is a deal breaker. I am not sure I can get used to everything on the touchscreen. Comments?

Yeah I agree. The X1 is better, as for AC control u gotta be satisfied with auto setting or have it more complicated to change..

I've driven both cars too. Without all the options the X1 wins, but when you can affort a full option Q3, this car seems to be better (It also looks more premium). Personally I don't bother about the space on the backseats. Most of the time I'm driving all alone (like most people)

I think you did not spend enough time driving in slow and go traffic with the X1 to really evaluate the transmission. I would be curious to see you re-evaluate the X1 1 year later.

Super hard choice. Both are grate, but I think that maybe the Audi is starting to show its age a little bit? I think I would choose the bmw, but I would definitely miss the climate unit and the virtual cockpit in the Audi.

i would like to see more comfort features like right elbow rest. Most of the cars have right arm rest too low or too far back to reach. I think it is important for driving comfort and long drive.

They both look beautiful ! I love the fit and finish of both but completely agree with Thomas the BMW just outguns the Audi on this day. I'd buy both if I could but would prefer the BMW.

@@autogefuehl BMW a bit more comfortable than the Audi for the driver. There is no air suspension but adaptive one. As for seat width and knee space for the driver i could not find the info on the video.

Many thanks for making that comparison video. It was definitely bit of an eye-opener that the Q3 was so soundly beaten, apart from the steering and the physical air conditioning controls. Be that as it may. You mentioned initially, that despite the iX1 being in the same class as the Q3 that it would be more reasonable to compare the iX1 with the larger Q4. With that in mind. It would be particularly interesting to see a comparison video between those two, as I gather that the way the battery in the iX1 has been shoe-horned into the one-size-fits-all chassis has entailed 1. that the back-bench seating is now so low that it makes for a rather uncomfotable seating even for an adult of average height. Is this true? 2. that it is no longer possible to adjust each individual seat in the back bench lengthwise. Again is that so? Lastly, and in terms of refinement as I gather that it's an issue even for a Premium EV such as the VOLVO XC40 Recharge. Is there any discernable difference between the two cars in the noise, or rather whine, coming from the front axle electric motor? Again thanks for a great video.

Perhaps you should have tested the Q3 with the 45 TFSI instead of the 40. Less strain and more midrange grunt with the 45. Cannot abide by the wrap-around space-ship console on the X1 cockpit. Reminds me of a concept car interior from the 1970s. The X1 is also nowhere as attractive as the Q3 - to my eye. The design is messy and choppy at random points in the front and rear; it lacks integration of the lights, windows, grille, fascia. I am an admirer of a number of BMW cars, but the X1 is not one of them.
