I loaded ordnance on these boys back in the day! That view from the cockpit brings back some memories. In Al Asad, Iraq, we would load 1 jet with 1 GBU16 on station 2 and L-pod on station 6 and the other jet with 1 Maverick and L-pod. Both had external fuel tanks on 3 and 5. Also both had full ammo packs of 300 25mm incendiary rounds and only once did we load depleted uranium. They also had AIM9 missiles on 1 and 7 and of course full chaff and flare buckets. One of our pilots had a close call and had to dispense all his chaff/flares to thwart a SAM but made it back ok. Good thing we didn’t load the buckets upside down or have the wrong code in the SMC! Thanks for the vid and bringing back some memories👍🏻 P.S. Don’t you think it’s about time to end these wars?

Great video, thank you Cap. Still learning the Harrier and your videos are the most practical and have tons of info packed in. The Harrier is such an incredible plane too, almost as much armament as an A-10 but in a f****n jump jet!

7:05 The 2 chevrons are Max and Min range while the lines at 9 o'clock and 10.30 are 4000 ft and 5000 ft with 12 o'clock representing 6000 ft (and 1500 ft min). The min and max carets can be set by the pilot using ODU and UFC.

With rockets the 12 o'clock represents 10k and 2k feet rather than the 6 and 1.5 for gun.

When you select Cannon on pylon 4A, noticed 4B is empty. Don’t you need a Lightning Pod on 4B to help look for targets on the ground? Another question: Could you opt for a 2nd Cannon on 4B, i.e. double the Cannon rounds?

Hey! 4A is where the cannon hangs and 4B is where the ammo pack hangs. There is a transfer conveyer that goes from the ammo pack to the cannon that cycles live ammo in and spent casings out. The spent casings are returned to the ammo pack and emptied out by manual crank by some jarheads😂 300 25mm rounds is the max amount of ammo that the harrier can carry. Cool bit: the energy needed to cycle the Gatling gun when fired comes from the 8th stage engine bleed air which is obviously very hot. When we first load the gun/ammo pack onto the jet, the flex hose that connects the 3” air pipes is tested before flight to ensure its sealed. We wrapped a durable white cloth around both joints and the jet is chained down and brought up to 90% or so of max thrust. After we let it cool and inspect the cloth. If it’s still white, good to go! We only loaded the L-pod for ordnance that was fitted with laser guided tech (GBU, Maverick) but that’s a good point, if there was an open pylon to be used, it would probably help the pilot find targets. Hope that answered your questions! I loaded ordnance on these back in 2004, it was a really awesome job, I just really hope we can learn from our mistakes and end these wars!🤙🏼

@@NothingTrue11 Good info! The one thing to keep in mind when you are strafing is to keep the engine RPM up, otherwise the gun will not fire. I haven't tested it enough to know exactly where the cut-off point is but in most aircraft it's usually SOP to pull back the throttle when you dive to keep your airspeed low, not so in the Harrier 🙂

I have a question for the long time players: what is the difference between the regular ($50-$70) DCS modules and the flaming cliffs modules? I’m building my pc at the end of the month and I can’t find any good information.

Kristoffer Audestad , thanks for typing that long answer. So I’m correct when I say the flaming cliffs models are like the first IL-2 game? Different aircraft with different flight characteristics, but the keyboard inputs are the same for all. Think I’ll get Flaming Cliffs then, and when someone develop a Blackburn Buccaneer (especially the later S2B) I’ll spend some cash on that

The difference is more than just not being able to click the cockpits. All the systems are simplified in FC3 aircrafts as they do not have accurate data from the manufacturers or governments/airforces, as opposed to high fidelity modules. So all the systems in FC3 are based on fictional or extrapolated data, even the "professional" FM..they are not on the level of HF modules. That is why it is cheaper and why we do not have HF modules of FC3 aircrafts yet ( SU27/33, Mig29 for instance) as ED did not have the authorizations to get access to these data from the Russian gov. For the F15 there is one HF module that is planned by Razbam. But yes it is a good place to start but not simulated to HF modules standard/accuracy.

@@SFDPSFDP Also, damage models are very different. I well place bullet will cause specific systems in the high fidelity models to fail.

Oh I wish there were WP weapons, gotta love warcrimes... It's all fun and smokes though. Too bad. Can still kill some stuff with direct hits though. By the way that would make an interesting video, wouldn't it. Which training weapons and weapons not mean to kill (Illumination/WP/etc) weapons can murder things anyway. I imagine practice bombs still hurt a whole lot if they fall on your head.
