Caresoft has begun its benchmarking teardown of the Tesla Cybertruck and invited Autoline in to see the first stages of the process. Terry Woychowski, the president of the company, points out some of the highlights of the 4-wheel steer-by-wire system, the 48 volt connectors, the battery pack, the gigacastings and other castings that are used through the vehicle.

When Sandy sat down with the Cybertruck VPs and lead engineers at Tesla to discuss the Cybertruck they mentioned not everything was 48 volts. IIRC its 48v to major components and local POE control modules and stepped down to 12v out from there to the little stuff. So it shouldn't have 12 volt wiring all throughout but might have local runs to 12 volt components
@bullshitbingo2259
@bullshitbingo2259 2 ай бұрын
yeah, but that is just stupid. Just use 800V for major components and 12V for everything else. That is cheaper, safer and actually more capable when you run things like the active suspension from the 800V which is what Porsche did with the latest Taycan facelift. Porsche actively tried to eliminate high voltage to lower voltage converters and use the 800V system architecture as far as possible. Interior lights etc run on a small 12V battery. Nobody needs 48V it is just to cut a couple of bucks for Tesla. The customer has no real world advantage whatsoever
@SyntheticSpy
@SyntheticSpy 2 ай бұрын
@@bullshitbingo2259 If the 800v system fails then the 48v system will still be operational for things like steering in an emergency.
@bullshitbingo2259
@bullshitbingo2259 2 ай бұрын
@@SyntheticSpy why would the 800V system fail? Also Porsche does not use crappy steer-by-wire since that would destroy the joy of driving, so you can still steer without power. But they do use 800V for the active suspension which is actually awesome engineering. For lights/screen etc you have 12V anyway. No real world advantage for the customer to have 48V. In fact repairs might be more costly and timely to source the parts. And there is also some health risk involved with running switches or interior parts with 48V. Just a cost cutting measurement by Tesla and to further control the vehicle ecosystem.
@davidmenasco5743
@davidmenasco5743 2 ай бұрын
@@bullshitbingo2259The 48v makes it possible to use off the shelf components for Power Over Ethernet. This is important for the electronic architecture. And, between the unique electronic architecture and the 48v distribution to major components, there is a significant reduction in A) weight, and B) cost, and C) quantity of natural resources (copper) required to make the vehicle, in other words, the environmental impact. All of these things affect the customer, but especially the cost and the weight. Even if this vehicle doesn't realize the potential cost savings, future vehicles certainly will.
@SyntheticSpy
@SyntheticSpy 2 ай бұрын
@@bullshitbingo2259 the point of not going higher than 48 is that it is considered safe. Also what “joy of driving” do you get in a truck? Also Porche themselves developed a steer by wire system

I'll be very interested to see the battery layout, especially as it regards thermal event management. I was less than comfortable with what little i saw of that in the "structural battery" teardown on another channel. With only that one sheet of steel between the cells and the occupant compartment it is critical that products of combustion and thermal effects are kept away. Similarly I am curious about front and rear interior door latch operation in a power out situation. Good video. Thrilled to see teardowns by a neutral engineering firm. What the heck, let's look at steering system power supply redundancy as well.

My Model 3 has a Lithium ion battery that runs the car in camp mode and the accessories. I’ve run it all night on many occasions. I understand that it has a life of 4k cycles. It recharges off the main propulsion battery. I imagine that the CT does the same.

"Your Model 3" has 2 "Batteries" . A "12v" battery which performs exactly the same duties as that in an ICE car. Lights Displays, Computers, Low voltage motors, Doors, Etc. . Then it has the "Propulsion pack" which deals with the high loads. . "Propulsion" (obviously) which includes heating, cooling and pumping liquids around itself and the drive system. . Plus, If you're in "Camp mode" you will be using the *propulsion battery* to either obtain existing heat from fluids in it's system, OR Generate new heat by essentially "vibrating" the drive motors to warm fluids (similar to an induction cooktop) then pumping the warmed fluid. . It will also top up the *12v battery* (which was Lead acid in older models, but is now 14-16v(?) Lithium Ion) ..... "Life" There's STILL a misconception that packs have a "LIFE" of "xxxx cycles". . WRONG. The "life" quoted is the *Guaranteed remaining capacity* after "X years" or "Y distance" which would equate to an average of cycles.... Which they quote. . It NOT the "LIFE" of a pack, after which it's toast, good for only recycling. . It's the "Expected time to "X percent capacity". . As in "4,000 expected cycles" to 80(?) percent of "capacity when new" remaining . Guaranteed of 8 years. . You start with 80 kWh/ 330 miles. . After 8 years you're at... 83%(?) . You have ±273 miles ... BUT That's if you charge the pack fully 10 times every week. . Charge once per day, 7 days per week? 4,000/ That's 10.9 years. . ±300 miles per day average, every day for 11 years? . You're going to be more knackered than the battery!! . Now go to a "normal" user. 800 miles per month? Call it 1,000/ month That's 3 charges in 1 month. Call it 4? . 1 per week? 4,000 charges, = 4,000 weeks? . 4,000 / 52= 77 years..... Should be enough? . Now consider the price of cells..... Declining. . It's not going to be an issue for the vast majority.

@@eddiegardner8232 yeah, but that is just stupid.

:Thank you - great to see the dismantling happening - the body is much less exoskeleton and much more high strength steel unibody with a few "cosmetic" barely structural flat SS skins ?glued? on.... (NB, the body in white only needs to be structurally sound for the manufacturing process - until the floor gets sealed in, then the full stiffness is achieved when the bonding is cured. - There is a real assembly benefit that workers can just stand inside while installing the dash and trim etc - and the interior is also assembled without being forced to crawl and fit inside a cabin. - the steering feedback - ?/ is completely simulated? - where does the raw data come from - for the "gamification" of the steering (strain gauges somewhere in the steering linkages - the tight steering actuation and high power -steering output - means that angle sensors won't really respond to road forces) unless the steerring algorithm has compliance built in.

9:40 isn't it funny that our first thought about steer by wire system is usually that in case of such system's failure there is nothing stopping is from accident, but we never think about the multitude of possibilities why the traditional steering systems can fail as well? That shaft he holds in his hands can be broken on both ends, the telescopic mechanism can seize up, as well as the mentione bearings. And failure can happen further down as well. Shouldn't the first logic be that cancelling the idea of the shaft avoids a whole host of other possible failures?
