Changed mine today, took longer to find my tools than do the job btw, and the fluid didn't look all that dirty. Y'all don't do what I did when refilling, I was pouring from a gallon jug and didn't think about how much the dipstick tube could hold at once. I had a little spillage but I had jammed my funnel in pretty snug. Thanks, Robert.

Thank you Robert, this is very informative instruction. I just replaced ATF in my 28 years old 850 and I actually did it from the top: used the fluid suction pump and went through the dipstick pipe all the way to the bottom of the transmission using a thin flexible plastic piping. The result is removal of 3.5 litres of ATF in the first run and then the same quantity in each consecutive run. I didn’t want to go from the bottom as I was afraid the plug may crush when attempting to open it (so many years of exposure to outer elements). Good luck everyone - keep your Volvos alive - cars are not made this way anymore.

These heater cores get coolant 100% of the time, regardless of the temp setting. So, if you suspect it is leaking, bypass it or replace it. A lot of people blow their motors with bad heater cores. #1 cause of these cars showing up at the junk yard. - Heater Core Replacement, Volvo S70, V70, XC70, 850 - Auto Repair Series - Coolant leak from heater core connection seal, Volvo - Auto Information Series

That is correct with most autos. The transmission box will have a certain amount of fluid in it at all times, then the lines that go to the cooling system for it will have a certain amount of fluid in it. The owners manual will tell you how much fluid is in the entire system. So when you pull the drain plug and the fluid drains out, you can measure how much comes out to determine how much is still in the system.

Another great video Robert. I was feeling apprehensive about the majority advice to fully flush and was thinking about several drain-fills instead....... it just felt less risky. Now I see you and others do it that's the way I'm going. The car is very low mileage for the age (15 years/75000 miles) but it has never been changed so would rather do it gradually.

Two gallons and 3 quarts. Yes about $36. The average transmission shop charges about $200 for a flush so you'll save a bundle. It's about as much as an oil change but every 25,000 miles. :)

I would say that 80,000 km (or 50,000 miles) is a good time to change it. If fluid comes out dark or has metalic sheen to it, I would do it sooner. I do mine every 30,000 KM (or 25,000 miles), but I do tow things with mine from time to time and my fluid looks dirty.

No, it is the same. My car has the turbo inter-cooler. Actually, the transmission does not connect to the turbo system. The turbo has oil and coolant that goes through it. The oil cooler goes through part of the radiator. There is 2 coolant lines behind the motor that should be replaced every 10 years or so.

Hi Robert DIY , I have a 1996 non turbo volvo 850 wagon, automatic transmission. I'm confused, I keep seeing videos where people seem to add and drain fluid repeatedly till the system is super clean...Can I just flush it out, add 3 1/2 quarts and call it good? If the levels are correct? Or do I keep manually removing and re-attaching the drain plug for multiple flushes? Thank you for your videos, they're very helpful!
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 9 жыл бұрын
Colin Wilson The system holds about 8 quarts. The best way to change the fluid is to disconnect a line from the radiator, and let the tranny pump the fluid out and suck it in at the same time. You just have to make sure that the system is doing just that. It is complicated and is believed to be more aggressive which can damage the transmission.

Hi, Robert, i would like to thank you for these wonderful videos. Also i had one question. I have 99' Volvo S70 with 115K miles on it. Was running beautiful but now all of a sudden it has started showing CEL. which doesn't seem to be any problem, checked codes and nothing too significant to worry. But every often i get along with this CEL are the three different signs as follows: A flashing arrow , Brake and ABS. These three signs that i am talking about they stay on for couple of hours or sometimes couple of days. Out of these three signs flashing arrow stays for a longer time than the Brake,ABS. The CEL sign is permanent. So can you figure out what seems to be the problem? Have you encountered such problem ever? The only time i have problem running my car is when those three signs are ON. The car feels heavy have to give more on the Gas pedal. When these signs are OFF car runs just fine. All fluid levels are OK.an it be an electronic problem, something loose,etc. Please help me it would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Robert, I recently purchased a 2001 Volvo C70 it has over 120k miles and sometimes there is a delay when shifting into gear or it drops pretty hard into gear. I have watched other videos of people replacing the ATF on their Volvos and noticed your way of replacing the fluid with this video. I am going to Autozone later today and purchasing the Castol ATF for Import multi vehicles and hoping my problem is just the fluid and not solenoid packs inside the tranny. Apparently a complete flush of the old fluid with all new fluid can cause even more problems. Thanks for information!

I doubled checked to make sure Castrol is good. However, it appears something has already happened to the transmission. I went to remove the drain the plug and you can see the seams where the the transmission fits together has dried orange permatex pealing off. I can only assume the previous owner had some issues with it and had it fixed and it wasn't repaired correctly. I drained about a gallon of fluid and replaced exactly what I took out. Leveled it off after getting the fluid hot and still the same issues. From P to R it drops pretty hard, from R to D same deal. Once you are in D it goes through the gears with no problems when you drive it, its just the initial engagement of the gears to R and D. The only other way to describe it is a 69 Chevelle with a 350 turbo trans. Once you drop it in D it slams into gear and ready for the gas pedal. Yes, this is what I have going on with a 2001 Volvo C70 convertible.

I also attempted to repair the glass window to the canvass to the canvass top. Every attempt there has failed. It is temporarily fixed until I can find a good place to order a new top from. Hey Robert my 96 Volvo 850 shifts hard in all the gears when it's up shifting, and when I let off the gas when I'm in 4th gear I can fell drag coming from the transmission. Do you think changing out the fluid would make the transmission shift more smooth? I have replaced all 5 of the transmission/ motor mounts so I don't believe the rough shifts are being caused by that. Any help you could give me would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Robert, I've been really enjoying your videos for the past few weeks. I recently picked up a Volvo V70 2.5 10v auto with 98,000 miles. It's been running OK for a couple of weeks but I was detecting a slight burning smell then the car started to judder in first and reverse. The problem only occurs once the car is hot after about 20 minutes of driving. After doing some research I thought it was possibly the fluid. So i watched your video and completed the first of three drains of the fluid. The fluid that came out was pretty brown, there were no metal filings on the magnet on the plug. I've just driven the car a moment ago and it was great until it got hot but then the juddering returned. Do you think it's purely because I haven't done the three drain and refills yet or something worse?

How to have the best level of automatic transmission fluid when you check it after flushing? In order to AVOID to fill up more than the maximum , after flushing the used ATF fluid, just measure the quantity with the help of a measuring jug. Just add the SAME quantity of NEW fluid through the deepstick's hose. To be sure to get the correct level, engine running at idle, shift P-R-N-D-L twice and 5 seconds on each position as Robert advises! Then have a little drive 19 miles / 30 km to get warm the automatic gearbox's fluid. Park your 850/960, let the engine still running and check the level side "HOT" of the deepstick: it should be BETWEEN the minimun and the maximum. The difference of minimum and maximum is only 0,5 L/ 0,13 gal, which is little! You can't be mistaken! May I should add this? In winter, after a normal driving, the level may be over MIN, which is correct 👍. Useless to add anything! In summer, after a normal driving, the level may be a little bit over MAX, which is still correct 👍. Never mind 😉! Drive your Volvo and be happy 😊!

Remove your fresh air snorkel and beneath the coolant hose you will see a white plastic piece, this is the bleeder valve, on it is a cap that rotates in a 360 angle. I've seen some of your vids. so that description is sufficient since your well acquainted with your car, granted you have the bleeder valve. Leandro Fonseca I just helped a guy change my 2004 KIA Optima transmission (I've been working on my own car for almost 3 years, but couldn't do a transmission by myself). My man, for an extra $5 to make your transmission last longer...that's a no-brainer. Also, I learned about auxiliary coolers and inline filters-- got both, going to install them as soon as I can. The magnet in an inline filter catches more metal than the magnetic bolt in a trans pan-- very good upgrade and less than $30. My cooler was $50 at Advanced Auto but I had a $20-off-of-$50 coupon. Heat and metal will destroy your trans-- a cooler and inline filter will increase your trans life. I'm taking this KIA to 500k miles, God willing.

These cars do not have a radiator cap. You have to add coolant in the coolant reservoir on the right side of the motor. You should NEVER remove the cap when the car is warm/hot. Do it first thing in the morning or when the car is cold.

Done this method on my 850 and my S70 and no slipping after ...if you drain the whole system and refill with new fluid your almost guaranteed to have that trans start slipping.....this method costs as of 10/29/15 about $40 with all fluids (x3) and the new washer 25(cents).if yours is brown its well used and time to change it ..it needs to be red looking but again if you don't change that brown stuff out it will slip (in time) and if you switch it out (it may ) slip if you get to crazy with the old trans and the new slippery fluid you put in. I had no issues with either cars and they had over 160K and I know the fluids were never changed out....

Hello Robert, great information. I recently bought a 2002 C70 Hardtop Coupe which appears to be showroom mint condition through and through. The Carfax report showed all services at the two dealers up to 126K miles that had the timing belt changed. I bought it at 143K and I want to change the transmission fluid, but I think it should be flushed to prevent problems. Would it be better to flush it? Or simply do the change you recommend in this video without changing the filter. Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer.

Hello Robert, When you drain/refill as described, what color is the fluid that comes out? I ask because when I drain/refill my V90, putting in clear pink transmission fluid, the stuff that comes out is opaque brown, even after ten drain/refill cycles. (First time it was black as soot.) Only about two quarts comes out at each draining with my V90, but I calculate that only about 4% of the original oil now remains. I think I may now simply be washing sludge out of the sump of the transmission. For my own satisfaction, I'd like to see clear pink fluid come out when I drain. I am wondering if it would make sense to remove the transmission sump and clean it out.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 9 жыл бұрын
+v8pilot You may want to check the specs in the owners manual. I'm pretty sure the system holds about 8 quarts or more. You can disconnect the line at the radiator and let it pump out fluid while you have the other line suck some in. Just make sure you add what is coming out and don't let the balance get to far off. Like add a quart after you drain a quart.
@v8pilot
@v8pilot 9 жыл бұрын
+Robert DIY Thank you Robert. You are correct - the manual says the total fluid is 8.2 quarts. But, never having seen it done, I am nervous of disconnecting the line to the radiator with the engine running. I noticed if I put new fluid in, with the drain plug removed, what immediately drains out is murky. I think there may be a load of sludge in the pan that is slowly getting washed out. I have ordered a new transmission filter (which comes with a new pan gasket) and I plan to remove the sump and clean it. If my theory is right, after that, I should have clean oil in the transmission. I'll post a follow up when I have done it.

+Robert DIY Update: I ordered a new filter for my V90 transmission. It came together with replacement gasket for the pan. I removed the pan and the old filter. The pan had a significant amount of gray sludge in it that had not drained out despite my numerous fluid changes. I assume the sludge was metal (steel) powder. The pan had been sealed to the transmission with some kind of silicone goo - at the factory, I imagine. I carefully removed the old sealant from the rim of the pan, wiped out the pan until it was clean, and cleaned its magnets. Then I fitted the new filter, held in place by three bolts, I replaced the pan using the new gasket (not with sealant) and I topped the fluid up to the correct level. I am hoping that, after a couple more partial fluid changes, I'll now get pink fluid coming out when I put pink fluid in. I am assuming that my car's transmission had a hard life with its previous owner. The fluid was opaque black when I changed it and I can't beleive it is normal to have that much metallic sludge in the transmission. Having steel powder in the transmission fluid (if that is what it was) cannot be good. Steel powder does not seem likely to be a good lubricant for gears and bearings.

I agree. I usually get that stuff off of the plug of most of the cars I change the fluid in. I think it comes off of the pads between the gears.

Hi Robert, thanks for the video. You told you used a regular cheap transmission fluid and it's dexron III. My 95 850's owner's manual says I should use dexron II. Is there a particular reason why you used dexron III, I mean, is it better than using the II or your manual just recommends it? Don't I need to worry about buying a expansive brand ATF? I was also thinking about changing the hydraulic steering fluid (manual recommends to use ATF there as well) and I found no video of yours about it. Would you recommend it? Thing is, I bought my car this year, it's always been owned by only one guy and though it has only 113k kilometers on it I thought I would be a good thing to replace all the fluids (engine oil, obviously, but also transmission fluid, hydraulic steering fluid and break fluid) and have my own control of it from now on.

Hi Robert, What are your thoughts of a complete flush vs. a drain and fill on these older high mileage 850s? My transmission fluid on my '95 850 is very dark at the moment and I'm not sure the previous owners ever changed this. I've done some reading and some mechanics say that you can 'shock' an older transmission by doing a complete flush. What do you recommend?
