I'm happy to hear that no one died. And that they're digging a tunnel to Seydisfjördur. That mountain pass is treacherous when it ices over. I was extremely happy to make it to the bottom, and relieved that the little art museum in town has a café that serves beer. I needed it!
@JustIcelandic
@JustIcelandic Жыл бұрын
Yes the mountain pass is a troublemaker and I closed in June 2-3 yrs ago due to snow and it's unacceptable due to Smyril Line, those tunnels will be the longest in Iceland, 14km I think, but the final location hasn't been decided, one option is to make to 2 tunnels and go trough the remote Mjóifjörður as well.

As a Swiss, I know avalanches well. We have them every year in the Alps and have built extensive protective works but also zones where we simply won't build houses at all because it's too dangerous. I will be spending my summer holidays in Iceland and was very surprised to learn that avalanches are an issue in Iceland too...

Those small communities are priceless for quality of life and for the future success of Iceland and the tourist industry. It's always unfortunate to have loss of life, and especially sad for a town with a small population...you just know they are multi-generational communities. Hope those barriers will at least minimize the damage, but sometimes that is not knowable until they are tested by the event. I'm sorry to hear that an avalanche hit there. Hopefully the injuries weren't too serious, that there's shelter for those affected, and that the town can recover quickly. I didn't realize how those steep mountain sides would foster avalanches. We have been having avalanches in the Sierras here in California, but I think the terrain is different, and most of the areas affected are back-country, ski resort type places, not communities. We have had mudslides, too, especially where the area has been affected by forest fires. This has been a year for that with all the rain we've received. Notably a lake which was completely drained almost 90 years ago is refilling (last time it was like this was in the 80's). I want to go down to see it to get a better idea of what the southern San Joaquin valley would've looked like when it was just the tribal nations living there. Evidently there was an abundance of fish and wildlife, tule deer especially. Thank you again for your informative videos! 💜🌎🏞️🌌🍀

Those avalanche barriers are much bigger and robust than I had imagined. (I was thinking strong, steel fences - I don't know why). From the video, it seems that the barriers did what they were meant to do...that the damage was limited to the places where the barriers are not yet constructed? The massive berm protection for Flateyri reminds me of the berms erected to slow the lava flow during the Geldingadalir volcano. But, woops, the planners of the Flateyri barrier did not take the harbor into account! Oh, the steel grids are more what I'm used to seeing from videos of the Bergen line in Norway - over the Finse mountain pass. There's no reason why technology can't figure out how to protect vulnerable areas. These isolated communities are, indeed, so very lovely. As the Earth fills up with ever more humans, being able to live that close to Nature is precious!

I hope those affected by this will recover soon, and that those barriers will be completed fast, but most important also sturdy and strong. I live in the Austrian Alps, where avalanches of all kinds are part of our life. The village of Galtür, where we lost 31 people in 1999, is only a few dozen kilometres from my home. They installed similar barriers to what you showed in your video after this catastrophe, in addition to the steel structures they had on their mountains at the time. The type that protects my village, in addition to protective forest (which they don’t have in Galtür - to high, wrong microclimate). It was a different avalanche than that one that hit your village. Freshly fallen powder snow, which can kind of „flow“ through and over those upper protective barriers, then compacts, and… well, the pictures from the insides of the houses and hotels in Galtür don’t look in any way different from what you showed.

This method has only been use in one ski resort and I thinks it's simply to hard to get to those places, so barriers is the only way to be as ready as possible..., or so I think

Wow, thats pretty bad. And just now, when spring is not far away. But living near mountains is always a risk. I can well remember 15 or 20 years ago, when half of a village in the Alp mountains was wiped out by a avalanche, with lots of people killed. Not sure if it was in Germany or Austria, but somewhere down there. The mountains there are a lot bigger and steeper than in Iceland, so the problems are bigger, too. The curious thing is, that snow fall got less and less over the years, which is a big problem for the tourist industry there. But sometimes it still snows a huge amount very quickly, and then it melt quickly afterwards. The perfect way to create avalanches. But its not only snow that is dangerous there, also rock falls can be very destructive. Those also increased lately, because the permafrost in the rock is thawing, which makes entire mountain sides instable. They are also trying to prevent the worst by building barriers, but its very expensive and not really pretty. And how effective a barrier is can only be said after something happened anyway.

First look: Oh, a slope. - Why aren't there 'Bannwald's planted? Second look: Oh, there ARE no forests. The only trees there grow protcted in gardens. O.O This is sad.

So sorry to hear this. I hope the snow will be cleared soon, but will there be a problem with too much water when the snow melts abruptly? One day all avalanche barriers wil be build, but there will still be landslides and volcanos. I admire the spirit of the people your country not to give in to the natural disadvantages of your indeed beautiful country.

Maybe need to build housing blocks in a V shape pointing up the slope. So when snow comes it cleves and going around a strengthened upper edge. Currently the buildings are contour and present a flat face to avalanche. Need to maje channels for snow to pass the structures. ?

When those communities came into being it was all about fishing, like still today actually, and there aren't any lowlands there, so this is what we are stuck with

Can say that about many areas around the world where they keep building in areas with the dangers of earthquakes/hurricanes/tornados/floodplains/forest fires, etc.

Glad to hear there was no loss of life. I know hinsight is a wonderful thing but, Why didnt they start fro the other end, From barrier 4 as that looked like it would be protecting more houses by going in the reverse. Risk assessment?

Wow! Those hills are steep! I'm glad to hear that your government and people decided to build the barriers, rather than abandon the villages. It is well that that "A" barrier worked as well as it did. It very well could have been much worse. Thank you for this report!

Yes I could have been worse, I'm hoping the change it soon because it was a pure design mistake how it controlled the snow into the harbour, 6 boats sank that day, but at least we know that this village will continue to be there :) and greetings from Iceland

DANG ! 😰 You guys have loads of helicopters - Dont you do controlled avalanche blasting…? Maybe you should do that and evacuate people before the blastings🤷🏼‍♂️and even more before the snowpacks get too Big and heavy?

@@schoolingdiana9086 No Way thats a small one🤷🏼‍♂️ They drop the charges into the snow on the mountain side, it drops like 1/2-1 meter into the snow… Its pretty safe. There Will be like 1000+ meters to the houses in this case, the charges Will not hurt the houses or any people.. Wildlife Will run or fly away from the helicopter noise and movements. Its the snow that is the real danger.. Im an Explosive expert, did Many jobs on power plants… Where i takes that you hold a 500g dynamite charge on a pole, 4-5m away from you… And signal to the Co-worker to hit the fire button💥 Blasting free dynamite are not so harmful… But in this kind of job.. You get the chockwave thru flesh, bones and skull… Imagine doing like 40-50 of these in 8 hours😅 Trouble is if its inside a Stone or iron… In this case there Will be like 2m snow bellow the charge, and Many meters to the sides…🤷🏼‍♂️ You Can find Many videos of avalanche blasting - On KZbin ! Some even use cannons and grenades 😁 But i prefer the helicopter and free charges.. Grenades contain metal…
