The cutting of their hair... this will not be discussed in the show but it is symbolic. It's based on a Japanese tradition. Here is the explanation from the Avatar Wiki: The top-knot is a sign of honor in the Fire Nation. After becoming fugitives of the Fire Nation, Zuko and Iroh cut off their top-knots and threw them into a creek to symbolize their rejection of their homeland and the beginning of their true exile.

Eric, Azula is a fire bending prodigy but that doesn't mean she's never worked hard for it, you have to remember that this opinion came from a jealous sibling. On this very episode we see that her free time is dedicated to perfecting her skills, and she takes "perfection" to a whole new level (created a huge lightning but 1 hair braid got out of place? Failure, start again until it's perfect!). Both her and Zuko have been training since a very young age, it's not like she has never worked, she's just naturally more adept on it. We wouldn't say that Mozart never really worked hard for his skills just because he was also naturally talented with them...
@skeeyee16438 жыл бұрын

@mordirit87278 жыл бұрын
... but I was referring only to what Zuko talked about to Aang on the last episode (how his sister beat him on training since an early age) and to what we see on this episode (Azula using free time to practice instead of leisure, and being very dedicated to perfecting the art), don't think it's really spoiling anything if all that has been said has been seen on the show already ._.

Adam J. Harper I know Doflamigo (If you're talking about One Piece) and I still think azula is a wayyy better villian and overall character simply because I think Dom is quite a cliche 2-dimensional character. To each their own though. I hated that arc, it was so flippin long.
@Sephajinami8 жыл бұрын
Adam J. Harper Not every character has to have a "big goal". Do all people have some big goal they're working towards? Azula constantly worked towards PERFECTION because that was her image of self-worth. This here is what makes her a better villain. How real she is. Countless people seek perfection because that's how they validate themselves as human beings. This dooms them to constant anxiety and unhappiness. In Azula's case, she didn't know how to gain love and affection, only admiration and fear. She was so unstable that she believed that she couldn't trust anyone because no one could possibly care for the true her. They wrote her like a true sociopath. Being naturally talented wasn't enough, being the model princess wasn't enough. Azula fought to maintain the image of a flawless being and when that image started to crack, so did she. Azula has several layers to her character (way too much to discuss here) that I feel too many people overlook.
8 жыл бұрын
I can totally agree with you, Adam. Azula is cool an all, but I always saw her as a spoiled chick with too much power on his hands. Like the guy from Death Note that kills people with his book and says "I'm justice".

I think top knots are an important part of Fire Nation culture, so cutting them off to go into hiding was very significant and heavy thing for them to do-- not necessarily out of disdain for their nation and countrymen, but out of the need to survive.

@houseofaction8 жыл бұрын
its more than just that. The cutting off of a person's top-knot was a significant event in traditional Japanese culture. Voluntary removal of one's top-knot, as performed by Zuko and Iroh, was considered a renouncement of title, social status, and pride. it was to show they were no longer prince's of the fire nation
@zeebird8 жыл бұрын
I love Azula so damn much! She's so manipulative and cunning and smart. She's also hard working and a perfectionist. Kinda surprised to hear that you all thought she had everything handed to her with no work. The whole training on the boat thing made it pretty clear that even one strand of hair out of place is NOT perfection and skill in her book. Trust me, you will see just how clever of a character she is over time. But you will also see another side of her, too. All of the characters on this show are extremely complex and Azula is definintly one of them, just you see.
@Bllll9578 жыл бұрын
Azula *sigh* I love her so much. The character is truly not made to be "liked" as a "fair" character. But she brings so much to the show, she's freaking brilliant. Just the way she manipulated Zuko LMAO he looked like a fool on this episode : "daddey wants me hoowwme" and Azula is like "yah dumb-dumb". Zuko totally deserves that mental slap to, kinda "ground" him, for everything he's done, and for what he's said to Iroh on this episode. The way Azula is and the way she's interacting with Zuko (already on this episode) are, I think, very important for Zuko's journey. Azula hasn't been created to be the bad guy to whom you can relate, that's Zuko (and kinda Iroh) so of course she seems kinda "unreachable" so powerful and smart and cold. BTW guys, at some point on book 2, there are "previously on Avatar" sequences to begin the episodes: you should skip them, because they're often spoilery for what will be in the episode.
@LidianeCordeiro8 жыл бұрын
Good Points. Point 1 - O love Azula, even if I don't fully get her. She's a psyco (family issues or not) and I just accept that. The way she reacts to both the world, friends, to victories and disapointments is the most interesting thing. Also, she unapologetically kicks all the asses possible. I love her! Point 2 - I used to like the "previously on" thing because it actually showed useful data, sometimes from several episodes prior, and often I'd have watched those like a year before or so, it kinda helped remember some details or people, so we wouldn't be like "what's with that couple with the baby... I think I've seen them before tho" or "oh my god, that is so deus ex machina". IN THIS CASE, with the boys, it's not necessary at all. It's all fresh (and will be especially because they discuss and take notes) and the ONLY thing the previous scenes will do is spoil the plot for that particular episode.
@CampingforCool418 жыл бұрын
Azula grows on you (as a villain anyway). I didn't like her at first either, she seemed like a standard evil villain. But after watching through I found her to be quite compelling as a villain once I thought about her character more. Give it time.

Fun fact, guys! Azula was in flashbacks in season 1! When Iroh was talking to his men about Zuko's backstory, when he said "I looked away" with the firelord vs zuko challenge, Azula was the one looking super excited in the front. They did hint to her since the beginning of the show, is what I'm trying to say. Unlike most shows, she actually WAS always there

I dunno if this is real history or just samurai movies, but cutting off the top knot represents a samurai who has been disgraced or lost their liege lord, and must now become a ronin, an honorless, masterless wanderer whose only options are begging, banditry, or becoming a mercenary. So it's basically both at once--they're dishonored, and abandoning their rank/going into exile.

I can't see Calvin this way, he's just so quiet just so he doesn't spoil the series for them. Love him for that.

Agreed. And season 3 was just perfect for her character growth.

Latrae Osborne the only thing this show doesn't do well is azusa back story. unless you read the comics you won't fully understand what makes her tick

Awww thanks guys!!!! Nice opening and closing to my work week. The cutting off of the top knots for the samurai class in ancient Japan could mean denouncing their past and embracing the new. Not sure about this though. Just read about it somewhere.

It's funny to see Calvin's biing his tongue to not respond to all the questions. Kudos for you Calvine! It's a good thing I can scream at the screen with all the answers and not spoil you guys because I would have a very hard time keeping quiet

azula's voice actor grey delisle is Frankie foster, vicky from Timmy Turner, and so much more. I met her in person and she was awesome ❤❤❤

You say that Azula doesn't have to train much because she is a prodigy. This is untrue. As you can see from this episode alone, Azula strives for perfection. Even if one hair is out of place in her form, she will consider it a failure and do it all over again until she perfects it. Unfortunately for Azula, this can also be considered a weakness. Also, love the shirt Erik.

Been going back to watch some of my favorite shows and reactions. Its CRAZY how many predictions you guys got right. Blood bending, suffocating, and metal bending. I guess they are kinda natural progressions but still you guys were on it. I watched this show live as a kid so i never saw all the cool things coming. Maybe its different as an adult

I love how they give Zuko and Iroh character depth over time. So many good episodes to come.
