A short visit to one of the famous spots to see in San Gorgonio Wilderness, the Dry lake. I have seen this in different times, during winter when it is frozen, spring just right now while it has an overflowing water level and summer when it was totally dry.
But this time is different because of the recent damage caused by the avalanche happened from Charlton Peak a month ago. Although the trail is still passable, it is very difficult to cross to some hikers with so much debris blocking the path around Southfork Meadows. Also the switchbacks towards Grinnell Mountain area is having numerous blockage of downed trees. When crossing the debris zone, just follow the pink ribbon. The water crossings are also difficult especially in the late afternoon when so much snow/ice have melted through the day.
Upon approaching the lake, you will see the overflow drainage. The sight will bring an awe to someone's face seeing the Sierra-like setting of this spectacular place.
The forest is alive, with lots of wildlife around. We saw lots of birds, frogs. deers and even a bear.
Please practice Leave No Trace and avoid playing loud music so everyone can enjoy nature at its finest.

Looks like you two had a great day out there! Food looked delicious too! Thanks for the shoutout! Sugarloaf is my favorite. Maybe this year I stay the night on top! Back in the 40s they actually stocked Dry Lake with fish, but because the lake goes dry in some years, they stopped stocking it. Man it would have been cool to see the Avalanche happen!

I watched your video from 2017 and I thought maybe I can give it a try for an overnight.. My first time in Southfork was when you hosted a Bday camp in September same year, 2017. That was fun. That’s why I always remember you whenever I go that way. We were thinking same thing, it could have been a crazy sight to see the avalanche unfold.

I remember Jason (HuckOutdoors) was telling me the news about the avalanche while we were coming down from Mt Whitney last month. It looked like a giant meat cleaver slides down the mountain far away and gather its momentum then chopping every tree in its path.

@Idahoterry Beautiful scenery. The one time I hiked to the lake was in the late 1980s and it was bone dry. This year with all the snow, maybe it will have water into the next snow season. Glad to see the fire did not get all that area. I really enjoy your videos and descriptions of the trails as you go.

That’s true, last time I heard it still has water. I saw it bone dry as well and as frozen lake. It’s always beautiful there. Should be gorgeous back then especially before the fire. 👍

Great video, Robert. Looks like I just missed you that day. Wow you really had some great luck with all the wildlife. Very cool. I saw the avalanche debris field when I went up and Man, Mother Nature sure can cause some destruction if you are in her way. Take care

Thanks, Matt! We were supposed to do overnight Sat-Sun but didn’t happen so we just did a Sunday hike.. we could have seen you and probably Anthony as well. Yeah, I could imagine the roaring sound while the avalanche was going on. Might go back there for an overnight soon.

Soup looked like it hit the spot. Defenitly had a Sierra feel to it with the lake and the snowcapped mountains, beautiful area. That avalanche sure left behind a big mess. Cool to see the snow beneath the debris. Thanks for sharing

I remember Poopout hill from the mid 1970’s when we would day hike to San Gorgonio Peak. That was back when you could see nothing below 4,000 feet except a brown layer of smog. It was amazing to see blue sky whenever I went hiking. The sky was never clear in the city, except after a winter storm or during Santa Ana winds. We only got one day to see snow covered Baldy, but San Gorgonio was too far and too low because of the curvature of the earth.

I never got the chance to see Poop-out Hill before the Lake Fire in 2015. I heard it’s way better then. Now every time I walk by through that area, it look depressing. But the Old Greyback stands beautiful as always. Hopefully, fire this year will be to a minimum if not zero. It takes a lifetime to see the forest back to its glory days again.

@@20robertang We are all very lucky to live in the times that we do. Most old growth forests were chopped down to make charcoal, railroad ties, structures for mining and for buildings and homes. It's so ugly today when I see a clearcut forest, image how bad it must've looked a 100 years ago?

The cool part about the Lake fire damage is that the area around Dry Lake was spared so once you get to South Fork Meadows it really greens up again. Sad to see the avalanche took out so many live trees. I don't envy the trail maintenance crews job this year. Should be a lot of water sources in the wilderness this summer. Should be fun wherever people go this year.

That’s true, every time we hike from Southfork.. it’s too depressing at the start but gets better after the Poopout Hills. It’ll be lots of work to clear up the trail down the Southfork Meadows and even along the trail near Grinnell Mountain. We will be back there soon, now that water source is not much of a problem.. we can even camp during summer. 👍

Nice part of working with SGWA is access to certain roads. Not sure what the condition is, but usually when they do maintenance on South Fork beyond the Wilderness boundary, the crew can take the old road and park right next to Poopout hill. When you are carrying in the tools, it is nice to cut 2 miles off of the hike into where the work needs to be done. Too bad the other trails don't have a nice workaround available.
