I need switch off that function in winter when car get ice all over around. The volvo deller in my country saying that in no option on xc60, but in xc40 and xc90 its working.

We have both cars in the family. The XC60 is significantly more comfortable in the back with a more reclined seating position. Also the suspension is softer and more compliant in the XC60 (with conventional springs). Both are great cars.

Fully agree Nick. Have both as well. The XC40 is very lovable and the size is more practical in the city. But XC60 is more comfortable. Especially the airsuspension knocks the XC40 out of the park. And the seating in the back us indeed better. The first thing wife and children mentioned when they took place.

I had a 2021 xc40 inscription and loved it, upgraded to a 2022 xc60 rdesign b6 and have to say love it even more, bigger interior, I find it more comfortable, more powerful, more responsive due to being a mild hybrid,air suspension, much better product, but then it’s an upgrade and more expensive. Still love both types.

We are looking to buy a new car and literally just drove the XC40 T8 Recharge, comparing it with the XC60 T8 Inscription. Your review is timely and as usual, excellent Thomas. We found the T8 XC40 has a dynamic and responsive drive, great acceleration, but the regen is unusably harsh. Dealer told us the XC60 can run in all electric mode, which it can, BUT in that mode it has less power than a base mini, which is far lighter. To get full power you have to put up with the clattery four-pot and driven like that, has only slightly more mpge than my 2009 335i. No tangible advantage. You’re mostly right about Volvo’s seat materials but we differ: we think Volvo had a huge problem. We found the R-Design Alcantara option too firm, too hot (it’s made from used plastic bottles) and the black shows every single piece of dirt. There is leather available on the XC60, which is superb and the seats are fantastic, so we need to talk about“animal free….” Firstly, Volvo’s going away from leather because they say it can’t be recycled. This is completely wrong. It can be, so it’s unclear why Volvo are taking this move. Secondly, it doesn’t save a single cow to avoid leather, because the consumption of milk and beef won’t change, so now you’ll have to landfill the hide instead of using it, which then off-gasses, thus increasing GHGs. Thirdly, leather is part of the current carbon cycle and recycling can be structured to sequester carbon, thus reducing GHGs, so it’s a sustainable product, whereas Alcantara is a fossil fuel product that increases GHGs. Fourthly leather has superior appearance and resilience, making its life cycle at least as good as, if not superior to, plastic. Fifthly if Volvo is to compete as a premium brand it has to offer leather as a premium option and not doing so puts them at a disadvantage. All three Volvo dealers I spoke to said they have lost sales through not having leather. Lastly, remember that it’s only the seat surface that would be leather, so any recycling difference is a minuscule fraction of the car: but an extremely important and obvious one for many buyers. So can I encourage you to rethink “animal free” because when you look at the overall environmental, animal and financial impact, leather remains a suitable and sustainable option. I thus respectfully diverge from your conclusion (and having led sustainable initiatives in use in 117 countries, I do know a bit about this). The next big problem not in your review is that Google Automotive is a really poor system. It’s hyped on the ability to tell Google to do things, but we found the instructions are often misinterpreted. Worse, you have to tell anyone else in the car to stop talking while you give instructions. Try telling your wife to be quiet while you talk to the car and you’ll get the picture. The Google map in the driver’s binnacle is not useful as it’s difficult to read with bad contrast, tiny text and the contrast, perspective, text and zoom cannot be changed. It’s also laggy. You can remove the map, but this leaves an inadequate screen with minimal information, for example on the XC40 T8 there is, unbelievably, no remaining distance meter, which is on every single other BEV and is fundamental with batteries. You can see this on the centre screen, but it’s buried in the menus. Try flipping between needed menus, maps, media and controls at 120k and it can get dangerous. On the XC60, it’s compounded by needing to use drive modes, which used to have a switch (removed for the 2022 year), so you now have to go through menus to get this… as a result you are always tapping through menus when you should be watching the road. Bad concept. Dangerous. In our view centralizing so much in the Android system is dangerous and thus, the exact opposite of Volvo’s safety ethos. So what did we conclude? The hybrid XC60’s engine is just not great. Lots of power but noisy and far too complex, increases GHGs and dependent on the Android system’s (awful) design. The XC60 looks great, with great build and quality, but it’s flawed. The XC40 has no good seat choices and again, Android Automotive, lacking key information for a BEV and usability that used to be in Volvo’s own in-house predecessor system. Again for our money, major flaws. In our configuration: XC60 C$92,000. XC40 C$80,000. So which did we choose? Neither. Despite so much that’s right, especially the design, the seats and Google system’s were insuperable flaws. We are now looking again at the Audi e-tron, where range and excessive creaking plastic at this price are problems. BMW too ugly; three years for EV6. And so on. Maybe we’ll just have to wait, but for us, Volvo’s direction looks likely to rule it out forever. Too bad.

I would like for Thomas to engage with you. Your point of view is interesting, especially with regards to the sustainability. I am also not sure about the issue regarding wool as we often purchase wool jerseys. Will us not buying or using the wool from the sheep stop those farms existing? I also do consume meat on a few days a week and not at all due to religious practices, so I'm not saint but I am aware my meat consumption is far lower than many people around the developed world. Would love to hear more from you around these issues. Also, how is that 335i doing?

I mean sustainability is all nice and dandy to talk about and I can put this or that in my car... but why does all the "blame" lie on the "little guy" ? EU just put a draft of a law that exempts private planes from fuel tax. Hmm, wonder who that benefits. I should buy a wannabe eco plug in hybrid for insane amounts of money that doesn't even have good economy like you said, but jeff bezos built a 120 meters yacht that costs 400 million dollars. Hmm, alrighty then. I should get taxed for my c02 when big corporations destroyed 90% of Madagaskar forests and animals, 20% of Amazon forests, etc. They're closing nuclear plants and then going back to opening coal plants. In the year 2022 the EU says to take 5 min showers and use less energy while all the politicians travel 20 000 kms by private planes a month. Hmm, okay. In Switzerland people were protesting the WEF because "the elite" came to the conference by EV's and guess how they came to the Switzerland ? Yep, everyone with private planes. Who's being brainwashed here ?

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. Please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIHCdKmCocZ5oqs In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which exact body part you would be murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse? The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination. If you are interested in how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpzNdHSjppaSbqc Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally. For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex or Desertex or Miriam). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car. By ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) %. So it is the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And if you want the slick look or something to wipe clean easier, that is possible with animal free leatherette, even in ventilated options. And there are also new leatherette materials available which are superior in every aspect: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2qXiouAbJeIiqM More and more natural materials are rising: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIO2pIt7o9x7etE or kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3iWq2qja7qkhMk Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.
@CMCNestT
@CMCNestT Жыл бұрын
Wool is way way more breathable than any artificial fabric. It keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. There is absolutely nothing unethical about sheep existing or giving sheep a hair cut for the summer.
@autogefuehl
@autogefuehl Жыл бұрын
www.google.com/search?q=whats+wrong+with+wool If we keep a sheep as a pet like a dog and visit the sheep's barber and he takes care of it, sure no problem. But the problem is that wool is gained in an industrial scale where sheep are connected to mass factory farming and are suffering massively. There is a reason why the manufacturer Kvadrat does not reveal their sources where their wool is coming from, I have asked them multiple times and they refuse to tell me.
@theunown1912

@@autogefuehl Should we be reconsidering purchasing wool jerseys? I'm not particularly sure what not buying the wool will do to reduce the animals killed for meat consumption. Will it not just drive up the price of lamb and mutton?

To really compare the audio sound quality of the Harmon Kardon to the Bowers and Wilkns you need to play a full 24 bit track that's not compressed at all, and set the equalizer to your preference. I am telling you the B&W is by far leaps and bounds in the sonic sound scape you can distinguish.

I respect your opinion but I have to disagree. I have a XC60 full Equip, and this week I have driven xc40 for 5 days. My impressions are: Cabin space larger in xc60 specially drivers position for legs. Bowers and wilkins much better than Harman Kardon, specially in low frequencies response and sharp and crisp perfect balanced mid and hi. Much better I would say. No comparison here if you like music. Air suspension and double glass windows make xc60 a more silent and relaxing driving experience than xc40. Behavior also better with xc60 and air suspension, in bends particulary. More luxury feeling in xc60 inscription, is like being at your living room. In general I would say that price gap is justified imho. I would pay it, despite xc40 is a great car. Good channel.

What a great review! And precisely what I need. I'm looking for a company car and both are option (thou XC60 with slightly less options). And I couldn't decide because, to be honest I find XC60 a more handsome car, but reality is I don't need the extra space that much and parking space is a real issue. An everyday struggle. After your video I think I Will go for 40. One thing that I find much better in XC60 is the boot top shelf, which in xc40 is a traditional hard shelf, whereas on XC60 is a more practical soft roll cover. This is important since the boot is shallow. Anyway, the best review, I enjoyed it all the way. Gruesse aus Kroatien.

Very thorough as always, Thomas. Currently driving an XC90, but am thinking of downgrading to an XC60 when my lease is up. Would love a comparison between XC60 and XC90. Edit: I wanted to add that I found the suspension in the XC90 to be very firm and likely also due to the 21inc wheels, I feel pretty much every imperfection on the road. The noise sealing is not that great, especially on the highways.

I appreciate attention to details in your videos. I just ordered XC40 Twin Engine Recharge as my next lease (XC90 currently) and was considering the light wool seats - but at the last moment I changed to black micro-fiber, as dealer warned me that those might get dirty with my small children using them in the back. I also went for Ultimate version (the only one with 360 camera!) that has sunroof that should make it more bright inside. Your video seems to confirm my decision. So please keep doing the comparisons and comment on different versions of the same vehicle - colors, features etc. This is a strong point of your videos. It is also fine if you go into detail like the Settings. For example Creep Mode or not for One Pedal Driving. I think Creep + Break is more precise when parking at the exact spot - than just stopping using One Pedal. Greetings from Sweden!

Excellent review and useful detailed comparison - as always! I have owned an XC40 T3 for the last two years and as my first Volvo I have been extremely happy with the car, especially the seat comfort and overall ride and drive comfort. I have been thinking about the XC60 as a potential upgrade but given your review I will remain with my XC40. My only comment is that rear breakpads have worn to 70% in 15k miles of driving. This is apparently a known trait of this model. The City Safety system is a little bit aggressive with invoking breaking when not required and I beleive this adds wear to the rear disk pads. Interesting video. Nicely detailed for the time allotted (by human attention). One thing I would say is for some that trunk space makes all the difference. There has been plenty of times where certain things "just barely fit" in the XC60 for me where I no there's no way I'd get it in the XC40. My poor XC60 isn't a luxury vehicle any more. It's been relegated to hard work since day one. It's like they went out a bought a bunch of dimensional crap from stores and designed the car to get as much of it in as possible without tearing the car up. I seen a few XC40's up close and immediately knew the XC40 wouldn't work for me.

I just bought a slightly used 2.0L XC40 T5 Inscription, and my wife bought a new 2.0L mild hybrid XC60 B5 Ultimate with the HUD. The XC40 drives like a go cart. For me it is almost too fast, as I have a tendency to be stupid in a fast car. It's fast on takeoff. We both traded Fords. Me a 2.0L 240HP Fusion AWD with an average 23MPG. My Fusion wasn't fast. Slow kick down, and you had to push it hard to get it to go up hills. My wife traded a twin turbo 3.5L 350HP Explorer Sport. Nice car, but after 7 years it began to have very expensive electrical problems, and a known looming water pump issue. My weekly gas bill has dropped by 50%, and I get up to 40MPG going to work. In the Fusion I was once able to hit 25MPG freeway by semi-hypermiling. My wife said she used to use 2 gallons of gas a day, but now those two gallons get her to work and back for three days. City she gets 30MPH. The new GUI is much better than the old one, but the XC60 has the auto stop feature that can't be turned off unless you put it in the performance (Polestar) mode. The safety features are exceptional. They really do protect you from the other utter morons out there on the road. I used to utterly detest driving, but now I am starting to almost enjoy it again.

I own a XC40 T5 4x4 with the Polestar tuning package (Petrol, 2l, 4 cyl, 250 PS, 400 Nm torque) for a little bit over 2.5 years now (it's an "early 2020" model). Based on the Momentum trim in Glacier Silver with some additional stuff, I can honestly say it's by far the best car I ever owned and I did own a few already (Subarus, VWs, Skodas, Mazdas, other Volvos). I can't compare it to the XC60 as I never drove one of those. The engine is absolutely amazing and the automatic gear box (8 speed) is the best I ever owned. For the two of us, the size of the car and the interior is 100% perfect and the boot even fits my wheel chair without the need to fold down the rear seats, which is of course very important for me. I also like the design of the XC40 and the build quality is superb. The ride quality is very good and comfortable. Also the seats are near perfect for me and my wife.

@@michelebicc6983 Fuel consumption is ok. We don't really care or we would have bought the diesel engine. ;) Considering our road profile (about ⅓ is in towns at 50 km/h, the rest is out of town at 80 km/h, seldom highways at 120 km/h), the tires (the standard 18" wheels) and the weight of the car, I think 8.3 litre/100 km on summer wheels and 8.9 litre/100 km on winter wheels is acceptable. It's not a very economic car but I think for being a small SUV / Cross Over this is OK. Of course you can get a better fuel consumption depending on the style of your driving and with the B4 (formerly called T4 by Volvo) engine. Mind you, we have the most powerful engine for the XC40 and of course it wants to be fed. ;)

@@michelebicc6983 I have a B4 FWD and have done 4000 km in it so far, with a total fuel consumption of 6.0 l/100 km. All types of driving - motorways, main roads, rural roads, city streets. I've been very positively surprised by the fuel economy, expected something in the range of 7-8. The mild hybrid seems to make a surprisingly big difference - so don't be put off by reports of the old non-hybrid XC40s not being very efficient. Obviously if you go for the AWD that will reduce efficiency slightly, but probably not by much.
@osiris1802
@osiris1802 Жыл бұрын
@@chachar7458 Wow, 6 l/100km is really great! I didn't expect the hybrid to help with fuel consumption as much. 👍 I sure didn't want to put anyone off by my post with the fuel consumption of my XC40 T5 AWD. Mine is a classic petrol only engine (no hybrid) with a classic "old-style" 8 speed automatic gear box (no double clutch system, thank god for that as I really HATE the double clutch gear boxes) and it's also the Polestar tuned and it's also AWD so of course it's a bit thirsty. We did know that in advance but my wife and I just don't care about it in any way. Also I guess I could get the fuel consumption easily down by another 0.5 to 0.75 l/100 km if I would drive more "carefully" or rather economical. 😉 But then... I have way too much fun using all those 250 PS and 400 Nm driving the car. 😂 I did own a Volvo S40 T5 (2.5 l, 5 cyl petrol engine) in 2007 with Bilsport engine tuning (Stage 3) and Heico exhaust once and it was a real animal and a beast (>300 PS and >450 Nm torque). This one did use about 10 l/100 km but was much lighter and only FWD. So I still think the fuel economy of my current XC40 T5 AWD is OK. My first car ever in the early 1990s was a Subaru Station Wagon AWD (2nd generation L-Series, year 1984 model) with a 4 cyl 1.8 l boxer turbo petrol engine and a 3 speed automatic gear box. It did only have 120 PS but sure as hell had a terrible fuel consumption of about 13 l/100 km. It was way weaker, smaller and much lighter than my XC40 T5 but still used much more fuel. So we have come a long way and I'm happy. 😀

I have a ton of experience with the 40 and driven the 60, as well. The 60 is more put together. It feels like a true luxury car. A nice place to be. Quieter. Solid as a tank. This is also it's weakness, which is why I'd take the 40 any day. While the 40 is not as nice, it's still quite nice and worthy of being a luxury offering. The main thing is it's fun to drive! The steering on the volvos is nothing to write home about, sure, but the 40 is quite playful and takes to corners rather easily. That shorter wheelbase and lighter curb weight have much to do with it. And because it tends to have morebody roll, that adds to the fun! The 60 is much more solid, like driving a tank, but that defeats the purpose of fun driving. Overall, I'd take the 40 despite some shortcomings. If I had to take the 60, I'd trade it in and find something else that can better balance luxury with fun driving!

The base Mild hybrid B3, B4 and the full electric already all have the android auto and the new dashboard. The T2 and the T4-T5 twin engine (plug in) dont get and will not get it as optional. Just like you cannot get the new matrix headlights on the plug in hybrid. Ps: the xc40 in plug in will stop production end of this year. Only available in mild hybrid or ful electric . Ps: you mentioned at the beginning the XC40 also comes as diesel. Actually diesel long discontinued in this car, was onky there in the early models. PPS: you also forgot the technology design concept, the XC40 is FWD only with a dual clutch 7 speed auto operating on the front axle. While the xc60 (just like the s60, v60, v90, xc60 and xc90) the T6 and T8 recharge is a petrol engine in front coupled with a electric engine on the rear drive, giving it that “awd” end result.
